    Author's Commentary #9:

Time to talk about Chapter 9: Psychopath.
First off, Cypress. He's dead. And that's it...
In all honesty, Cypress' whole point was to be a throwaway villain. This is why I had no problem making him as scummy as he is.

His name could be written as ă‚·ăƒ—ăƒŹă‚čăƒ»ă‚·ă‚«ăƒąă‚ą (Cypress Sycamore) in katakana.

His birthday is January 13th and his favorite piece is the king. Originally, his birthday was March 7th, but after learning that March 7th is the birthday of Alexandre Deschapelles, whom was regarded as one of the greatest chess players of the early 19th century, I decided to change it. The reason being that I felt Cypress wasn't deserving of sharing his birthday with one of the greatest chess players of his era and because I've decided to base a future character off of Dechapelles, so naturally I want this character to have the March 7th birthday. Cypress' new birthday was chosen at random. I wouldn't be surprised if many of the random birthdays I chose for some of the characters are also the birthdays of famous chess players, however, I likely won't change anymore birthdays.

To elaborate a bit more on why Cypress dislikes women so much, he's encountered his fair share of crafty women which is why he's always wary of them. This eventually led to him hating women, and seeking to make their lives miserable. In short, he's the kind that would discriminate against women, but never underestimate them. Of course, that doesn't mean women still can't outwit him, which is exactly what happened here.

Now we'll discuss both the game, and the big twist of the chapter. Iori is an ex-murderer. She became addicted to the thrill of killing without getting caught at a young age, and ended up murdering thousands both for personal pleasure and monetary support. This led her to develop a high intellect, which she usually hides behind a foolish persona. Not once has she ever been caught, nor do the authorities suspect her, which highlights her terrifying talent. However, one day, she stopped killing and swore to herself to never kill again.

To go back to Iori's character bio, her true persona is why her birthday is April 1st. There are also some hints in her name that allude to her true nature as a killer. Mainly her last name, çŸłćˆ‡æ‰€, which contains the kanji for "cut"/"slice" which is certainly something Iori did a lot of when murdering people.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

As for the game, it was, you guessed it, another me vs the chess.com bots original. I decided to theme the chapter around this game after realizing it had all the necessary qualities to make Iori's big reveal all the more thematic.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #30:

Time to talk about Chapter 30: The calm before the storm.
Seems like the storm is about to hit. Not only are things starting to get heated on Madoka's end, but Serika is also facing a whirlwind of emotions due to the two big revelations she's been hit with.

One big change from the original is Fujiko's death. In the first release of the original, I had Nadea disguise as Madoka and kill Fujiko off screen. In the updated release, I had Fujiko fake her death. Here, I finally feel I got the plot-point down pat. There were actually a few reasons why the police didn't try to arrest Madoka earlier. First, Yumeko didn't properly report Fujiko's death until a few days after, or rather, her corrupt friends within the police didn't take action immediately. The second, and bigger reason was the Ginkawa mansion. The mansion is a fortress and technically counts as it's own city state. Thus, the only way for the police to even gain access to the mansion is if someone from the Ginkawa family lets them in. After striking a deal with the twins, Oribia and Orise, Purin was able to gain a pathway to the mansion. However, there was actually a third reason why she waited until now to launch her attack. That reason will be made apparent in the next chapter.

As previously mentioned, this next arc will be the final arc of season 1. It will also center around Serika so expect some big moments from her.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #37:

Time to talk about Chapter 37: The Madagascar incident.
There truly is a lot to talk about this chapter. First off, the history of this chapter itself. Believe it or not, this chapter was actually one of the earliest ideas I had for a story line in the series. Obviously, there were some major differences like Rebelle and Cyril, the lemur, not being present. Masaru was also originally going to be present and the one to do the cook-off against the poachers, however, Rika getting attacked by the poachers and killing them was still present in the original draft.

As for Cyril, he's Rebelle's pet lemur she got as a gift from her mentor shortly after she left Britain. He's highly trained and one of the big reasons Rebelle has so much blackmail material. ă‚·ăƒȘル is how his name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is October 30th. The reason I chose this is because it is a day that World lemur day could be celebrated on. Since the day is celebrated on the last Friday of October, I decided to choose this date to be his birthday.

While this will likely be Cyril's only major appearance in the story, I might end up doing something with his character in a different novel.

In the original Spice of life, this chapter was more of a minor chapter, but here, I decided to make it more important, mainly via the inclusion of Hinari Nozomi. First off Hinari's bio.

陜愛 望 (Nozomi Hinari) is how her name is spelled in kanji. 陜愛 means "positive" and "to love" while 望 means "hope".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is July 28th which is world nature conservation day.

    Her favorite food is rice.

In the original, Hinari also ended up being killed by Rika, but the circumstances were much different. There, Hinari was suicidal and was preparing to hang herself when Rika stopped by her place. Since she hated Rika for flirting with Masaru, a member of the Makihara faction, she attempted to kill Rika, but ended up getting accidentally kicked into the noose by Rika and hung to death as a result.

Since I was going to submit Spice of life to a contest, I felt that chapter was too dark and decided to rewrite Hinari's role in the story. It ended up working out much better in the end as rewriting Hinari's role in the story not only allowed me to not have Rika infiltrate the remedial course disguised as a student, but also make the Madagascar chapter more of a major plot point in the story.

Speaking of Rika, the time has finally come to reveal her favorite food, and as stated in the chapter, her favorite food is snakes. Due to her assassin training, she was often fed various venomous animals in order to build up immunity. As a result, she ended up developing the 3rd highest poison resistance amongst her family as well as a genuine appetite for snake meat. Snakes are actually on the menu at Ryokoma, but naturally they're the of the safe-to-eat variety. Of the snakes on the menu, rattlesnakes are by far Rika's favorite meal.

While the hyped up Madagascar chapter has finally been released, this arc is still far from over. In fact, there's still a few chapters left before the catering gig begins. I hope you look forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
