ooo thank you ^-^- I've heard people compare it to the Shape of Voice and Odd Taxi before, but Beastars does make sense as a comparison too with how the monster-folk interact with their environment through Kiro's eyes, good point. Reina's introduction was quite fluffy and amusing, and I already like Lexi's archetype just from a glance, but I'm really hoping that there'll be at least one transmasc/masc-nonbinary character at some point.

Bonus elaboration/thoughts:
If I'm reading this correctly, I'm only just realizing that Abel seems to be cis-male as opposed to my previous understanding/reading of him as a nonbinary they/them. Meaning, that so far there appears to be 4 trans-femme figures in the story and a singular cis male. Considering that trans-masc people get left out of discussions of gender quite frequently, it'd be nice to see a main character like that represented in this very identity-heavy story <3

I particularly enjoy that the grounds of the school itself, much like the students within, don't conform to Abel's expectations/what they've experienced before. While the convo with Emma feels the slightest bit elongated, I really enjoyed the line, "sometimes a skirt is the most powerful weapon", as well as the metaphor with the odd-one-out flower (although I really hope Abel gets their comeuppance sometime soon for their wrecking-ball style navigation of the school- I mean, the AUDACITY to snip a girl's metaphorical flower without asking )😤

While Abel's adverse reaction to Ms. Lloyd makes me the slightest bit uncomfortable (notably calling them a crossdresser instead of using the identity terms she presented), I presume that they're going to grow into the environment of people being more accepting about other's identities (as the counselor even said, it won't make Abel popular to take such an attitude)

Absolutely love the scene-setting in this chapter. All of Abel's little lashing-outs and copes really help sell the troubled-teen's struggle. Learning about the history of their name and by proxy identity also gives me pause and a sense of empathy. Greatly curious to see how this place is actually run.

This is a rare instance in which a stream of consciousness narrator works particularly well for me- we get to interrogate the outside world and the narrator's thoughts in a fluid stream (pun intended) with just the right amount of emotional baggage that makes me think about things. Additionally, the rate of information delivery is tantalizing, and the line about "not rattling other's cages" was quite powerful. Looking forward to what comes next.

I must admit, it's definitely a bit convenient for Miieie, Rel, and the others to all share a room, but I'm not complaining. Big fan of the badass oneesan that Rel is shaping up to be. Love that they underestimated her speed because of her height in the fight too haha
