    Author's Commentary #497:

Time to talk about Chapter 497: Fuck you, Ginji.
Poetic is the theme of the day here. Ginji was a complete asshole through and through, and finally got what was coming to him for all that he did. Not to mention, this chapter was uploaded on Escape:Witch's 2-year anniversary. While Ginji might not be a big antagonist there, his daughter, Kaori, certainly is. But before that, I first want to mention that all the Author's Commentaries for the chapters added in during the revisions have been posted, thus all the commentaries are up to date. Now back to the chapter.

Originally, I did plan to have this be longer, but both due to burnout and feeling like this game was fitting for an asshole Ginji, this is what we got. To elaborate more on the latter point, I felt it was kind of poetic that Ginji would play like he's been playing all tournament at the precise moment he didn't want to. Then he got beaten up, further diminishing his thinking skills before he was mated and fell face-first onto the board. This serves as a parallel to the Mimoko game back in Chapter 62: Turning point. And speaking of parallels, Ginji, who hit someone from behind gets bruised an battered from blows to his front. And speaking of the bastard, he represents the sin of vainglory.

You might have forgotten about this with how long the season is, but every season's main villain embodies one of the seven deadly sins, with Ginji's being vainglory. I guess it's more like 9 sins though since vainglory and melancholy are included. That just leaves 2 sins left, greed and gluttony, but by no means does this mean there's only two seasons left. The end of Season 7 will mark the end of saga 2 of the series though, but mainly due to it's length.

Speaking of which, Okisato isn't done just yet either. He might have beaten Ginji, but if Japan wants a shot at a medal, he needs to beat Nándor. That game was not rushed, and is also one of my favorites, mainly due to Nándor. I hope you're looking forward to seeing just why Nándor is likely to be one of my favorite characters in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #495:

Time to talk about Chapter 495: Iori, the witch, and the Viih-Sou.
I'm sure this title will bring callbacks to the Meadow Hay Mistake as well as the story surrounding American Grandmaster, Brandon Jacobson. This time it's pure Viih-Sou as Iori's playing as Black, and there isn't an official name for the opening she played. Thus, hence forth, 1. e4 a5 2. Nc3 Ra6 will be known as the Viih-Sou/Jacobson Gambit.

Iori vs Agatha was a clash I had planned, but believe it or not, my burnout and desire to finish the season as fast as possible put it on the verge of getting scrapped. Luckily, I powered through and we got this amazing game.

As mentioned in a previous commentary, Iori was originally going to break out of prison and arrive just in time to face Agatha. However, I didn't want to write that, which is why I had Raymond prevent her arrest in the first place. I feel this worked out better narratively as now I don't need to divert attention away too much.

One final thing I'll touch on is Mimoko's attitude towards Iori. While she's not condoning all the killing she's done, she feels that after what she did to Kotora, she has no right to claim any moral high ground. In fact, that actually brings the two closer ironically enough. Iori's past being exposed will eventually have some noticeable repercussions later down the line though in future arcs of the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #494:

Time to talk about Chapter 494: Vanity queen.
And now, we're at the final round of the tournament. The men are taking on Hungary while the women get America. This means Mimoko can properly face off against Kuon. Now lets do the bios for the new characters.

ラウル・カサブランカ (Raúl Casablanca) is how Raúl's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is November 19th, which he shares with Cuban chess master and 3rd World Chess Champion, José Raúl Capablanca.

His favorite piece is the bishop.

While this match is important to the series, I will confirm outright it will be offscreened. My apologies if this disappoints you. I will confirm though that Casablanca is a DSPCM.

モーティ・シャーカ (Morty Szarka) is how Morty's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is March 29th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the pawn.

ナンドール・ニーストール (Nándor Nyisztor) is how Nándor's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is March 27th, which is the day What We Do in the Shadows first began airing.

His favorite piece is the king.

Nándor is easily one of the surprise favorites of the bunch. He's a crazy chuuni with wizard powers, and that alone makes him fun to write. I'll have more to say on him in future commentaries.

ペタル・ラントス (Petar Lantos) is how Petar's name would be spelled int katakana.

His birthday is September 8th, which he shares with Hungarian grandmaster and chess commentator, Peter Leko.

His favorite piece is the bishop.

アコス・オルシャーグ (Ákos Országh) is how Ákos' name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is August 29th, which he shares with Hungarian grandmaster, Zoltán Almási.

His favorite piece is the king.

Originally, I had no idea who the men's final round opponent would be as the Ginji fight looked to be the big finale to their saga. Russia was originally considered to be it, but after Rasputin's introduction, I slotted them to round 8. Hungary made a bit of sense for me because they are the host nation. In the IRL chess Olympiads, the host nation will always play at table 2 regardless of how well they're doing.

America was obviously planned from the start to be the final opponent for the women as with the final round of the tournament comes the permissible use of DESPERs. Since Nyoan has been set free, Kuon can now use her to drag Mimoko into a DESPER match.

Speaking of which, I'll just come out and confirm that the Mimoko-Kuon game will be an extension of the Daria-Xiao Lin game from round 6. I'll explain more on why when we reach that point in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:494

    Author's Commentary #493:

Time to talk about Chapter 493: Iori Ishikiridokoro vs Interpol.
Oh boy, this one's actually a bit controversial considering it's based off of something that actually happened. To give some background, back in October 2024, the US Chess Championships were held in St. Louis. There, one of the participants, Christopher Yoo, ended up punching a female videographer from behind following his loss to Fabiano Caruana. Yoo was then charged with fourth-degree assault and arrested, subsequently receiving a one-year ban from the US Chess Federation.

First the mercury poisoning, now this. Ginji always seems to be involved with this kind of stuff. And worse, he's doing this all to hurt Okisato and prevent him from winning. As for Barrdhubh, she actually was first introduced in a deleted Pre 6B chapter, thus making this her new official debut. As such, I'll do her bio. I also didn't do Bella's either, so I'll rectify that now.

バルドゥフ・アイゼンアワー (Barrdhubh Isenhour) is how Brrdhubh's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is July 19th, which she shares with Georgian-born Scottish grandmaster, Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant.

Her favorite piece is the knight.

ベラ・ブルー (Bella Bleu) is how Bella's name would be spelled in katakana.

Her birthday is October 15th, which she shares with French grandmaster, Marie Sebag.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

I will confirm Barrdhubh will survive this, but that still won't do much to get team Japan out of their predicament. As for Iori, I originally planned for her to be arrested and have to break out of prison to get to the next round in time, but obviously, I opted against it to get the season finished. I also planned to go more in depth on her backstory, but decided against it due to burnout. Perhaps a future arc will better delve into her psych and past, but for now, I decided to just include a brief glimpse at it in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:493

    Author's Commentary #492:

Time to talk about Chapter 492: Out of the dunes.
The game has finally concluded, and what a game it was. 72 moves starting with the Japanese Opening, which stems from the Anderssen Opening, and Okisato Tanabe has finally beaten Peter Morphy. It's easy to see why I said this game was so important.

Obviously, this face-off was planned even before the Chess Olympics was a thing. Back then, the arc was still a tournament, but it was more of a world championship style one with an elimination bracket. Characters like Hubert were planned to appear there, but the main points would be Okisato beating Peter in the semifinals, but losing to Mimoko in the finals. That would have been the then-penultimate arc, but then I got inspired to do the Chess Olympics, and now have many more ideas for arcs beyond it, not to mention 600 more characters than before to work with.

Getting back to the game, I actually had a game I played out back in 2024 or maybe early 2025 for this face-off, but since I couldn't find it, I had to replay Chess.com's 3200-rated level 25 maximum engine bot until I found something I was satisfied with. This 72-move game was that. I was naturally intimidated by it's length, but quickly got into the groove of writing it.

When I thought about the imagery of Okisato being in a hot desert, that's when things really began turning. The whole second half of the game became a thematic masterpiece, and one of the most daunting challenges before me was done before I knew it.

One final thing of note is that originally, Japan was going to draw the match despite Okisato and the masked man's victories. I decided against this mainly because it would leave a sour taste if Zago botched it. Now round 10 is finished, and things are almost over. Just one more round to go and the Chess Olympics will be over. After that, it's just a few more chapters and we will finally be done with the longest arc ever in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
