I think the problem is there's nothing really playing up the "awkwardness" part. It doesn't feel awkward, it feels like the surface-level "keeping everything the same" situation is all there is on the surface, I don't feel any tension in the moment. So even though things HAVE changed, I don't FEEL that change in the dialogue or the thoughts of the characters, which means all I'm looking at is a conversation where things haven't really changed, followed by a sudden "well now I'm uncomfortable" from the narrator that the dialogue didn't really convey properly.
