    Author's Commentary #346:

Time to talk about Chapter 346: Alien love.
It's the finale of the Estonia vs Serbia match, and this time I'm giving the spotlight to Külli. Prior to writing this match, Külli was essentially a glorified background character, but now, she's got more backstory. It's honestly a bit ironic, considering the fact that in the design phases, I had lots of trouble nailing down her final design, but now I have big plans for not just her, but the Estonian team as a whole.

If you paid attention, you would have spotted that Valve is now president of Estonia. I actually was considering making it Külli, but felt Valve filled the role better. As mentioned in a previous commentary, the Estonian folk song, Kui mina ükskord noores eas, võtsin vana naise, played a heavy role in inspiring this arc, evidence more by the fact that Külli sings a verse to it's tune. A remix of the song would most certainly be Estonia's theme in an anime and/or video game adaptation.

As for Külli, whether she really is half-alien or not remains to be seen, but one thing we most certainly know is that she can play the Alien gambit. I've been wanting to have another game featuring it for a while now, but never got the chance until now. And for a fun fact, the game here was actually written before the one between Nikolina and Maila.

Now that Estonia has won the match, they're in the running to be Japan's next opponent in round 7. While at this point, I'm still debating who the team will face, I do know it will be a team full of characters that have already appeared in the series and may or may not have encountered at least one member of the main cast before. Though before any of that, there's still some games left in the round, including another team match full of some familiar faces. Get hyped, because the first of many top 30 favorite games in the series contenders will be showcased next chapter.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #345:

Time to talk about Chapter 345: Serbia's ruddy rose.
It's time to showcase Nikolina's chess prowess, and she certainly doesn't disappoint. She's so good, she's giving opponents bishop odds in tournaments, and winning. Maila was no slouch either, being rated 2410, but Nikolina is unstoppable when she's angry. Nikolina is quickly shaping up to be one of the more difficult characters to write, mainly due to her backstory. I'm still trying to figure out all her traits, but I do imagine she'll be regarded as one of the more controversial characters in the series, assuming I decide to give her the storyline I primarily have in mind for her.

One thing I will confirm is that the Serbian folk song, "Oj Ružice rumena", was the big inspiration for shaping Nikolina and to some extent the Serbian team as a whole. If this series ever gets an anime and/or video game adaptation, you can bet a remix of said song would likely be Serbia's theme. In an adaptation, music is one of the things I think needs to be perfect as it's my believe that engaging music truly enhances the medium and makes things more memorable.

Speaking of things in the series I want to be perfect, the game itself was really fun to write. I guess we can call the opening the Serbian gambit for now, but it really did put Nikolina at a huge disadvantage. But then she sacrificed the roooooooook, and suddenly things were even as Maila took the bait and captured it. That moment is easily the most fascinating to me. Most humans would certainly capture that rook as would some bots too, yet doing so shockingly evens the game, and gives White a slight edge. Then Maila blundered and Nikolina was merciless. I've got my work cut out for me for my next favorite games in the series list with all these amazing games being featured in the story. In fact, I might still have trouble narrowing things down, even if I extend it to a top 30 favorite games in the series list.

One interesting fact about the game is that it was actually one of the last games for the round to be written. Originally, I was going to have the story jump over to another team for a few chapters before coming back to these two teams, but ultimately decided it was best not to break anything up, and thus shuffled things around to make them flow better. Now the Estonia vs Serbia match will conclude first before the story shifts over to the other team match of the round.

Though getting back to the story, it's all down to one final match, with whoever winning having a fair chance of being Japan's next opponent in round 7. Of course, that isn't a guarantee that whichever team wins this will in fact be Japan's opponent. Many teams in the women's section currently have perfect scores of 12 points, but that just means all those teams will be paired against each other, further reducing the amount of teams with perfect scores. And naturally, the next game will not be the final game of the round either, so there's still plenty of action left in round 6 of the tournament.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #344:

Time to talk about Chapter 344: Baltic Balkan brawl.
It's Estonia vs Serbia in this epic clash, meaning Õnne-chan is back. It's been a while since we last saw her, but before I start talking too much about her, let's do the bios for all the new characters.

ゴラナ・ペトロヴィッチ (Gorana Petrović) is how Gorana's name would be spelled in katakana. Горана Петровић (Gorana Petrović) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).

Her birthday is May 26th, which she shares with Serbian international master, Teodora Injac.

Her favorite piece is the rook, since it's built like a mountain.

Gorana is currently the highest rated player on the Serbian women's team. She enjoys the outdoors and hiking in the mountains.

スラジャナ・マジャール (Slađana Madžar) is how Slađana's name would be spelled in katakana. Слађана Маџар (Slađana Madžar) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).

Her birthday is March 18th, which she shares with Serbian women's grandmaster, Svetlana Prudnikova.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, because she likes round things.

Slađana's main selling point is her design. That's pretty much it. Though I do have an idea what to do with her character.

ニコリーナ・コジッチ (Nikolina Kozić) is how Nikolina's name would be spelled in katakana. Николина Козић (Nikolina Kozić) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).

Her birthday is February 15th, which is Statehood day in Serbia.

Her favorite piece is the queen, since she sees herself as Serbia's warrior queen.

Originally, Nikolina started out as nothing more than a character based off of Nino Nakano from the Quintessential Quintuplets. She didn't really have any defining traits, until I decided to add the Bosnians to the story, which in turn, led to me further fleshing out all the Balkan nations. As a result, Nikolina is now one of the darker characters in the series. This largely stems from the fact that she was orphaned as an infant during the Yugoslav wars, which led to her gaining an unbridled hatred for Albanians, as it was Albanian forces that killed her family and nearly her as well.

ヨバナ・ヤニッチ (Jovana Janić) is how Jovana's name would be spelled in katakana. Јована Јанић (Jovana Janić) is how it would be spelled in Serbian (Cyrillic).
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is December 6th, which she shares with American poker player and Chess master, Fan Harrington.

Her favorite piece is the king, since she believes it's the most valued piece.

Jovana is a poker player who also decided to dabble i chess. There are actually quite a few professional chess players that play poker as well, so it made sense to include such a character here. And since Jovana was a blank slate, it made sense to give her that backstory and personality.

Now getting back to the main topic, since it had been a while since Õnne had last shown up, I felt it was time to check back in with her. I also wanted to showcase her in a game taking place in the main tournament, which is why I went with this.

And speaking of the game, it features a Villemson gambit, which can be considered a delayed Bongcloud if the main line is followed. As shown in the game, it has some tricks and traps, which combined with Õnne's prowess, made taking down Slađana look easy.

Of course, the match is far from over, as now it's time to see how some of the other players play. One final thing I'll mention is that originally I was just going to feature a game with Õnne, but decided to do a full match. Lostening to the Estonian folk song, Kui mina ükskord noores eas, võtsin vana naise is the main reason why, as it not only gave me the inspiration on what to do with the Estonian team, but I even went and gave Estonia a men's team when I originally had no such plans. Just goes to show how much music can influence me when I'm writing this series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
