Author's Commentary #499:

Time to talk about Chapter 499: Reset sweep.
It's finally over. The Chess Olympics has finally concluded. Of course, there's still a few more chapters before Season 7 itself ends, but it is a milestone nonetheless. Before I talk about the obvious milestone the series will reach next chapter, let's talk about this chapter. First up, the game.

I said I'd eventually show how the Xiao Lin vs Daria game from round 6 would have gone if Xiao Lin never resigned, but at the time, I just thought I'd showcase it via flashback alongside this game. Burnout goaded me into just having the game be played again, but fully here, yet I feel it was a good decision. This allowed me to focus more on the game's ending, which is the big draw, the reset mate. This checkmate is the most humiliating one in the book, and if this series ever gets a video game adaptation, you can bet every opponent would have a special reaction if they get reset mated.

This naturally was planned from the start to be Kuon's ultimate fate. And speaking of Kuon, she also embodies the sin of vainglory. Before settling on having Ginji sabotaging the team at every turn, Kuon was slated to be the main villain of the season. However, I feel that title better fits Ginji considering what he did. I just thought I'd highlight the fact here.

And now, Japan has completed the perfect sweep to win gold. Now they just need to get their medals and then they can head home. But first, the 500th chapter is next. This will be an OVA-like chapter, but it will be canon to Season 7. You'll see what I mean next chapter in the story.
