This story sets up some troubling hints at something dark that happened in its history, and I'm all for it. The implications of "valuable DNA" and "vanished nations" are quite tantalizing, and the detached, sort of wandering mindset of the protagonist seems like it'll be an interesting perspective to explore these ideas from. As Garbochii mentioned, I'm wondering if the narrator is indeed unreliable, but I suppose we'll have to find out as the narrative unfolds.
On a sidenote, a line that I quite liked for its imagery was, "Wooden floor with a pecan hue".
