Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed this story enough to spout out an essay. I do think this piece is a bit complex. It's meant to be divisive, delving into the moral ambiguities of law and people's own justifications. It was certainly a piece that I wrote as an experiment for heavier themes, focusing more on the execution of emotion and character, with the plot being more or less easy to tease out from the clues.
You picked up that I was intentionally sprinkling those doubts, mainly to give readers that sinking feeling of dread. So I'm happy that you interpreted it the way you did.
I will have to warn you that my other stories will probably fall short compared to this (most recent short story), as I tend to write more silly things than not. This piece in particular pained me to write. But when I get inspiration, I just somehow kinda carry it through.
