My mom used to tell me all about how little people did to accommodate disabilities when she was younger. They just didn't understand those things back then, especially mental handicaps. Her school really didn’t do much compared to what is available now. And don't even get me started on how some people who didn’t have caring families were just abandoned. I have a theory that a lot of older homeless people out there were those rejected by their families in those days. So I definitely see how easy it would be for people to sour to life.
You're right about not putting too much pressure on yourself. Having an impairment is already stressful enough, but worrying too much about others expectations can be just as bad. Everyone has a pace of how they do things, and it's good that you have yours, especially with writing. I like that you don't force it on others though. You're right that not everyone will jive with the same mentality. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.
I kinda worry about the first guy I mentioned in my other comment. No idea where he is now, since it's been a few years, but I do hope he's doing alright.
