    Author's Commentary #9:

Time to talk about Chapter 9: Museum of mummies part 2.
Whelp, they all got mummified. It was obvious from the start, though what wasn't obvious was that Mochi might be a traitor. I'm still going to hold off on going more in depth on Mochi, but before I give her basic bio as well as Bianka's, I first want to talk about the villain, Carl McDonald.

The whole joke about Carl McDonald is that he's meant to be a parody of Col Sanders. His name has further fast food references with his first name being a reference to Carl's Jr., and his last name being a reference to, well, McDonald's. He also hates chicken and is from New Mexico, further increasing the irony that he looks and sounds like Col Sanders. Another fun fact is that his henchman, Jimmy, is a reference to Jimmy John's.

As for the immobilization serum, that, as well as this entire arc for that matter were inspired by the Get Smart episode, "The Mummy". In the episode, protagonist Maxwell Smart finds himself captured and wrapped up like a mummy in order to be smuggled out of the country. He is also injected with a serum that immobilizes him almost instantly, to prevent him from moving around. The serum in Escape Witch is similar to that, but takes 30 minutes to take effect. There is a variation of the serum that takes effect immediately, but low-ranking members of Illumous like Sayuri, don't have access to it. One other thing I'll mention is that this isn't the only one of my novels that the immobilization serum appears in. Now let's talk a bit about Mochi.

名智 望哉 (Myouchi Mochika) is how her name is spelled in kanji.
望哉 means "hope" and "contradiction" while, 名智 means "achievement" and "wise".

Her birthday is August 21st which she shares with Momo Akanegakubo from Shokugeki no Soma. The reason for that is because her character was actually inspired by Momo, and funnily enough, Mochi actually used to be a chef, and a prodigious one at that, before deciding to become a detective.

As for Bianka, 湯詰 美杏香 (Yuzume Bianka) is how her name is spelled in kanji. 美杏香 means "beautiful", "apricot", and "appealing".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is September 15th, which she shares with Catherine from Fire Emblem Three houses. The reason for that is that Bianka was loosely based off her.

As for Bianka, she is into women and is ironically a womanizer. The reason she became like this was actually due to her witnessing Reika kiss a woman as part of an undercover mission. The two are biological sisters despite being nearly 10 years apart in age. Their mother died shortly after giving birth to Bianka, which led to Reika being the one to primarily raise her. As such, Bianka idolized her and began imitating her, which resulted in her trying to kiss a girl at school. After maturing and joining the police, Bianka eased up on her skirt-chasing ways, though ended up relapsing after Reika's death. Reika's death also caused her to bleach her hair blonde and spray tan her skin. Her natural hair color is actually chestnut brown, and she is very close with Mochi.

You're probably wondering why I'm talking about Bianka here since she doesn't appear in the chapter or arc. The reason for that is because Bianka was originally going to be part of this arc, and end up kidnapped instead of Serika. However, that was before I finalized Serika's character as back in those stages, she was intended to be more of a side character. In a later draft, Bianka was actually going to come with everyone to the museum, but leave before she could get kidnapped. Since that didn't flow well with the story, I decided not to have her be part of this arc in the first place.

Before I end this, there are two things I want to mention. First, the reason Sayuri changed her plan is because she figured out Yuni is Fubuki's daughter and believes she is just as smart as her. Second, The Mochi here is the same one that appears in Spice of life. That is all I will say regarding that.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #17:

Time to talk about Chapter 17: Mimi's first cook-off.
First off, this is a remake original chapter. I did add it to the original Spice of life, but only as a bonus chapter towards the end of the original series, Chapter 109 to be exact. Here, it occurs where it was intended to occur.

There were a multitude of reasons I decided to write both this chapter and the next. One was to feature more cook-offs in the series, while the other was to provide more character development for Mimi, Helga, and Sundae early on.

As for Mimi regrowing her hair instantly after drinking some milk, that is a biological trait unique to her, and a certain family. Since revealing the name of the family would spoil some things, I'll just leave everyone with a hint; the family I'm referring to does appear both in the original Spice of life and in novels that take place in the same universe as Spice of life. Drinking milk also can heal both minor injuries and broken bones for both Mimi and members of this mysterious family. Feel free to speculate on who this family is.

Funnily enough though, the concept of drinking milk to recover is actually a reference to One piece where Luffy and Brook drink milk to heal themselves.

As for the cook-off, it's going to Round 2. Look forward to the conclusion next chapter. One thing I'll clarify is that Mimi still has all the spy gadgets she had on her when she was frozen. However, some of them were damaged. After being thawed out a second time, Stitch actually managed to restore Mimi's invisible thread gadget, while Waki and Rika helped Mimi in restoring her other gadgets. Mimi's actually been living with Rika, and has quickly adapted to the modern world. While I said in a previous comment that Mimi is based on Lily from Spy kyoushitsu, she's actually much smarter than she seems. She doesn't always act that way, but her adaptability is by far her greatest strength. The mini-Hylda is also a figment of her imagination, though perhaps a bit of Hylda's spirit is present within it as well.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #16:

Time to talk about Chapter 16: Nero the chūnibyō.
In the original, this was actually two separate chapters, those being Chapter 104 and Chapter 105. It was also the last chapter I wrote before beginning the rewrite. While Nero technically debuted in Chapter 71 of the original Spice of life, Chapter 104 was where he was properly introduced. Now let's talk about him.

ネロ (Nero) is how his codename is spelled in Japanese. However, he is actually the infamous 0mni-god, Muramasa Jouzu. As such, 村正 上手 (Muramasa Jouzu) is how it is spelled in Japanese.
上手 means "skillful" while 村正 means "village" and "correct", however, it is also the exact same surname of Sengo Muramasa, a famous Japanese swordsmith.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Nero's birthday is October 10th, which he notably shares with Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto, Xanxus from Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, and Gintoki Sakata from Gintama.

His favorite food is mangoes, while his favorite drink is a tropical fruit smoothie.

As I was writing the remake, I actually decided to give Nero a larger role in the story, which is why I felt he needed to be introduced much earlier than in the original. Him being 0mnipotent (yes he does spell it with a 0) was also how I planned to explain away how Mimi's world merged with the current one. Speaking of which, Muramasa Jouzu is much more powerful than he seems, though this series won't properly showcase that. Though I might end up writing a novel that does, so look out for that.

Speaking of which, since Muramasa Jouzu is what ultimately ties my novels together, the universe all of them take place in could be referred to as "The Jouzu-verse".

Finally, Murr Mantis is dead. Since he was destroyed by the dark flames of destruction, he can't be revived either, except by Muramasa Jouzu. Speaking of which, his dark flames of destruction could be comparable to Yogiri Takatou's power from My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered, however, unlike Yogiri, Muramasa Jouzu can choose to revive those he's killed. His flames of destruction also have various levels to them with the most basic level essentially being on par with Yogiri's ability. His next level up can erase all memory of the thing he destroys with his flame, essentially erasing it from existence, while the next level erases the target across all timelines, dimensions, and universes, and the next level up after that erases the target from existence across all timelines, dimensions, and universes.

Sometimes, Muramasa Jouzu actually destroys some of the surrounding air and space, but simply restores it since that's also effortless for him. In short, he's very skilled at destruction, but he can also restore things as he chooses.

As for why he chooses to have his alter-ego be Nero, entertainment. That's also why he chooses to pay for smoothies instead of making them himself, though to be fair, he is using his powers to create money out of thin air, and real money at that. None of Nero's cash is counterfeit as he simply rewrites everyone's minds that the money he creates is legit. As such, using money created by Nero would be like using standard cash, and best of all, he can create as much as he wants and the markets wouldn't be affected in the slightest. After all, creating a fortune of cash and circulating it without having the markets being affected in the slightest is 0mni 101 for Muramasa Jouzu.

Next chapter, a new mini-arc with a spotlight on Mimi will begin. This mini-arc was only added to the original Spice of life as a bonus arc so it technically originates from the remake. I hope you look forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #64:

Time to talk about Chapter 64: A rodeo of rooks.
First things first, how did Rodeo get so good so quickly. The easy answer is plot armor. The longer answer is the fact that he's got a knack for chess, but just needed proper training. He actually won the mini-tournament back in Chapter 23, and was only doing poorly in the tournament due to him being in the highest rated section. Not to mention, Okisato and Mimoko analyzed all of the piece of shit's match data to properly form a counterattack strategy. All Rodeo had to do was memorize all the possibilities.

As such, I felt going back and forth between the match and the flashbacks was a good move. Speaking of which, I ended up having more fun writing this match than I thought I would. It was just a simple me vs the chess.com bot, once again, but I actually enjoyed writing the dialogue that went with the match. A large part of that is likely because the piece of shit loses. Now let's talk about the final proxy, Gustavs Kalniņš.

グスタフ・カルニシュ (Gustavs Kalniņš) is how his name would be written in katakana. He used to be a shot putter, however greed consumed him and he became more of a gambler. That led to him meeting the piece of shit, who promised him a large fortune if he beat him in a game of chess. Obviously, he lost and became a proxy as a result.

His birthday is July 26th. The reason for that being that the shot in men's open shot put competitions weighs 7.26 kilograms.

As for Gustavs' favorite chess piece, it is the king, since that's the piece of shit's favorite piece and the piece of shit is in full control of all his proxies. However, the piece of shit would claim that the favorite piece of all his proxies is the pawn, since that's all they are to him.

Speaking of the piece of shit, he's about to get the shit beaten out of him at long last. Look forward to the next chapter because it's gonna be one hell of a beatdown.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #7:

Time to talk about Chapter 7: A new look.
This chapter came to be after I decided the Escape Witch would be a darker and more story driven series than originally planned. Originally, the series was going to be more lighthearted and episodic and essentially be just Madoka and co get kidnapped by the villain of the week and have to escape. However, the main reason I decided to make the series darker, was Fujiko.

I'll elaborate a bit more on that as the story progresses. For now, I'll just give a basic bio on Fujiko.

山口 富姫子 (Yamaguchi Fujiko) is how her name is spelled in kanji.
富姫子 means "wealthy", "princess", and "young".
Her surname, 山口 means "mountains" and "opening".

Her birthday is March 15th, which is known as the Ides of March and the day Julius Caesar was assassinated.

The biggest inspiration behind her character was Otoya Takechi from Akuma no Riddle. Since I was watching that anime at the time of writing Escape Witch, it ended up having some influence on a few of the characters. Yumeko (Tsurutsuru) was not one of them, however.

山口 夢虹 (つるつる) (Yamaguchi Yumeko (Tsurutsuru)) is how her name and nickname would be written in Japanese.
Her name, 夢虹, means "dream" and "discord", while her nickname, つるつる, means smooth which is fitting since she's bald.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is September 13th which is Bald is beautiful day, as well as Niles Thorndyke's birthday, though he was chosen to have that day be his birthday due to it also being the day I uploaded the first chapter of The Yowie Hunt.

In the original, Yumeko actually had medium-length brunette hair styled in pigtails. She also has that style in the Spice of life remake as well. As for why she's bald, Fujiko shaved her and destroyed all her hair follicles All joking aside, I'll elaborate more on these two as the story progresses since I don't want to spoil things. The same goes for both Bianka, Kurobane, and Mochi.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #15:

Time to talk about Chapter 15: Taste test.
The point of this chapter was mainly to once again stress the point that in this series, the taste of the dish is what truly decides how good it is. However, sometimes bias can corrupt taste, which is why Rika hatched this plan to see if Makihara would call her food delicious if he assumed Masaru made it.

Funnily enough, this chapter could have been considered a filler chapter in the original, however, despite largely being the same content-wise as the original, it will now serve more of a purpose as buildup for the next mini-arc in the next two chapters. The only thing I'll say regarding that is pay attention to what Helga said, and expect to see more Sundae. Speaking of Helga, let's talk about her.

ヘルガ・ヘップバーン (Helga Hepburn) is how her name would be written in katakana. She's actually half-Japanese and was raised by her father's parents. Her hair is naturally white and she looks and sounds almost identical to Mimi's old teammate and lover, Hylda.

Her birthday is on August 13th which is also Obon. She is 18 years old and was in the same graduating class as Rika and Masaru.

    Her favorite food is filet-mignon.

As you've probably started to notice, Mimi is beginning to bring out the good in Helga. Perhaps she will be what ultimately causes Helga to get on better terms with Rika. I won't say any more than that. For the next few chapters, things will deviate from the original so look forward to that.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #14:

Time to talk about Chapter 14: Karaoke night.
This chapter underwent a major change from its original counterpart. That being that Jester no longer appears here and Murr Mantis makes his debut here. Murr Mantis was originally debuted in Chapter 40 of the original Spice of life, but I decided to have him debut earlier here for reasons I'll elaborate more on in a future commentary. All I'll say for now is that he is based off of both Darth Maul and General Grievous from Star Wars as well as Black Mantis from Spy Kyoushitsu. Another big change between this and the original is that this chapter better introduces the fact that Waki is also an ex-assassin like Rika. Speaking of which, let's discuss her.

加勢川 和希 (Kasegawa Waki) is how her name is spelled in kanji. Her first name, 和希, means "harmony" and "wish", while her surname, 加勢川, means "to add", "power", and "river".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).
Her birthday is September 9th, which is National wiener schnitzel day. The reason I chose this is because wiener schnitzels are similar to tonkatsu, which is Waki's favorite food.

As for why Waki is so loyal to Rika, and why she has a crush on Matcha, all that will be revealed in future chapters. Though I will mention that before Waki changed up her image, she used to have pale skin and long dark hair that reached her ankles, and was far less sociable. Believe it or not though, she is actually based off Nao Sadatsuka from Shokugeki no Soma. Though funnily enough, looks more like Ikumi Mito, also from Shokugeki no Soma, after her makeover, aside from the mohawk of course. The gyaru-like act she put on back in Chapters 12 and 13 was actually a suggestion by Rika in order to stand out and trick Makihara into thinking that she was actually Rika in disguise. In the original, that was done because Rika was actually disguised as the shy and timid Hinari, and because proving to Makihara that Waki was not Rika deflated his ego and made him unlikely to suspect anyone else of being Rika in disguise. In this version, the reason was mainly to further humiliate Makihara and make him look more like an idiot. I originally intended to have her always talk and act like a gyaru, but ended up scrapping that idea.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #6:

Time to talk about Chapter 6: The day Yuni met Reika.
Unlike the original chapter, this one is a bit darker as it delves into what Yuni's mother, Fubuki, went through while she was held captive by Illumous. Despite not properly witnessing the entire ordeal, Fubuki believed her first child was killed due to both the pain she felt from Akuma shoving his sharp fingernails into her, and the fact that she saw the body of an infant shortly after.

Due to this, Fubuki's womb was damaged and she constantly had miscarriages after. As for how she was getting pregnant, her partner left her a fridge filled with nothing but his sperm, mainly because he was paranoid something might happen to him because of the work he did with Fubuki. Though one day, Fubuki was able to get pregnant, and eventually give birth to Yuni on February 1st, 2004.

Now allow me to elaborate a bit more on Yuni's birthday. The reason I chose it was due to February 1st being able to be written as the fraction, 2/1. Yeah, believe it or not, that's why I chose the date. Now let's talk a bit more about Reika.

湯詰 怜佳 (Yuzume Reika) is how her name is spelled in kanji. Her first name, 怜佳, means "wise" and "beautiful", which is fitting since she was one of the smartest characters in the series. Her surname, 湯詰, means "hot spring" and "investigate".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is January 5th which is also the date the first chapter of Detective Conan released.

As for Fubuki, Fubuki Dakota is merely an alias she uses. フブキダコタ (Fubuki Dakota) is how it would be written in Japanese. I'll elaborate more on her in a future commentary. For now, I'll just mention that she truly is a journalist, but has merely been labeled a conspiracy theorist thanks to Illumous' influence. She is also the only person in the world to have a worldwide gag-order issued against her. As for what such an order is, it requires law enforcement to always gag Fubuki first when detaining her to prevent her from "spouting nonsense". This also proves that what Fubuki says is true as Illumous is attempting to have her gagged not because she spouts nonsense, but because they fear what she'll say and expose about them.

One final thing I'll mention is that both Reika and Fubuki appear in both Spice of life and Mystery ghost foresight. As for the latter, it was originally going to serve as the means for telling how Yuni came to live with her aunt. As for why Fubuki wanted to become a journalist, it all started when she capturing footage of a murder on her camera while she was still in highschool. She sent the evidence to the police, however, when no action became of it, and one of the victims of the murder continued to be falsely labeled as the killer by the media, Fubuki resolved to become a journalist to expose the corruption herself. She actually nearly lost her will to live after the incident with Akuma and became inactive until she gave birth to Yuni. It was Yuni's birth that reinvigorated her strength stronger than ever and gave her more reason to rid the world of corruption so future generations could live in harmony.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
