Despite this one seemingly blowing up right away, I was skeptical at first (well, I was skeptical about a lot of romcom entries tbh, but that’s beside the point). With a pretty cover and an almost screaming “clickbait” concept, my hopes were low - that it would end up being just that and nothing else. In the end, however, I was… kinda right (?) but wrong at the same time.
Vtuber, for me, *is* in fact just that. But it doesn’t *need* to be anything more than that. This one is as cookie-cutter of a romcom that it can get, and that’s the strength that it has over every other entry in this prompt. There’s a reason why I often teased it as the quintessential harem show, and that’s actually the immense charm it brings to the table. Quirky characters, crazy interactions, the perfect blend between romance and comedy, it has them all.
While others may look at the romcom prompt and try to “spice things up” with their unique take on it, either in their settings or themes, Vtuber stands out with the old but gold message of “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” - sometimes, the most standard of romcoms is the most successful.
