I had a longer plotline for Hiroyuki's family life with his divorced parents (and his father's headstrong influence) but I never really found a good place to put it in the story. I decided it was better to keep it light and introduce just a bit of Hiroyuki's background here in this chapter, to explain Hiroyuki's "charge forward!!!" attitude in the earlier chapters. Looking back, I'm actually happier with this characterization for him (instead of my longer version) because I didn't overdo his character with a bunch of emotional family baggage.

Hiroyuki awkwardly trying to cheer Mia up and fumbling his words is 110% inspired from myself though 😂 i panic in situations like that, and Hiroyuki got to channel my awkwardness (but thankfully in a way that shows how much he cares!!)

" sometimes the love rivals are too nice and sometimes they are cat boys…..there is no winning here…. " 😭 it's so TRUE. You can't fight the cat boy. You just can't.

But yes! I wanted the father to have both good motivations (trying to save his daughter) but perhaps have him going about things the wrong way. I didn't want him to be a villainous character, just perhaps a misguided one, who until now didn't have anyone else he could rely on to help him with the problem 😢 so he thought he HAD to do this. (Though he could have relied on Mia sooner! But I feel like it's hard for parents to think of their own kids that way.)

Ahaha! Being on Honeyfeed does take me back to the summer 😆 so I know what you mean. But you are in college, right? College makes time move differently. Semesters seem so long, and the summers so far away!

Oh wow you're right! This really is an "opposite" from the original -- both in theme, and in all the writing structures that you chose to invert! Protagonist to Impersonal Narrator, Personal-Scale to Global-Scale...you really put a lot of detail into this, even for something that you had to write quickly for the deadline (I do hope this made it into the yoasobi contest in time!!)

And yes, I didn't write for the yoasobi contest 😅 I don't mind writing darker stories (I've written tragedies and horror stories before!!) But writing something that potentially promotes self-harm goes against my personal morals, so that's why I decided not to participate. Although I might write a darker story one day, it won't include elements like that x)

With the "message transcending the limits of the novel" I mean that it is a message that is a moral that people can really learn from, and use in their own lives, outside of reading this book c:

Sometimes novels end with a message like "Time travel is bad" which is nice and all xD but doesn't exactly "leave the limits of the novel" because time travel doesn't exist. But your story definitely tried to tackle a topic that's very real in the world, and provide a positive message about beauty standards!

I do hope more people read this x) especially now that it's on the front page featured!!

Shakespeare's plays are (jokingly 🤣) referred to here in the USA like this:
"In Shakespeare's tragedies, everyone dies in the end."
"In Shakespeare's romances, everyone gets married in the end."

Shakespeare's romance stories always have all the characters end up as a "couple" by the end of the play x) so this reminded me of that! Because everyone ends up with a partner!

Oooh, an entry that's from the perspective of the gods playing chess! (Or rather, playing chess with people's lives 😆) That's definitely a different perspective, and I think it's a really interesting way to jump into the story! If it ties into the original "Invitation from Thanatos" piece, that's awesome.

...also they're flirting with each other the whole time 🤣 which, honestly, that somehow seems accurate for the deities of Life/Death to be flirting while fighting over someone's life. The meta-perspective on this is really a fascinating interpretation of the prompt :D I feel like you could definitely write a whole story off of this!

The idea of waiting for your lover to return from war is always heartbreaking :( Watching her slowly lose hope and start to relate to the guy across the street is so sad.

But I'm so glad the lover returned in the end, and this had a positive twist!! x) ✨ I always appreciate that!

Also if this had a relationship to the original story/music video, sorry if I missed it 😆 I haven't watched or read them. But if you wrote this as a "alternative perspective" on those pieces, that's really cool!

From the first couple of lines, I immediately thought the dialogue was definitely me hearing "one side" of a conversation -- perhaps a therapy session? Someone suffering from insomnia...and maybe problems with their relationship? Oooh and the alcohol too 😖

But jogging without glasses is absolutely an experience I can relate to xD Sometimes I like to just exist in the fuzzy world that is the glasses-less experience, and talk to people without having an idea what they look like. It's surreal in a way...

Though, I find myself relating even more to the thought spiral >_<
"My mind began imagining alternate realities. One where he never proposed to me. Another where I never quit my job. Even one where I hadn't been born in that maternity."
Sometimes you just start cursing every little thing: where you are, how you got there. The alternate-reality spiral is ROUGH, and I think you captured that feeling really well in that paragraph. Just such a strong representation of a very human thought pattern.

But I'm so glad that even after being frightened and scared, and hearing the "You're not one of us" playing over and over again in their head...they still kept running. ❤️ Powerful.

I really like the dialogue storytelling structure of this piece! I think you took a risk with it, but one that paid off <3 I love atypical storytelling POVs, and I think you're absolutely doing great with these different styles. (Even in YADA, we saw narratives from Ru's perspective, from the Escape Room game, from Baba's viewpoint, and in the end, from a storytelling-breaking 4th wall viewpoint as the narrative breaks down...so I think you're very talented at conveying a consistent storyline while using different viewpoint perspectives!!)

I'm just sad now I missed out on reading "the building" 😆 but I feel lucky that I've gotten to read your other entries for this contest! These have all been so unique <3

Ooooh~ A witch-hunt era interpretation of the yoasobi prompt? Color me intrigued!

A cripple who trapped a witch, and thus gained his place among the villagers. And a witch who harbors the spirit of death, being "caught" now and attacked by the villagers.
Yet, the witch let herself be caught? Just for a chance to talk to the cripple? Oooh and with lines like honey, the witch starts telling the cripple HE was the courageous one, and HE ought to be cherished as he deserved.
(Honestly the witch's dialogue there was really good, I actually started believing her myself and had to catch myself like "Wait, this is probably a trap" xD)

But I do like that he eventually turned around, and decided to approach her anyway -- sensing her desperation and loneliness, and knowing those feelings himself. So the cripple has brought himself into her salt circle...does this mean they'll be condemned to death by the village, together? 😥

Still, really interesting take on the prompt, and this has a chilling and haunting vibe that's very, very cool. The last line of "This is escape." is such a strong ending note, and it gives me shivers!! 👏

Two friends: the greatest souls of Life/Eros, off on a mission to not just "play heroes" but "BE heroes."

And so they became a scientist and a diplomat...and honestly, I really enjoyed reading about them growing up, struggling to do good, and then finally having that girl join their cause and spark the revolution that would help further their endeavors...

...but of course, it's not easy to STAY a hero, now is it? ;)

The Diplomat just couldn't give up on that taste of power and money, could he? He started to build his own Babylon tower in Tokyo 😭
A TIME MACHINE THOUGH. I wasn't expecting that!!! Oh man, giving a corrupt Diplomat a time machine doesn't seem like a good idea.

But the time machine sent the Diplomat to a bleak future, and perhaps trapped him there, to descend into the arms of Thanatos! While hopefully in the present, the Scientist can continue his goals to help the world 😭

This is a really interesting philosophical piece about the concept of Well-Intentioned Ideologists, and the question of whether or not those in power can manage to maintain it without being led astray by its temptations. I was not expecting such a piece of writing to come from the yoasobi contest, but it's a really fascinating direction!!

Also!!! Glad you could compete in the contest 😆 and that I could (accidentally) be the reason you saw the deadline in time! (Thank you for checking on the finalists and being happy to see me there 😭❤️ that makes me so overjoyed to know!!)
Even if you wrote this quickly, I think it's quite well done. I also think you did really well at writing a story in just 1.450 words!! It feels very complete and I get a sense of closure, which is quite an accomplishment for a short story!

Also I do plan to finish reading Polisophis I have had some family issues going on lately and have had to travel a lot to give support to some relatives who have been in the hospital. But I fully intend on reading to the end! 👍 For now, I wanted to offer my support on this piece!! Thank you for sharing it! :D

If BBQ ribs was my last meal, I think I would cry 😭

Okay, more seriously, this story immediately starts with a very strong and tragic topic: the idea of a man who has lost his wife and kids through an accident, when he was the one driving. That alone is enough to make me teary-eyed 😭😭 I felt so bad for him, and I was genuinely relieved when he couldn't make the jump.

His wife's words in the memory, telling him he is "ruled by Eros" 😢
Even as he tries to beg for Thanatos, I feel like his wife is trying to tell him to "live on." And the fact that the wife showed up in his friend's dream, begging for him to help her husband, just proves that.

The ending was really uplifting and sweet...and even with a spark of humor with the "I'll need a mop" to clean up the spilled beer 🤣👍 This was such a nice short story and I feel like you managed to capture a ton of really heart-breaking yet beautiful emotions!! Great job!

Thank you!!! There were many stories I thought would be chosen over mine, so I am honored to be here 🥹 I really appreciate the support! ❤️ (And seriously, thank you for the vote ✨ it means more to me than I can say!)

As for this short story, I totally agree with you -- their romance changed their lives for the better, for both of them. The ending leaves it open to the idea that perhaps they both survived. And maybe the girl went on to do something else with her life, leaving him alone to find his own path as well. Until they are both in a better place, and can maybe meet again~
Of course, that is a more positive interpretation, but I like that the ending is open and the reader can make their own conclusion! I think that "open ending" makes it a more powerful piece of prose.

And yes!! I started putting the copy and paste message because I wanted to compliment the writing of these yoasobi entries, but I didn't want to seem like I was complimenting or promoting harmful behaviors 😖 so a small copy/paste message was my best compromise!
I am very glad to see you include trigger warnings in your Author's Note, and that you are approaching the topic with respect. 👍 It *is* a tightrope between respecting the topic versus stigmatizing it, and I think you've balanced that well!

I'm not a HUGE board-game player myself, but half of my family is OBSESSED with them 😂 so I have learned to embrace it!! At least Caisey will have some weird stories to tell Rina when he returns to her. I'm sure games with the Fates never quite go normally (getting the feeling at least ONE of them will try to manipulate fate and cheat at least once per session.)

Rina befriending Clotho would be the cutest thing though? Rina could give her a makeover (as best as possible), teach her how to dance, and make Clotho the most desirably frightening bachelorette in the underworld 😌❤️ all the while Caisey is standing to the side like "Wait, I'm supposed to be the main character!" 🤣

I'm happy to read :D Your story was really enjoyable and almost felt like a disney ride x) I never knew what to expect around the corner, but I knew it would be crazy and fun!! And I know you said you're anxious ending stories, but I think your ending here was really nice and wrapped things up, while also letting the reader think that Caisey and Rina's adventures would continue on
