    Author's Commentary #50:

Time to discuss Chapter 50: Ai Kamuro and Michiko Azami.
Of all the revised chapters, this one easily got the biggest overhaul as it now showcases Ai's backstory. This was a big gripe I had for ages, but now I'm finally able to put it to rest thanks to this chapter. Now let's move on to Ai herself.

Her name in kanji is 禿 愛 (Kamuro Ai) which literally translates to "bald love". Obviously fitting since Ai has a massive bald fetish. But there's more.

Her birthday is October 14th which is Be bald and free day. Yeah, Ai's whole character is bald, bald, BALD! Though I'll talk more about her later when more is revealed about her in the story. As such, I won't be revealing her rating just yet, but as you can surmise, it's gonna be big. All I'll say is she enjoys being bald, shaving women bald, and is attracted to women and strives to form a harem of bald women.

Her favorite piece is the queen, mainly because she views herself as the queen of all women.

Originally, Ai was meant to go bald here in order to showcase her personality, but I decided to instead have her stuck in role-play hell. The reason for that is because Michiko fears she'll become too horney and uncontrollable id she shaved her bald, but in order to ease her libido, will engage in role-play. As such, she's even got a drawer full of bald caps which she'll occasionally use on Ai. Speaking of which, let's talk about SPCM Himitsuchan.

執見 美智子 (Azami Michiko) is how her name is spelled in kanji. Her first name, 美智子, means "beauty", "wisdom", and "thinker", while her last name, 執見, means "take hold of" and "to meet".

    Her birthday is January 25th.

Like Ai, her favorite piece is the queen.

One thing I'll mention about Michiko is that she actually underwent a notable redesign, and now sports a more stylish hair-style that I feel fits her much better than the original. Speaking of redesigns, SPCM Himitsusama, aka Mizuse Niimi, also got a minor redesign in terms of hairstyle.

新美 美都砂 (Niimi Mizuse) is how Mizuse's name is written in kanji. 美都砂 means "beauty", "capital", and "sand" while 新美 means "modern" and "beauty".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is September 9th, which is international beauty day. She also shares this birthday with Yuzuha and Waki from Spice of life. Funnily enough, this means that September 9th is now the day that has the most number of birthdays for characters created by me, at least for now.

Her favorite piece is the queen, mainly because she believes it is the most beautiful piece on the board.

Mizuse hails from Okinawa and is known as Himitsusama. She's quite skilled at chess and is also the CEO of one of the world's largest women's beauty brands, Mizuse Niimi. She was originally set to appear much later in the story, but I decided to have her appear earlier and have a bigger role in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #144:

It's finally time to talk about the final chapter of Season 4, Chapter 144: Our beloved sadistic antihero.
And to start, the Desperado is none other than... Sandy. That's right, the one who claimed to be one of the nicer and friendlier ones was actually the Desperado. I actually had plans to reveal her true nature while everyone was still in America, but ended up changing things up, mainly because I kind of just wanted to get through the season. I did make it a bit more obvious it was her in the revisions though.

Looking back, I feel burnout definitely effected the quality of the season. I definitely had some lofty ideas for this season, but ended up getting burned out and deciding to rush things through. I also felt I didn't quite showcase Carol's character as well as I could have. At least, before the revisions that is.

I feel the revisions truly helped elevate this season to the vision I originally intended for it to be. Now I can look back on this season with satisfaction where as before I couldn't. Funnily enough, the revisions ended up extending the chapter count by two as now the Chess at the beach chapter is included in the season and I added the Iori vs Bette chapter.

One other thing I'll mention is Carol's rating. Thanks to her matches against Pewler and Lindsey, her rating has now jumped to 1069, meaning she clears the 700 rating threshold needed to become an SPCM.

While I do believe this season still had some shortcomings, there are some things I am proud of. Notably the games as well as Iori's and Pewler's speeches. I felt the speeches each defined their characters well. Iori also got some much needed spotlight after getting shafted in Season 3. Ironically, she's also going to have a very minor role in Season 5, though that's mainly because Season 5 will focus on Okisato and co competing in the Fairy league's game.

Speaking of which, Season 5 will not begin immediately as first, I will be releasing some special chapters where I discuss my favorite and least favorite games, characters, and chapters from the series. I hope you're looking forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #141:

Time to talk about Chapter 141: Fear of ostracization.
I actually struggled a bit on what to make the title, but finally settled on this. As for the chapter, it shines more light on why Sheila hates Mimoko and Daria so much. She had a rough time growing up due to her grandfather, Wiley, putting pressure on her to succeed him in legacy. Wiley originally wasn't like this and even allowed his son, Sheila's father, to pursue whatever dream he pleased. But after he and his wife were killed after getting caught up in a political protest turned violent, Wiley changed. That doesn't excuse his treatment of Sheila though.

As for both Sheila and Sherbert, they both ended up changing their personalities out of fear that society would ostracize them. In Sheila's case, she became a diehard Misericordia supporter, and while she did genuinely support some of their positions, most of her "support" was more so her trying to desperately differentiate herself from Wiley. Sherbert on the other hand was afraid of not just getting cancelled, but also being kidnapped and brainwashed like Lindsey was.

Since the focus of the chapter was more so on the discussions between the characters, I had the games be rather quick and not very tactical. Sherbert blunders and falls to Iori while Sheila runs out of time, but at least made one move. One thing I'll mention is that Sherbert's rating of 2650 is a reference to the fact that Hawaii is the 50th state in the union.

Going forward, Sherbert will decide to embrace more of her inner edginess, but she'll also become Iori's sworn enemy. As for the rest of the SPCMs, Iori just needs to beat Sandy and then she can challenge Wiley. Mimoko's in hot pursuit though so place your bets on who you think will challenge Wiley first.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #137:

Time to talk about Chapter 137: The key to victory.
Originally, I had this chapter occur after the climatic finale between Iori and Pewler, but decided to have the match occur first in the revision. The reason for that is that I wanted to show that Carol was able to survive, rather than making it a surprise following the Pewler vs Iori match.

As for the Glasstone stuff, Kon Iving is clearly a pun on the word, "conniving" while Duos Calceamenta is Latin for "two shoes" which is a pun on "goody two-shoes" and Tyran is a pun on "tyrant". This was actually going to be where the names were revealed for the first time, but I decided to have them be revealed much earlier on. Kon Iving is actually based off of Pewler which is why Pewler feels so connected to Glasstone and has such a big hubris because of it.

Another thing I'll mention is that DESPERs prevent anyone from dying before the match is concluded. Chess boxing is the exception, however, if Carol had requested a chess boxing match, her wounds would have been healed to the point where she would stand a fair chance against Lindsey and not hinder her in the match, however, any injuries she'd receive in the match could kill her.

Speaking of the match, it's actually the game that was originally used in Chapter 34 before I rewrote the game. I felt the game didn't fit the play-style of Okisato and Gyro, but Carol and Lindsey are a different story. Plus, it was a game that I won without any help against Chess.com's 1800-rated Wally bot, so I felt it was a worthy game to have be Carol's big moment. I also felt a little bad about removing the game from the story, so this chapter gave me the perfect chance to rectify that and put it back in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:137

    Author's Commentary #135:

Time to talk about Chapter 135: A drawn out battle.
As the name implies, this chapter features a draw. And a desperately needed draw. Pewler's honestly lucky he didn't implement Armageddon rules, otherwise he would have lost. However, all is still going according to plan, as despite him getting a bit flustered during the match, he has not lost his cool. One thing I'll mention is that Pewler's rating of 2948 is a reference to the fact that he's from Arizona which was the 48th state to join the union.

Things are dire for Carol though. Mimoko would have been in trouble too, but since she had Caïssa's blessing, the bullets didn't hurt her. As for why Pewler has a gun, it's his 2nd favorite go to weapon for taking people out. The only way to save Carol will be via a DESPER match, however, Pewler is on top of things which is why he had Lindsey use her DESPER for his match against Carol so he could use his own before Mimoko used the DESPER key.

One thing I will confirm is that it is impossible for someone to die during a DESPER match. Even if they are heavily injured, the DESPER will restore them to a state where they can at least play chess comfortably. However, if said person draws, or fails to make healing their injuries part of their prize for winning, they will die even if they don't lose.

Season 4 is quickly reaching it's climax. Next chapter will be the Mimoko vs Pewler match. While Mimoko is skilled, Pewler does have a higher rating due to being a WWCF executive board member. While the executive board itself didn't really play a large role in this season, I guarantee it will in future arcs of the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:135

    Dec 10, 2024

    Author's Commentary #132:

Time to talk about Chapter 132: A heartless woman.
If you didn't hate Imelda already, this chapter will most certainly make you hate her as it offers a glimpse at just how cruelly she treated Carol during her college days.

As for what happened to her sister, basically, her sister learned of what she had done to Carol and reprehended her for it. But Imelda aired her grievances to Pewler, which led to her sister being dragged into a DESPER match and turned into a sheepblossom as punishment for losing. As for what happened after, Imelda was walking with her sister, when she saw some guys walking by wearing anime shirts. Deeming anime degenerate thanks to Pewler's dogma, she ordered her sister to kill the two. Her sister came close to killing one, but the other killed her in order to save his friend's life. This enraged Imelda who promptly phoned in Pewler for help, resulting in the two being tried for murder and eventually subjected to DESPER matches against Pewler and turned into sheepblossom for losing. One of those guys was actually the sheepblossom that appeared back in Chapter 104, believe it or not. The other one was sadly killed and eaten by Imelda.

Speaking of which, this chapter takes the cake for having the most brutal death in the series. This is why I had all the characters display various reactions. Carol's reaction in particular was one I struggled a bit with though. While she is glad that Imelda is dead, actually seeing her suffer such a gruesome fate before her eyes is still saddening for her. However, she feels that Imelda brought this all upon herself, which saddens her because deep down, Carol is a good person, unlike Iori who relishes in others suffering. The chapter's title also has some double meaning. On one hand, it could refer to Imelda, who claims to be a beacon of compassion, but is anything but. But it could also refer to Iori.

As for the game, it ended up being a great way to write in a proper castling checkmate. Funnily enough, it occurred 12 games after the Iori and Carol collusion castling checkmate back in Chapter 112. Now Mimoko can see that Iori truly was capable of pulling off the move, and holds no resentment over the bet. However, things aren't over as while Mimoko and Carol were able to be sent back to Japan, Iori has stayed behind, presumably to face Horner and go after Pewler.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:132

    Dec 10, 2024

    Author's Commentary #121:

Time to talk about Chapter 121: Sorcha's angst.
I originally planned for this to simply be an intro chapter for Sir Grobhand, but decided to give a bit more character development to Sorcha. Then before I knew it, I was making a Life stream reference. Originally, I had Life Stream as existing within a separate universe, but decided that it would be part of the main one. Thus, Leona and Astrid exist here. Anyway, let's talk a bit more about Sir Grobhand and Muirchertach.

ミュルヒェルタッハ・グラス (Muirchertach Glas) is how Muirchertach's name is spelled in katakana. He's currently the taoiseach of Ireland and has always had a large influence in Irish politics for years. He's a greedy man and also a Desperado.

His birthday is July 14th. Like Sorcha, I wanted him to have a July birthday and the 14th of July worked well because 14 is 7 times 2.

His favorite piece is the king. Mainly because he thinks the king is the most powerful piece on and off the board.

グロブハンド卿 (Sir Grobhand) is how Sir Grobhand's name is written in Japanese. As per his name, his favorite move to play is the Grob opening. And if he's playing black, he'll always play the Borg defense unless he can play a Double Grob. I think we know who's going to face this idiot.

His birthday is April 3rd, which is the day Monty Python and the Holy Grail was released. This is fitting since he's largely inspired by the film.

His favorite piece is the knight, obviously since he himself is a knight.

The next battle could allow Mimoko and co to return home, however, Muirchertach is a crafty man, and him showing up with Sir Grobhand does feel a bit too convenient.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:121

    Dec 10, 2024

    Author's Commentary #104:

Time to talk about Chapter 104: Manipulator.
Originally, Pewler didn't appear until Chapter 110. However, I decided he needed to appear earlier in order to make him more of a threat. I also decided to have the fictional dystopian novel, Glasstone, make its debut here as well, since it does give a bit of context on what fuels Pewler's ambitions.

マヌエル・"マニー"・ピューラー (Manuel "Manny" Pewler) is how his name is spelled in katakana. His name, Manny Pewler, is a pun on the word, "manipuler" which is French for "manipulate". His design was based off of David Xanotos from Gargoyles, and funnily enough, I can imagine Pewler sounding just like him too.

His birthday is August 15th which he shares with French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte.

As for his favorite piece, the queen would be his favorite normal piece due to it being the most powerful piece on the board. However, the fairy chess piece known as the amazon is actually his true favorite piece, due to it having the power to checkmate all on it's own.

Pewler actually went through many character revisions before I settled on the final version of him. At first, he was initial going to be a manipulative, but more morally gray character. However, as I began to finalize the plot of Season 4, I felt he needed to be more evil and irredeemable.

Unlike with Michiko, Pewler's true thoughts and motives will be revealed to the readers within the story. As such, I feel he's one of the antagonists I really need to nail when it comes to the writing. Speaking of the writing, Season 4 is quickly shaping up to be one of my more ambitious writing projects. I feel I'm either going to nail it or botch it, maybe get something in between.

One quick thing I will touch on before discussing his secretary, Lindsey, is the fact that executive board members have the ability to mask their true ratings just like Raymond can. Unlike him though, they can't be looked up in the database, though since Pewler has defected to the Desperado league, all his match data along with his true rating are actually viewable. Now onto Lindsey.

リンゼイ・コブラー (Lindsey Cobbler) is how her name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is January 21st. I chose this date at random so there's no greater reasoning behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the queen, though mainly because Pewler told her that the queen is the best piece on the board when fairy chess pieces like the amazon aren't in play.

Like Pewler, she now debuts much earlier than in the original draft, which I believe is for the better. Speaking of which, I've made lots of changes in the revisions that I believe are for the better. Safumi interacting with Okisato instead of Zago is one, as while the interaction would likely be a thing in a video game adaptation, for the story, I don't really want Zago and Azenira to hog the spotlight too much. There are other notable changes as well, which I'll talk about more as they show up within the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
