Crap.
That's exactly what I was afraid of, that this might feel to unrealistic for the reader
The idea was that firearms make men militarily relevant for the first time, and if they can suddenly become effectively soldiers, it changes who can fight, who is needed, and eventually who holds influence...
Whether society embraces or resists that change is one of the central conflicts of the story...
If you ask who would even oppose to that, the list would be longer than one might think:
- institutions built around training magical women
-noble families whose daughters dominate the officer corps
-economic systems built around magic...
And on top of that: cultural beliefs that define military service as feminine
You might ask then: "Why would anyone even think about men becoming soldiers? Why wouldn't they simply arm the women?"
1st: Bcs there aren't enough women.
2nd: Bcs guns allow non-magical people (men or older women) to contribute as well...
Also is it much more logical
