This seemed a little... I don't know.
It felt forced, for lack of a better word. The MC seemed to be crass and insensitive at various points, like how one would communicate with a best friend.
But then, he begins expressing his doubts and worries about the friendship being as it was before. This feels out of place. I would think that if he was having those doubts, that he would not have said such insensitive things that he did. It just didn't feel real to me, nor did it feel like Saeko was particularly broken up about the loss of her partner and having to be a single mother. It felt like those were details put into the story for this specific setup of the MC returning to his soon-to-be-single-mother crush, and not how an actual person in Saeko's circumstances would realistically act.

This is an interesting premise you've set up, and I look forward to seeing how it unfolds. I will say that the narrator seems rather erudite, to the point I questioned some of his word choices. He monologued like a poet, but I could find a reason in-universe why he would use such detailed and archaic thinking, to the point it was clearly stylistic of the author but nor informing much on the character. Too much of that can be a bad thing but it wasn't enough to take me out of it yet.

The issue isn't Reed being in the Menagerie. She's more than proven herself capable of taking care of the dragons given her extensive knowledge of them. The issue is her sneaking in and being there UNSUPERVISED, which is bad for any number of reasons.

Also, who's to say that Reed Soulbonded with the dragon during her visits, and that it wasn't before then? Go back and read the previous story, and you'll see that there might be a moment way back then.
