Author's Commentary #12:

Time to discuss Chapter 12: Stealth challenge.
This is mainly a fun little chapter. First off, let's discuss what Okisato did. He initially came to school on time, but after noticing Yuusuke was absent, he decided to sneak out during the teacher's lecture and look for him. Since he sits towards the middle of the class and looks very generic, it was easy for him to sneak out. Not to mention his homeroom is on the ground floor, making it easy for him to sneak out the window. Too bad the security cameras caught him.

Next up, the insult Iori hurled at Yuusuke actually has some meaning. In Japanese, 小便 or shouben translates to "pee". Thus, Iori is essentially calling Yuusuke "piss". And since Yuusuke wet himself, the insult stings even more, not to mention it's only one letter off from his surname, Shousen.
(If I made any mistakes with the translation, feel free to correct me).

One final thing I'll mention is that Iori made a Metal gear reference. !!!

Author's Commentary #11:

Time to talk about Chapter 11: DESPER
That means, we're discussing the DESPERs. There are still many mysteries surrounding them, so I won't divulge too much about them. Rather, I'll clarify some things about them.
First, they can't be used against fellow Desperado league members or DESPER holders. A Desperado can however activate their DESPER in order to allow a lower-rated teammate to challenge someone.

DESPER holders can also force people into matches they aren't participating in so long as they have the highest rating amongst everyone. However, the one that activated the DESPER will not be dragged into any wagers if they themselves aren't playing. If they try to, the DESPER will simply tell them the request is invalid.

DESPERs can also force people with the exact same rating as the DESPER holder into a battle. Due to it being so structured around ratings, it is required to be a WWCF member and have a proper rating in order to wield one.

One final thing I'll mention is that the DESPERs are surprisingly very fair. They completely prevent cheating which is why the WWCF allows the use of them. Had Cypress activated his DESPER after knocking out Iori, it wouldn't have triggered due to Cypress having an overwhelming advantage. However, it isn't perfect as Cypress was clearly able to find a loophole by activating the DESPER before he knocked out Iori.

Author's Commentary #10:

Time to talk about Chapter 10: Knight race.
This was honestly one of my least favorite games to play out, though by no means my least favorite. From the get-go, I wanted this game to end in stalemate, meaning I had to make use of chess.com's move analysis in order to get things right. However, through the course of the game, Yuusuke made numerous blunders which is why I had Zanni intentionally make blunders in order to get a stalemate. As for why Zanni freaked out after moving his king to h3 on his 27th move, Yuusuke moving his rook to h6 would have been checkmate.

As for why the game ended in stalemate; insufficient mating material. It is actually impossible to checkmate with just a king and a knight (As well as with just a king and a bishop).

Considering how stressful, and how much I had to make the villain intentionally blunder to get the game right, I'm unlikely to plan anymore stalemate games, at least for now.

Author's Commentary #8:

This time, we're discussing Chapter 8: Blitzkrieg.
The first thing I want to address is the bit about the ratings. I actually added that part in because in real life, classic, rapid, and blitz are the three main ratings chess players can get. Each is at a different time control with classic being 90 minutes or more, rapid being anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes, and blitz being 10 minutes or less. There are faster forms of chess like bullet and Armageddon, but I don't think there are specific ratings for those two, at least not on chess.com as far as I'm aware.

This is also the first time I'm attempting to have two games take place simultaneously. While I think it worked well for these two games, it's unlikely you'll see this format in the future

Now onto Dr. Zanni. Obviously, he takes inspiration from Kira Yoshikage of Jojo's bizarre adventures. He stands at 213 cm, which is just under 7 ft. The mask he wears is known as a zanni mask, which is also where he gets his namesake from. This type of mask is worn by the zanni, a servant and trickster type character from Commedia dell'arte (Itallian comedy).
He did once have a medical license, but it was revoked as soon as he started murdering people. After joining up with Gyro, he opened a pub which he primarily used as a means to hunt for targets to force into underground chess matches. Though despite that, he's actually a decent bartender. As for why he enjoys collecting skeleton arms, that will be explained later.

His full name is actually Arlecchino Zanni with the katakana for his name being
ドクター・ザンニ (アルレッキーノ・ザンニ) (Dr. Zanni (Arlecchino Zanni). Funnily enough, Arlecchino is Italian for Harlequin.

He shares his birthday, January 30th, with Kira Yoshikage from Jojo's bizarre adventures.

Finally, his favorite piece is the pawn. The reason for that is that he believes they are the most unified of all the pieces due to their strength in numbers.

Author's Commentary #3:

It's time for dinner, or rather Chapter 3: Dinner for Makihara.
Once again, not too many differences between this and the original.
Now is probably a good time to mention that the series draws heavy inspiration from Shokugeki no Soma, though that probably was kind of obvious. Many of the characters are also based off a Shokugeki character. For example, Rika is based off of Rindo Kobayashi while Makihara is based off of Azami Nakiri. Masaru and Itsuki are also based off of Shokugeki characters (those being Eishi Tsukasa and Erina Nakiri, respectively), but take their names from other anime characters. Itsuki's name is a nod to Itsuki Nakano from Quintessential Quintuplets, while Masaru's is a nod to Masaru Hananakajima from Sexy Commando Gaiden.
Takeda is also loosely based off of Etsuya Eisen from Shokugeki, but draws more inspiration from Takeda Kanryu of Rurouni Kenshin and Purple ant from Spy Kyoushitsu.

Author's Commentary #2:

Time to discuss Chapter 2: The dastardly catering gig. In terms of differences between this and the original, there isn't much. This version just has some more fleshed out scenes and dialogue.

Before I decided to turn Spice of life into a series, this was originally going to be the final chapter. As for why I decided to have a thief kidnap and impersonate Rika, it's because I simply just wanted to see something like that in a cooking series.

Author's Commentary #5:

This time, we're discussing Chapter 5: Delusions of grandeur.
This chapter primarily serves as an introduction to the main villain of season 1, Gyro (Gunther Gunnerson). He primarily came to be because I thought a villain that had toy gyroscopes spinning atop them would be cool.

Originally, June 5th was his birthday, however, I changed it to March 11th, which is the birthday of Gunnar Gundersen, who was an Australian chess master as well as the one who played the game with the en passant checkmate that served as a reference point for the game in chapter 1. Gyro's name was undeniably inspired by Gundersen's which led me to change the birthday. Though that isn't the only thing that's changed about Gyro. His rating, which was initially 2459 was increased to 2559. The reason for that is because I wanted him to feel more like a threat as I felt his original rating was too low and too close to Okisato's rating of 2434.

Since his name isn't Japanese, there is no kanji for it. However, I believe ジャイロ (ギュンター・ガナーソン) (Gyro (Gunther Gunnerson)) is how it would be spelled in katakana.

As for his favorite piece on the board, it is none other than the bishop. Like Yuusuke, he believes it is one of the more versatile pieces on the board, though knights are a close second for him.

Finally, let's discuss the game featured in this chapter. Like chapter 3's game, it was conceived by playing a bot on chess.com. In short, the principal sucks, though to be fair, he made some decent moves, likely thanks to Gyro's teachings. Other than that, there really isn't much else to say about the game itself.
One thing I will clarify is that DESPERs don't need to be out in the open when they activate, which was why Gyro was able to activate his from his pocket.

Author's Commentary #4:

Time to discuss Chapter 4: Fool's mate.
First off the fool's mate. Yeah, Iori totally did that for the lols. Speaking of which, Iori is a streamer with over 4 million subscribers on her channel. She tends to be very edgy and raunchy in terms of what she streams. Despite her solid streaming career, her financial situation isn't the most stable and she lives alone. She's been friends with Mimoko since middle school though but only picked up chess after becoming a streamer. Her rating however is just 500 which signifies she's a rookie when it comes to chess.

As for Iori's name, the kanji is as follows, 石切所依央莉 (Ishikiridokoro Iori).
First off, her first name 依央莉, translates to "dependent", "center", and "jasmine". It can also mean "beauty" and Iori certainly is beautiful, but I actually chose it more due to it also meaning "to trust in".
As for her last name, 石切所, I wanted it to be noteworthy primarily in how it sounded, since Iori's whole shtick is standing out. It translates to "stone", "cut", and "place". It can also mean "to be enthusiastic" which Iori certainly is, as well as "worthless" which is what her detractors think she is.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

To my knowledge, she doesn't share a birthday with any notable chess players, though her birthday is notable since it's April 1st, which is April fool's day.

Finally, as stated in her character bio, her favorite piece is the knight. The reason for that is because she likes how chaotic the knight's movement is.

Valentines chocolates? Though I guess I'm more surprised chocolate itself is banned considering how large a presence it has in food outside of just candy. Though I guess this dystopian world would only allow people to eat food it deems healthy.
I'm also now far more convinced this story is going to end like Romeo and Juliet, or at the very least, similar to it.

Author's commentary #1:
So first things first, welcome to the author commentary. I might end up doing this for other series too so look out for that. Anyway, onto the commentary for Chapter 1: Rika and Masaru.
The chapter is largely similar to the original, but now delves into Rika's past immideately, where as in the original, her past wasn't properly touched on until chapter 19. Illumous has also been changed to I.L.U., though they're only different in name. As for other notes, I made sure to flesh out Matcha more here as well as Rika and Masaru's relationship. Speaking of which, Happy birthday to Rika and Masaru whom were born on April 12th 1997. Ryokoma also opened on their birthday so today is its birthday as well. On this day, both Rika and Masaru would be 27 years old while Ryokoma would be 8 years old.

Welcome to Ryokoma! In celebration of Rika and Masaru's birthdays, as well as Ryokoma's (4/12), I'm releasing a remake of the entire Spice of life series. Best part is that there will be daily uploads now for a good few months, and the story is better paced. I will also be providing author's commentary on each chapter, or try to at the least. Whether you've read the original or if this is your first exposure to the series, I hope you enjoy reading this series.

We have finally reached the true final chapter of Spice of life's original version. Thank you so much to everyone that checked this out. Feel free to check out the remake if you want, but if not, that's fine. This chapter is pretty much how the remake will end as well.
Now for some discussion on the chapter. First off, Happy birthday to Rika, Masaru, and Ryokoma.
As for Rika and Masaru's children, all of them with the exception of Waki and Yumi are named after spices. As for why one is named Waki, Rika just did it out of appreciation of her friend. As for Yumi, her birthday is the exact day I uploaded the first chapter of Spice of life here on Honeyfeed.
Now to discuss the remake properly. Originally, I rewrote Spice of life and submitted it to a contest, but since it didn't pass, I decided to upload it starting today. A part of me really did want to upload the remake so I guess things worked out. Story events will be far better paced, and characters that appeared towards the end of the story, like Nero/ Muramasa Jouzu, make their debuts in the remake much earlier. Funnily enough, Nero's debut chapter here was actually the last original chapter I wrote before initially doing the rewrite for the contest. Every chapter afterwards ended up being adapted from the rewrite into this version of the story.
Now even though I've been constantly gushing about the remake, the original Spice of life will always hold a special place in my heart. As such, I will be keeping this version of the story up while I publish chapters for the remake. As for the future of the series post remake, maybe I'll do a story focusing on Rika and Masaru's kids or have the characters cameo in another work. Though I guess they've already cameoed in Escape Witch (which is also getting a remake) and the characters from Escape Witch have cameoed here. But for now, everyone lived happily ever after.

Yeah, so this chapter is incredibly weak. The reason for that is that I originally planned for there to be a whole arc where Benihime learns about Rika's past. By the time I finally wrote said arc, this version of Spice of life was already over 100 chapters. Since I didn't feel like adding the arc in, I decided to make it remake exclusive, so look forward to reading it. The arc also covers the Tabeono headmaster selection, the one plot point that was unresolved in this story. For this version, we'll just say Muramasa Jouzu took over.
