Okay. Since the prologue was pretty short, I decided to read Chapter 1 too and combine my thoughts on both. I thought it was a pretty standard start, nothing too special, but quite lacking in grabbing my interest. The prologue starts off prologue-like enough. It raises a few questions concerning the boy, gives a few allures to his circumstances, and whatever he himself can see beyond that apparent darkness that I assume, ordinary people can’t. It’s interesting, sure, but nothing that particularly stands out to me that hooks my attention. It’s short anyway, so I guess it doesn’t really matter too much. Chapter 1, for the most part, was just an action runaway scene. Though—I will say—I was a bit put out of it when Rei asked for 10 seconds and whoever was pursuing her thought it was good to conveniently give her 10 seconds and then be surprised when she escapes after. Idk, just felt like a really odd choice that broke my immersion a little bit. I actually found Chapter 1 pretty uninteresting when compared to the prologue. I didn’t care much for the action scenes, all the much. Rei’s introduction was also kinda lacking. We get to learn she’s some bounty hunter, but that’s it, we don’t get to see anything else like a clearer glimpse into her character or even personality. The prose is pretty nice though, I like it. There are some rough parts here and there, but overall good job with it.
Overall, I thought the two chapters were decent in building intrigue and mystery but lacked that grip that makes you want to continue reading for more. So for now, I’m gonna put this in the “maybe I’ll read more” category. That’s basically it. Don’t really have much else to say.
