Why are you letting yourself be drug around by some clearly unstable child!
Also, why are you saying that "The reason isn't something given to you. It's something you make." when you're whole justification for following Ame is: "Because he's the first person who let me follow him."
Don't you realize that you're letting Ame come up with your reason for you? You're not thinking for yourself, my dude! You're letting Ame do all the thinking!

It’s almost like Nell’s development has been stunted because of his only friends being unstable people.

Also, the problem isn't that he can't think of anything to do: it's about how anything he could do (including making the world better) would be a self-imposed goal that has no meaning beyond what he gives it.
It would be like buying yourself a " surprise present:" even if you go through all the steps of wrapping it up, hiding it away, and then giving it to yourself, at the end of the day, it has no meaning or intention beyond what you did. It's like talking to yourself.
