    Author's Commentary #458:

Time to talk about Chapter 458: The 6B roster.
Originally three different chapters each focusing on all the teams participating, I felt it was best to just merge everything together both to save time and move the story along quickly. It is worth noting that thanks to Ayane, Mayane has now been roped into participating. Really, Iceland is probably the only team that won't get much spotlight, unless of course some teams decide to drop out of the event. Now let's do the bios for the stylists.

セドサスワーヴ (Sedosa Suave) is how Sedosa'a name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is May 9th, which is the day Suave Brands' North American rights were acquired by Yellow Wood Partners LLC.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

サリー・ブレイド (Sally Blade) is how Sally's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is January 5th, which she shares with American businessman, King C. Gillette.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

ライッサ・レイザー (Raissa Razor) is how Raissa's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is October 25th, which is the day Société Bic S.A. was founded.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

リリ・ルシャス (Lili Luscious) is how Lili's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is January 29th. The reason for this is because Greek physician, surgeon, and philosopher, Galen was born in the year 129.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

One of the main reasons I held off on doing these bios was actually because with the exception of Sedosa, I wasn't sure if I was going to change the initial names I gave them. I ended up keeping them, and after finishing their designs, decided to finally do their bios. One tidbit I'll mention about Sedosa is that she used to be included as part of the Misc. Female Players art, but has now been replaced there in order to appear in the art of the stylists. That being said, she is still competing in the main tournament.

As for the stylists in general, I'm not sure what plans I have for them beyond this arc. That being said, I do want to eventually flesh them out, which will likely happen as some of them are SPCMs or DSPCMs. Even for the ones that aren't, I do plan to flesh them out. One other thing I can talk about is that the reason there are so many women's teams is for a few reasons.

First off, there was Japan and any country that finished in the top 10 and/or had one of their members win a medal in the IRL 45th Chess Olympiad this arc is inspired from had to be added, meaning at least 23 teams, regardless of if I was already planning on adding them, were added. Next were any nations not part of the aforementioned group that had major characters hailing from them such as France and England to name a few. And finally, teams I hadn't planned for, but was inspired to add for one reason or another whether it be because I just felt like it or was inspired by some music.

And that eventually lead to over 500 characters being created, and I'm still adding more, not to mention I still need to finish up art for some of the men's teams that have already appeared. One certainty is that you can expect new characters I created literally days ago to pop up frequently in this story.

Speaking of teams, I've ended up playing around in paint and making a few more new women's teams. That being said, while I have ideas for them, I doubt they'll have much of a role in this arc. Though I will state here that one of the teams is the Greater Federal Republic of Central America, which is based off historical nations of similar names. Costa Rica isn't a part of it, and thanks to DESPER shenanigans, it's now located in the gulf of Thailand, bordering Cambodia. Since I retconned this into Chapter 282: Chess' worldwide importance, I felt I'd mention that here since it's literally almost 200 chapters back. But while this team and the other new ones won't have much of a role in this arc, they will pop up again later in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #454:

Time to talk about Chapter 454: Smooth as a dolphin.
Author's poorly disguised fetish strikes once more. Unlike last time, I'll make the commentary a bit more productive by focusing on some fun facts, namely the Bosnian Convertible Mark.

Many probably didn't know that's Bosnia's official currency, or that it's abbreviated as KM. In regards to the pricing, that was done to the current exchange rate at the time of me writing the chapter, which was about maybe a few days before the chapter was uploaded.

And speaking of the "Roboticle" debacle, it's based on a true story. One day for my birthday I got a Bionicle set I didn't want, and returned it to buy something else with the money. Later on, I came to regret that decision mainly due to how pricey the set is now.

One other thing I'll mention is that Marianne of the Swiss women's team has been redesigned to now sport basketball attire. This is mainly due to her character being built around basketball as the series progressed, which wasn't originally the case when she was originally designed. Babylonia also got another redesign, but I'll go more in depth about that when Babylonia makes it's proper debut in the story, which will be soon.

Speaking of the story, I'll give some warning that the next chapter is a bit darker, and while it does have some minor foreshadowing, I'll probably recap it anyway later, so feel free to skip over it if it's too dark for you. The chapter after that is normal, so no need to worry about have to skip too far in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #453:

Time to talk about Chapter 453: Eligibility checklist.
With my revisions complete, this means I also got to go through and update my Author Commentaries and Game logs. This chapter marks the beginning of those edits. You'll also see some of the old Author Commentaries and Game logs are still present. For now, the old Author Commentaries will stay up, so pardon the inconsistencies with them.

Originally, these chapters were two different ones with one simply being titled, Smoothie Q. Mifsud. Merging these chapters felt natural which is why I did it. I also decided to merge it with the original Chapter 453: The music of the tournament, since it was so short and made sense to include here. The chapter's whole purpose was to officially in-story state the themes I've selected for each of the teams and characters. There really isn't more to it than that. I still decided to have some fun with Kisha though. One thing I will note is that this chapter likely will be edited to include more countries and songs in the future.

As for Mifsud, when I first thought up this character, all I knew was that she was gonna end up bald. That happened, but now she's managed to smooth her way into becoming a potentially major character going forward.

The key to all this is ironically her bit with Melisha back at the end of Chapter 432: Batsu for the lost bet. In fact, the shave in this chapter was actually meant to be shown in the story back then, but I decided to hold off on it. But getting back to the conversation, knowing that Mifsud's actually a really bad person sheds a whole new light on this and what will be happening in the next few chapters. As such, there will be some hints within all that she says and does so play close attention if you want to be able to try and predict key future plot points.

As for the eligibility checklist itself, it might seem like it was simple by nature, but it was anything but simple to make. With so many teams, it took quite a bit of time to finally narrow down all the scores for the top 65 teams. That aside, the rules of the tournament were relatively easier to craft. There is a story behind them though.

Originally, I was only going to have the tournament consist of 32 teams, but when I ended up making so many women's teams, I ended up doubling the number of eligible participants to 64. This way, I can still get a final 8 bracket with ease, and it makes the tournament more cutthroat as now only the top team in each division will advance. While it's still a few chapters away from starting, I can confirm that based off the games I've already got written down, that this will be one of the most intense arcs in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #496:

Time to talk about Chapter 496: Unable to touch grass.
You can tell I had fun with this chapter too. Ilmi is easily my favorite of the Fins on the women's side, and luckily, she's not evil. She's just an ordinary girl who was trapped in electromagnetic Finland until now. Speaking of which, let's do the bios for her and the other women as well. But first, a big PSA for the series.

Season 7 is complete, and as such, I'm in the process of revising and reordering the chapters. As a result, this chapter, Unable to touch grass, will be swapped back to Chapter 477. If you've been following the series daily, go back to chapter 477: Unable to touch grass and read from there as that's the point all new content will be uploaded for chapters 478-496. Tomorrow, chapter 497 will be a continuation of the new canon, so if you don't want to be lost, head back to chapter 477 and read from there. Now for the bios.

ヴィルピ・ラトバラ (Virpi Latvala) is how Virpi's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is February 9th, which she shares with Finnish honorary grandmaster, Eero Böök.

Her favorite piece is the rook.

ヌーラ・ガレン・カッレラ (Noora Gallen-Kallela) is how Noora's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is February 27th, which she shares with Finnish grandmaster, Heikki Westerinen.

Her favorite piece is the king.

Some of you might recall that Noora's design was originally used for the then Dr. Yanmin Van Aitzema of the Babylonian women's team. Just like I said, her design was not trashed and now belongs to Noora.

ピルッコ・エスコ (Pirkko Esko) is how Pirkko's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is April 3rd, which she shares with Finnish grandmaster, Tomi Nybäck.

Her favorite piece is the pawn.

Pirkko's design has also been in reserve for a while, but I can't remember if I poster her design in any team artworks prior to this.

イルミ・ホロ (Ilmi Hollo) is how Ilmi's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is October 24th, which she shares with Finnish grandmaster, Jouni Yrjölä.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

One final thing I'll confirm about Ilmi is that she will become a DSPCM. However, since she wasn't a DSPCM now when she was beaten, Iori will have to rematch her to get the accolades from beating her. This will also be officially stated within the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:495

    Jul 09, 2025

    Author's Commentary #495:

Time to talk about Chapter 495: Lamp oil, rope, poisoned pawns.
Finnish bootleg Morshu is here, folks. Now is the time to dig up that Morshu text-to-speech app and use it or at the very least, imagine Morshu's voice or one just like it, coming from his mouth. Speaking of which, I think one of the reasons Morshu can say so many things using just his line from the game is because he says every syllable or something in the two lines he has, making it possible to make him say anything just by copy/pasting those lines. But enough talk of trivia here, let's do proper bios for the Finnish boys.

ユハペッカ・ヨエンスー (Juha-Pekka Joensuu) is how Juha-Pekka's name would be written in katakana.

His birthday is May 1st, which he shares with JP from Street Fighter 6.

His favorite piece is the bishop.

To be honest, his name is the only standout feature about him other than the fact that he's emo.

オイバ・フースコネン (Oiva Huuskonen) is how Oiva's name would be written in katakana.

His birthday is May 21st. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the queen.

Oica's the femboy of the bunch, and like Juha-Pekka, doesn't have much development.

ルーペ・モロッタヤ (Roope Morottaja) is how Roope's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is October 10th, which is the day Link: The Faces of Evil was first released.

His favorite piece is the pawn.

In case it wasn't obvious, this guy's a full blown rference o Morshu from the Legend of Zelda. Even references Mortar, the parody character of Morshu from Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore. This all came about because his name literally translates to "rope", and as we all know, Morshu sells lamp oil, rope, and bombs as long as you have enough rupees.

As for the game, it was short, but I wanted to make sure it had a poisoned pawn variation so that I could make the chapter title work. Since the Latvian Gambit had one such variant, I went with that. Now I really am starting to get curious how frequently this gambit has been played. I want to say around 5 or 6, but it could be a little more.

And now, the men have gotten their first perfect sweep of the tournament. All that remains is for the women to do so, and then we get closer to the final act of this arc in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
