I'll admit, Leona's parents were by far one of the weaker plot points of the story. I originally planned for there to be an entire arc focused around them, but decided not to go for it, due to both time, and the tonal shift it would bring to the story.
As for the merch, some of it is actually featured in the cover of the novel, though Regis is purple instead of green. I honestly wish some of it was real. That #wasabimoment figurine would look pretty cool, and it lights up too.
