Yes, they do, all the time, especially when said childhood friends are this big of an irredeemable scumbag.
But even if, for sake of argument, they don't, there's no STRUGGLE to forgive him for the horrible things he's done. It's just automatic. Like he's entitled to people not holding grudges against him, or being mad, even when he says and does horrible things. And that completely breaks the realism in the story where I'm sitting.
