It seems that Abel's ideals are showing small cracks if you ask me. When placed in an environment where he wants to be where he isn't forced to do anything, he becomes unable to do anything. Because he is unable to do anything, he becomes bored. The reason for his boredom is because he actually doesn't have anything interesting going on his life, so he makes up for it by creating conflict among others. Because of his desire for entertainment, he is left with no choice but to interact with the girls in the school. You can see that he decided to go with Emma exactly for this reason.
I can sense fron his interaction with her at the door scene that he actually craves for attention deep down inside, although he would never admit it. Why do I say this? Because he's bored of course, and bored people need something to do.
And guess what? Life sounds more fun when you get out of your comfort zone and try new things.
