You could do both.

Worldbuilding through dialogue is of course better, but it’s in the nature of the medium that as a reader you don’t always catch everything (especially when there are an extremely large number of things that require explanation, which is definitely the case in an alternative world).

That’s why I personally like it when a few pages simply summarize certain things.

George R. R. Martin did this as well in the form of family trees, etc., which I always found extremely helpful.

And you actually did the same in Pliniad in a very good way with your Historia Naturalis !

At first I wanted to say that you clearly enjoy writing tragedy...

But you actually never present that stuff as something bad.

You always have that 'the world’s sorrows are simply part of its nature' vibe, which feels surprisingly soothing even though it’s also kinda sad, I like that.

What I had in mind, was actually a flintlock pistol of french type, they were already available at that time, although still pretty new.

It would not be an everyday purchase for a poor or average trader but I tried to implicate that the mc is somewhat wealthy bcs of his father, so I thought it's still okay for him to own it.
