idk if it's because I'm hungry, it's 2 am, I love animals, or all three (most likely) but I'm having a lot of fun reading this story
the plot device best friend being an emotionally manipulative talking parrot instantly makes this a top 5 entry for me idc
the big criticism I have, though, is that it gets a bit hard to follow at times, because dialogue is always separated on its own paragraph with 0 tags to say who said who, which isn't TECHNICALLY incorrect (unlike many other entries), but it's still... ehhh. If it's a stylistic decision that's fine, I suppose, but I thought I'd get used to it and I haven't yet.
Also, so far, I don't really see any direction with the story. Things kind of just... happen, which is strange given how strongly the story opened to me. I don't mind more nebulous plots (all of my stuff has 0 plot if I gotta be honest) but generally speaking, by this point I'd at least sort of know what threads to follow. We'll see though. Hopefully there's some Marygold action next chapter (still the best name in the contest btw)
