A few pointers: you're changing between past and present tense, which might work in some (very few) contexts, but it doesn't here. Stick to either past OR present. Also, when it comes to dialogue, it should be one person talking per paragraph. You have multiple, which makes it hard to know what's going on, and it's even hard to read when this leads to walls of text like the one in the middle of the chapter.
