Oh, it's definitely not written as something to be enjoyed. It meant to unnerve you and give off that 'dammit, wut' feel.
And I'm not sure why you both think that there's really a twist to this. The fact that Mommy did something fishy is telegraphed from the very beginning, especially with all of the unsettling feelings that she gives off throughout. And she just gets more obsessive and detached from reality as time goes on.
