It's interesting that you noted some of the culture shocks you felt reading this story, largely because I tried my best to keep the school more universal, rather than American/Japanese in nature. I suppose my bias/perspective as an American may have still bled through the pages though, but I'm super glad you took the time to note it.
It may not be your concentration necessarily. When I do a more formal edit of this story later on down the line, I think one of the things I REALLY want to touch up on is the narration. So it might be possible it might have been the root cause of some of the confusion you felt. Generally speaking though, you're on the right track regarding the questions you're answering.
