I thought if I didn't give him or at least one other side character from that arc another little scene, it would feel slightly incomplete.

Showing that he is not just the self-centered eccentric I initially introduced him as was supposed to make him feel a bit more layered before moving on.

I think the exact nature of Elda's condition is difficult to grasp. He must have some form of “feeling sense,” otherwise he wouldn’t be able to handle his knives the way he does or have that level of control over his body.

It’s probably more like a numbness, like when your leg falls asleep. You can still tell that sth is there but it feels like it’s wrapped in cotton.

Your idea captures it really well I think, bcs he likely wouldn’t be able to perceive the sensation of his lungs taking a truly deep breath, so smoke would naturally help with that :3
