    Author's Commentary #127:

Time to talk about Chapter 127: One annoying asshole.
Though first, I think we need to call the fire department because Iori just scorched Clifford's ass with some of the sickest burns. All joking aside, I do love how Iori completely asserts dominance over Clifford and puts him in his place. Clifford, was designed to be a one-dimensional hatable antagonist, but it's only now that it's revealed he's also an egotist. Iori was spot on with all her insults.

As for the game, I had a lot of fun writing it. Considering how many Bongcloud variations have already been in the series, it was natural that the Queen's Bongcloud opening would get a spotlight. I also loved how the game ended with the pawn at d5 being pivotal to Clifford's defeat. Now let's get his bio out of the way.

クリフォード・グラスブロワー (Clifford Glassblower) is how his name is spelled in katakana. He's actually based off of the character Juji Sazan from Sentai Daishikkaku.

His birthday is January 11th. The reason for that is the date the chapter that saw Juji's debut was released.

His favorite piece is the queen, mainly because he worships it as the most powerful piece on the board.

And before we end, I also want to talk about Sheila and the brand new character, Hazel Hemmings. Sheila is the granddaughter of Wiley and as such, has tried her best to distance herself from him, mainly to improve her own life. This is why she ended up getting a bunch of tattoos and picking up vaping.

シーラ・フリッシュ (Sheila Frisch) is how Sheila's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is January 7th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

As for her favorite piece, she actually doesn't have one. The reason why is because she hates chess. Though if she did have a favorite, it would likely be the pawn.

ヘーゼル・ヘミングス (Hazel Hemmings) is how Hazel's name is spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is December 2nd. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this day is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the bishop, mainly because she's also religious.

Hazel takes the cake as being the most underdeveloped character in the series. To be fair, it makes sense as her whole purpose was to replace Imelda as SPCM. To try and make her stand out a bit more from the others, I had her be a Raticinatio party supporter rather than a Misericordia one like most of the others.

Speaking of witch, I feel I should mention that while subtle, I've now changed the state Wiley represents in the senate from Kansas to Missouri. This is because St. Louis is considered the chess capitol of the US. I've also shuffled around some of the places the SPCMs hail from. Sheila is now from St. Louis instead of Kansas, while Clifford is now from Washington DC instead of Seattle. The others are unchanged with Hazel now representing New Orleans, which is actually where chess legend Paul Morphy was born and raised. It's also where Peter lives, so it made sense to have a secret puzzle cafe be there.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:127

    Oct 31, 2024

    Author's Commentary #126:

Time to talk about Chapter 126: An unpleasant encounter.
Turns out the cabby was actually an SPCM named Mariano Mario. Before I talk about him, I want to talk about an important change that has occurred in the revision, that being the fact that Imelda is no longer an SPCM.

There were multiple reasons for this, with the top one being that she was just so unlikable, I felt having her be an SPCM would drag down the reputation of the other American SPCMs. I also couldn't see Wiley being OK with having her be one, as while he begrudgingly did allow someone who is politically opposed to him, but good at chess, be one, Imelda is at best an intermediate and far too toxic as she'll descend into a petty tantrum at the smallest of things. There's also a more spoilery reason I decided to boot her from the American SPCM lineup, but I'll discuss that in a future commentary. Now let's talk about Mariano.

マリアーノ・マリオ (Mariano Mario) is how his name is spelled in katakana. He's obviously a reference to Super Mario.

His birthday is March 10th, since March 10th is Mario day.

His favorite piece is the knight, mainly because it can jump over the other pieces, much like Mario jumps over enemies. And to further the Mario references, his rating is actually 1981, the year Mario first made his debut in Donkey Kong.

As for the hotel, it is heavily based off the New York Marriott Marquis hotel in Times Square. For the cafe itself, I wanted to have it be more out in the open and work more like a members-only restaurant. This is why I had it be in plain sight, with the only requirement for entering it being that you have a WWCF card and rating.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:126

    Oct 31, 2024

    Author's Commentary #125:

Time to talk about Chapter 125: Street chess.
Since the girls are in New York, I naturally had to include a chapter featuring Street chess. Union square is actually the place where most street chess players tend to congregate in New York.

For the game, I decided to have Mimoko play a less common, but still effective opening, mainly to prove her skill. That opening being, the Hungarian or King's fianchetto opening. I debated having her open with the Bird opening, but ultimately went with the Hungarian, mainly because she's not the type to try out reckless openings when there's a mission at hand.

Speaking of Prussian Tony, he's a homage to the street chess player, Russian Paul. プロイセンのトニー (Prussian Tony) is how his name is written in Japanese.
(If I made any mistakes with the translation, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is July 30th. I chose the date at random so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday. That being said, it is worth mentioning that while this was unintentional, he does share his birthday with Italian-American grandmaster and current 2nd best chess player in the world, Fabiano Caruana.

His favorite piece is the rook, mainly because he's an end game player.

As for the cabby, all I'll mention about him for now is the fact that in the original draft, he initially transported the girls from the ruined home to Union square. Here however, he claimed to have been in the area when he noticed Mimoko taking on Tony. More will be revealed about him in the next chapter.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:125

    Author's Commentary #124:

Time to talk about Chapter 124: Meadow Hay Massacre.
The Iori and Mick showdown has begun, and naturally, Iori's going for maximum disrespect. Though instead of the Bongcloud, she's going for a Meadow Hay Mistake and sacrificing her rook early on.

If you're savvy with the chess world, you might have heard that Grandmaster Brandon Jacobson infamously played this move and it's black counterpart against Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, won, and got banned for suspected cheating, even though he didn't cheat. Inspired, Magus Carlson ended up trying the move for all 11 games of Chess.com's Early Titled Tuesday on May 7th 2024. He ended up earning 8.5 out of 11 possible points. As a result, debate has stirred on the Meadow Hay's true potential, but it is definitely a difficult move to master, much like the Bongcloud.

I actually had a lot of trouble making this game, mainly because it took nearly a good half hour of resetting to get the bot to move to e5 so I could pull off the gambit. After that, I just used the assist tool and destroyed it in order to get a good game. Despite the turmoil though, this is definitely one of my favorite games as the ending of the game was poetic justice with Iori choosing not to mate Mick by promoting to a queen, but by promoting to a rook.

As for Mick's fate, it's easily one of the most brutal in the series thus far. He really lucked out when he decided to chase after Iori, though to be fair, he wasn't exactly a good person and would frequently use his DESPER on unsuspecting people for fun. One final thing I'll mention about Mick is that his old rating of 1011 referenced the fact that New York was the 11th state to join the union.

Now that Mick's out of the picture, the girls can steal his ride in order to reach the city. I will confirm that he didn't actually booby trap the car, but Iori decided it was better safe than sorry. As for why he showed up at the manor in the first place, the one he took there seemed to expect the girl's arrival. As for who this mysterious person is, that won't be touched on for quite a while, and most certainly not in this season.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:124

    Oct 31, 2024

    Author's Commentary #123:

Time to talk about Chapter 123: Zinnia Broadstone.
There's a lot to talk about, but first I'll talk a bit more about the dystopian novel Glasstone, as this was originally when it was first mentioned. Glasstone is actually an original novel that I created for this story. While it's possible I might turn it into a short novel, for now it will primarily exist just in this story. One thing I will elaborate more on are the sheepblossom.

The sheepblossom are humanoid sheep with hoofed feet and human hands. They are able to photosynthesize, have longer lifespans than humans, and tend to spend their days peacefully grazing around acting like sheep. However, there is a dark secret. Once someone is turned into a sheepblossom, they lose their personality and free will. the antagonist and his chosen elites, the shepherds, may take control of them at anytime and force them to do whatever they please. Stampede through town, destroy property and wildlife, and even killing are all on the table. The sheepblossom themselves can even be cooked and eaten by the shepherds.

As for why Tombstone Arizona was turned into a skyscraper metropolis, the antagonist in the book, Kon Iving, whose name is a pun on conniving, hated the Wild west theme of the town, and sought to erase it and replace it with a city of glass. Thanks to the DESPER, Pewler has now managed to do just that in the real world. Now, Tombstone is known as Glasstone, and is quickly on pace to become the largest city in Arizona, and possibly the US as a whole.

Now onto Carol's past. This isn't the full story, but it is most of it. Due to Carol hailing from two powerful political families, the Broadstone family on her father's side and the Kuninganna family on her mother's side, her mother would constantly berate and physically reprimand her for not acting the way she wanted as she believed Carol's edgy personality would drag down the reputation of the family. Since she couldn't go all out on disciplining her at home due to fear of being charged with child abuse laws, she instead requested that the head of the politics club at the college, Imelda Berrinche, be responsible for "reforming" her daughter.

Imelda obliged and was given the go-ahead to use as much physical violence necessary to get Carol in line. Even being granted permission to kill her should she prove to be "unsalvageable". It truly was a hellish experience for poor Carol, and it only got worse for her after her boyfriend was murdered. Now she's back in America and fears for her life. There is still one more notable piece of Carol's backstory, but that will be touched on in a future chapter.

Now time to discuss a major change from the original draft. Originally, the three were set to warp to the old house where Carol and her boyfriend, Christian had lived. However, I decided it didn't make sense, as that wasn't Carol's original home. This is why the three have now been warped to the Kuninganna manor. The bare room is actually Carol's old room.

The other major change is the fact that Mick Leopard is now the Broadstone family chauffeur instead of a cabby, and appears earlier. He's still a Desperado though, but his rating has been buffed to 1346, making him just two points higher than Iori's current rating of 1344. I'll talk more about him in a future commentary.

One final thing I'll mention is that the chapter was originally called, Carol's past, but I decided to change it to Zinnia Broadstone. The reasoning for that was simply because I felt having Carol's original name be the title would give the chapter more impact. Otherwise, the meaning behind it is the same as it illustrates that Carol's past will be the topic of the chapter.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:123

    Oct 30, 2024

    Author's Commentary #242:

Time to talk about the Season 7 intro chapter, Chapter 242: Back from Streama festivalen.
In the end, I decided it was best to jump straight back into the main story, meaning Season 7 is here. But before I talk about that, I first want to announce that Season 4's revisions are finally complete. Unlike the first 3 seasons, this one underwent some major changes, notably the addition of a game between Bette and Iori as well as some characters being rewritten and events shuffled around. Season 5 is also going to be getting revised, but those revisions shouldn't take to long as the most significant change for that will likely be just shuffling some events around. With that out of the way, back to talking about this chapter.

Canonically, this takes place after Streamer Royale ends, so this is now the most current event in the Jouzu-verse timeline. Streamer royale is also likely to not be finished for a while due to the contest, but even then, I never planned to delay Season 7 until after it's conclusion. One thing I did intend to do though was port over every chess game played in that novel to this one.

So far, only one game has been played so far, and it was between Iori and Red Reaper. The greater significance of this though is the fact that now Iori has met and faced Red Reaper. The game was a bullet match with only a minute on the clock, so mistakes were prone to happen. And yes, it was another Halloween gambit game. And they won't stop coming, especially considering Halloween is coming up soon.

As for the season itself, I imagine daily uploads will cease, mainly due to the contest, but I'll still try to upload at least once a week. This first part of the season will be a bit unique as it will focus on not just our main cast, but some of the other characters that will be showing up at the Chess Olympics. I'm actually still in the process of drafting what some of these characters will be like, not to mention I haven't even written a single game for the actual Olympics yet. But needless to say, I actually feel this arc could become one of the most defining moments of the series. I hope you're looking forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:242

    Oct 29, 2024

    Author's Commentary #113:

Time to talk about Chapter 113: Double trouble Muzio.
This time, we're shifting focus back to Okisato, who was able to get rescued from the top of the Tokyo sky tree. As for how exactly he was rescued, he called his father and had him send a helicopter to get him down. Then once he was rescued, he met up with the others. The big thing to note in the chapter is the fact that Prof. Manfred von Skaberghast, who briefly appeared in Chapter 25 back in Season 1, has finally made his proper debut. Originally, Season 4 served to be his proper debut, but I decided to have him cameo a bit earlier in Season1 along with some other Desperados, mainly to better hype him up and show him off before he became a major player in the story.

マンフレート・フォン・スカベルハスト教授 (Prof. Manfred von Skaberghast) is how his name would be spelled in Japanese.

His birthday is November 9th which he shares with Soviet-Latvian grandmaster and 8th chess world champion, Mikhail Tal.

His favorite piece is the pawn, mainly because they can defend things with ease and make the game easier for him.

Skaberghast is a very intelligent, but lazy and sadistic mad scientist. He works at Stanford and owns a private island. Thanks to the effects of the DESPER, he can warp from it to the lab and back with ease. The DESPER also granted him an unlimited smoothie glass which can refill by magic whenever Skaberghast wishes it to. He's used the DESPER to get many other perks as well, but despite being one of it's inventors, he still does not know every secret there is about it which is why he created the DESPER research team in order to do the heavy lifting while he relaxes. Skaberghast was actually one of the oldest characters I created however, he didn't get put in any of my stories until now.

The game featured showcases one of my favorite sets of gambits, the Muzio gambit and the Double Muzio gambit. The big question I had when deciding I'd have a Double Muzio gambit game was who would play it. In the end, I decided to have Skaberghast be the one yo play it.

There main reason for that was because I wanted to show off his chess skills to show that he is an imposing threat. While Skaberghast won't be the main antagonist of Season 4, he'll certainly be a long-term antagonist in the series going forward, thus I needed to showcase that he is a very large threat both on and off the chessboard.

Part of his swift victory was due to Yuusuke's incompetence though. Poor Yuusuke really is starting to become the sandbag of the series right after Numakawa. He'll get his chance to shine eventually though.

One thing I will clarify is that Maida is not currently present with the chess club. Since school is on break, everyone's meeting on their own time, and thus Maida is not obligated to supervise the club unless it competes at a tournament as a team. While Maida has been a little out of the action, I do plan to make her more relevant in future arcs.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
