I think you did well in the later chapters with the language! And the details in general, as well. I think it's the smallest details that took me out a little, but really, that didn't dampen my enjoyment of the story and I'm sure most people won't even notice. All in all, it's a very sweet story.

That's some great input! Especially the "too focused on the ideas and goal" part. Sometimes I think learning about story structures and such (too much) hurt my storytelling abilities. Taking my time and "playing" in my story might serve me better now to find that balance ☺️ I'll let Love In Translation rest for now, but I'm drafting a new story already so I'll try and apply it there ☺️

Even if Silke's English is not the yellow from the egg wouldn't she at least understand some basic words? (Also, I'm really enjoying this story so far!)

Aaaaah, thank you so so so much for reading all the way through and writing down such a long, insightful comment! I'm really grateful for that!!
Yes, the "because story" aspect of my current writing is something that I'm now (quite painfully, haha) aware of, and was also something that was reflected in my JNC1 feedback. I have no idea when exactly on my writing journey I acquired that trait, but I don't think it serves me and I hope I can find my way (back?) to more character-focused storytelling.
Although, it's also the case that I try to do something new with each writing project - and for this, it was to figure out the "Save the Cat" plotting method to get a tightly plotted story that really fit the prompt. And I think I did that pretty well, haha. While with To The Green Lake, I did minimal (or rather, intuitive) plotting, just like in my older stories. I think I need to let go of rigid story structures and word counts and take my time with my stories, even if that's scary And then actually learn how to properly edit. It's honestly great to get feedback like this, as it helps me reflect more on my stories and writing projects. Thank you again!

Oooh, good point! Toma definitely had more of a character voice, I think. Now I just need to discover the secret recipe to get a whole crew of interesting characters together (though I think proper goals/agency is an important part of that).

Thank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts!
I think it's becoming more clear to me now that as a chronic underwriter, my characters suffer in the first draft (or rather, don't have any chance to be anything more than surface level because I don't give them enough page space to unfold).
I think Nela benefitted most in this "restructuring" already and I hope that Leo shines a little more towards the end, but it's certainly something for me to keep in mind. I don't think I have it in me to do big edits like that for the remainder of this contest, but it's something I want to look out for in future stories/edits. Again, thank you for your comment! ☺️
