    Author's Commentary #283

Time to talk about Chapter 283: Prussia's declaration.
I'll admit, the main purpose of this chapter was to properly introduce all the members of both Prussian teams. Quite a few have already been revealed, but only three have gotten their bios. I'll also do bios for Unnur and Vesna as I didn't get the chance to do it in the previous commentary.

フォルクナー・キーナー (Volkner Keiner) is how Volkner's name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is November 15th, which he shares with German grandmaster, Vincent Keymer.

His favorite piece is the knight.

ハンス・ウルリッヒ・ミュラー (Hans-Ulrich Müller) is how Hans-Ulrich's name is written in katakana. His character is loosely inspired by the Medic from Team Fortress 2.

His birthday is April 7th, which is the day Team Fortress Classic released.

His favorite piece is the bishop as he likes making use of both of them.

エーデルトラウト・ウルブリヒト (Edeltraud Ulbricht) is how Edeltraud's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is June 22nd, which she shares with Edelgard von Hresvelg from Fire Emblem Three Houses, which is fitting since she'd loosely based off her.

Her favorite piece is the queen, because that's how she views herself

イングリッド・フォン・ヘッセル (Ingrid von Hessel) is how Ingrid's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is January 4th, which she shares with Ingrid Brandi Galatea from Fire Emblem Three Houses, which is fitting since she shares her name with her and is loosely based off her.

マグダレナ・ヨック (Magdalena Yock) is how Magdalena's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is April 17th, which she shares with Hubert von Vestra from Fire Emblem Three Houses.

Her favorite piece is the bishop.

シビル・ウィズナー (Sibylle Wizner) is how Sibylle's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is December 9th, which she shares with Sibylla from Spy Kyoushitsu, who she is very loosely based off of. The birthday is also shared with Saloni Madhock, Indian International master Divya Deshmukh, and American grandmaster, Hikaru Nakamura, but that's more of a coincidental thing.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

ハンネロア・シュローダー (Hannelore Schroeder) is how Hannelore's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is March 31st which she shares with Koneru Humpy, an Indian grandmaster and one of the top female chess players of all time.

Her favorite piece is the rook.

ウンヌール・スロッドセン (Unnur Throddsen) is how Unnur's name is spelled in katakana. She likes to refer to herself in the third person.

Her birthday is May 5th, which she shares with Miku Nakano from The Quintessential Quintuplets, which is fitting since she's loosely based off her.

Her favorite piece is the queen because she views herself as a villainess queen.

ヴェスナ・モローズ (Vesna Moroz) is how Vesna's name is spelled in katakana. Весна Мороз (Vesna Moroz) is how her name would be spelled in Ukrainian. Her name translates to "Spring Frost".
(If I made any mistakes with the translation, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is June 5th, which she shares with Ukrainian grandmaster, Natalia Zhukova.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, as pawns represent an army of comonomers in her view.

And with that, all the Prussians have their bios along with Vesna and Unnur. With the focus on Prussia, I'm sure many will theorize that Prussia will likely be Japan's next opponent. The question is whether both teams will face Prussia. Though I think at least one of the teams will face them, though it would be a bit hillarious if none did as it would make Diderich's declaration all the more awkward. But regardless of if face Prussia next round, I will confirm that both teams will face Prussia at some point in the tournament.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #19:

Time to discuss Chapter 19: A woman of science.
First off, let's briefly touch on the now bald catgirl, Nyoan. One thing I've always wondered about catgirls is if they have two sets of ears. That's why I decided to answer that question and found out... They do indeed have both human and cat ears, or at least Nyoan does. Even though she was subjected to a full-head wax, her hair has a small chance of growing back naturally. However, since Okisato simply made her punishment "losing all her hair and fur", she could challenge someone to a DESPER battle and have her prize for winning be her hair and fur growing back. Of course, Nyoan is probably not smart enough to think of that herself.

Now let's move on to Okisato's 27-year old teacher, Mayana Maida. She's a woman of science and is highly intelligent. She draws heavy inspiration from Sae Chabashira from Classroom of the elite.

毎田 万夜奈 (Maida Mayana) is how her name is spelled in kanji. Her first name, 万夜奈, can translate to "ten thousand", "night", and "fruit tree". Her last name, 毎田, means "always" and "rice field".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is March 14th which is shared with Albert Einstein, one of the most famous scientists of all time. Believe it or not, Einstein did play chess from time to time so this can technically count as a chess related birthday as well.

Even though she's just now picking up chess, she's determined that the queen is by far one of the more useful pieces on the board, and thus that could be considered her favorite piece, which is a bit ironic considering she was trapped in one, but it could also be argued that the incident gave her an up close look at how useful the queen is.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #282:

Time to talk about Chapter 282: Chess' worldwide importance.
This one's a lore dump chapter, and there's a lot to talk about. And the big one is easily the state of the world thanks to the effect of the DESPERs. The fact that Germany's now the German Empire of Prussia, Russia's ruled by a tsar, and England's ruled by fairy chess fanatics probably cued many to the fact that while Earth in this universe does share some parallels with our modern day earth, there are many differences as well. However, one thing I felt I needed to address in the story was the state of Ukraine.

This is a touchy topic due to current events at the time of writing this, but since Ukraine has such a rich chess history, I felt it needed to be in the story. While I could have taken the safe route and simply decided to have the war not take place in this universe, I felt that wasn't the right way to go about it, thus I went with what I did.

The war still occurred, but it ended much faster due to the DESPERs. Ukraine does still exist though, but now has chess players as it's army in order to defend itself from Russia. As for why Grigori didn't force the Ukrainian president to cede all of Ukraine to him as part of the wager, it lies in the fact that Grigori sought to build his public image as a peacemaker, and he felt he could just slowly snip away at the land later anyway. Vesna's backstory will also be one of the darker ones in the series o fair warning on whenever it comes up again.

One other thing I'll mention before moving on to the next discussion topic is that there were many other nations I felt needed to be a part of the Chess Olympics due to either, their rich chess history and or good placement/won medals at the 45th Chess Olympiad. This is what initially drove me to make so many teams, and before I knew it, I had over 40. I doubt I'll be able to have both male and female teams for all the countries, in fact I'll confirm that the number of women's teams including Japan will not exceed 50. This is not to snub all those other teams, but rather it's just too big a task to write all those characters. Remember, each team consists of 5 members and even if you exclude the characters that have already been introduced, that's still a lot of characters to juggle. And that's just on the women's side. I've still got to write out some of the teams on the men's side. But I do think it's important to at least flesh out most of these characters as many of them will return for future arcs.

Now I'll talk more about the other nations mentioned in this chapter starting with the Neo Kingdom of Egypt. This nation came about mainly because I wanted to have an ancient Egypt-themed nation. And thanks to the DESPERs, some Egyptologists can now live their dream and rule Egypt as pharaohs. As such, this nation's characters will be more on the lighthearted side of things.

The Neo-Babylonian Empire and the New Kingdom of Simien will be much darker though. Like with Ukraine and Russia, the middle east at the time of writing this, is currently embroiled in conflict. Not wanting to mess with it, I instead decided to just revive Babylonia and have them conquer everything with robots. And in case any wonder why Babylonia has robots, blame Live A Live. To be honest, writing the key characters from these nations is easily one of the most difficult things I've attempted. These characters need to be written as close to perfect as possible otherwise the story suffers. Though this arc won't focus too much on these nations much, though characters from these countries will be introduced in this arc.

Finally, let's end things on a lighter note by talking about Mongolia. For them, I just wanted a Genghis Khan type character and after listening to way too much Mongolian folk metal, decided to go with it. There will be some interesting things to talk about in regards to Genghis Jad, but I'll save it for when he properly debuts in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:282

    Dec 07, 2024

    Author's Commentary #281:

Time to talk about Chapter 281: The conclusion of the Spain vs Denmark match.
There's a lot to talk about on this one. First off is the match itself. I originally planned for the game to be between Leyla and Sophia and end in a draw, but I didn't like how the game was turning out so I scrapped it and just had Sophia beat Leyla off-screen. Though Leyla losing, her game and Denmark winning the match was one of my original ideas.

It was either Leyla drew Sophia and the match ended in a 2-2 tie, or Leyla lost, but Denmark won the match. I went with the latter, mainly so I could highlight the importance of the team aspect. The loss is also all the more stinging for Sophia as she won her game yet her team lost. The Esperanza vs Jane match was also short which was a plus as I didn't want the round to drag on for too much longer. It also features a Saragossa opening which is Jane's go-to opening when playing as White. I've been meaning to feature a game with it and finally got the chance to do so.

And now, let's talk about the character that spooked Iori. Oh boy, this character is easily shaping up to be one of the most difficult characters to write. And funnily enough, this character led me to create ANOTHER character that will be just as difficult, if not more difficult to write. The latter character has not appeared in the story, but I will reveal that their name has been mentioned, and they will likely appear in this arc. I'll go more in depth on these characters once they're properly introduced in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:281

    Author's Commentary #260:

Time to talk about Chapter 260: Banter amongst the Danish team.
There's quite a bit to talk about as not only are there new characters, but also some references to the 45th Chess Olympiad. We'll start with the characters.

First off, let's discuss the old faces. Skaberghast is in fact Danish, and the reason for that comes from the fact that skaber means "creator" in Danish. While he was born and raised in Denmark, he currently resides in America, but he has dual citizenship for both Denmark and America.

As for Wakuta and Retskcirb, they're on the team since they're based of Lego characters. And since Lego is Danish, it makes sense for them to be on the team. Everyone else though is a different story.

Jern, Sommer, and Leyla are all based off of Fairy Tail characters, those being Gajeel Redfox, Natsu Dragneel, and Lucy Heartfilia, respectively. Julia also takes inspiration from Fairy Tail, being loosely based off of Levy McGarden from the series, though Alice Nakiri from Shokugeki no Soma was actually the bigger inspiration behind her character design. Speaking of which, let's do everyone's bios.

レイラ・リンガード (Leyla Lynggaard) is how Leyla's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is July 7th, which she shares with Natsu Dragneel from Fairy Tail.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, as she views them all as bald guys.

In case it wasn't obvious, Leyla is really into bald guys, especially bald twinks. Luckily for her, Sommer's her exact type, though keep an eye on the love triangle dynamic within the Danish team. While not everyone is in it, there will certainly be one.

ソマー・リゼロイド (Sommer Lyserød) is how Sommer's name is spelled in katakana. Sommer actually means "Summer" in Danish, while lyserød means "pink". This is fitting since Natsu is literally the Japanese word for Summer and Natsu has pink hair.

His birthday is July 1st, which he shares with Lucy Heartfilia from Fairy Tail.

His favorite piece is the knight, since it reminds him of a dragon.

True to his name, Sommer tends to wear everything in pink. Pink tank top, pink sneakers, pink scarf, only his shorts aren't pink, but beige. As for his hair, it was short, spiky, and crimson before Leyla shaved and waxed it all off.

イェルン・レヴ (Jern Ræv) is how Jern's name is spelled in katakana. His last name, Ræv, is Danish for "fox".

His birthday is August 9th, which is the day Levy McGarden's debut chapter in Fairy Tail was released.

His favorite piece is the rook, since it's the piece most like him.

Jern doesn't get along well with people which is often why he gets into fights. One big irony about him being based off of Gajeel is that his hair is pink, like Gajeel's rival, Natsu.

ジュリア・ラヴネトラ (Julia Ravnetræ) is how Julia's name is spelled in katakana. Her surname, Ravnetræ, means "raven tree" in Danish.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is January 23rd, which she shares with Alice Nakiri from Shokugeki no Soma.

Her favorite piece is the rook, mainly because it reminds her of Jern.

Much like Levy from Fairy Tail, she is self-conscious about her small breast size, though unlike Levy, will pad out her breasts.

Now onto the fun Easter egg. In the 45th Chess Olympiad, the first team the Japanese women's team faced was actually France. While I had planned for France to be one of the teams Japan would face in the story, learning that the real-life Japanese women's team faced it 1st in the Chess Olympiad was the main reason I decided to have France be first here. As for the men's team, their first team was actually Tanzania, not Denmark.

That's all for his commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:260

    Dec 06, 2024

    Author's Commentary #280:

Time to talk about Chapter 280: Surrounded by love.
The Japan vs Italy match has finally concluded. Once again, Japan fells another strong team with a perfect 4-0 victory and Daria hasn't even played yet. However, the more they win, the harder the opponents will be. This is why Daria's hoping the round 3 opponent will be an easier one as if she can sit that match out, she can play for the remaining rounds without having to worry about the 8-game limit imposed on maestros.

Speaking of games, the Mimoko vs Laura game has ended in a checkmate. As soon as I saw the checkmate, I knew the game had to be the Mimoko vs Laura game. The king is mated surrounded by pieces, which in Laura's mind equates to a harem checkmate.

With the match now over, both Japanese teams are done, but the round isn't over just yet. As previously mentioned, things will shift over to one of the other teams to see how things are doing. After that, the round will come to an end and it's back to the dining hall. This also means any more new characters will make their debut soon. Introducing this many new characters is no easy feat as many of them I want to have play roles in future arcs in the story. When I initially planned this arc out, it was actually meant to just be a regular tournament, but watching the 45th Chess Olympiad changed that and made me want to do something inspired by it. I never would have imagined I'd create so many new characters though. Needless to say, there will be many new characters to look forward to in this arc of the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
