Oh wow, you really caught me off guard there... twice! xD

I actually just wanted to portray Marchtain as an unshakable soldier who doesn’t lose his composure easily and always draws the right conclusions.
Because of that, he automatically assumed that they came from another world when he saw them jumping out of the portal.
But maybe that was a bit too much of a stretch…

And yes, you’re absolutely right! As you can probably tell from the release dates of the chapters, the original order was completely different... it actually started right with their escape into the new world, and the whole part with Dionysus was told piece by piece through flashbacks.

But I felt that the reader first needed to build a connection and emotional bond with Melissa and Lucius, so their adventure in the new world would have more impact... that’s why I changed it.

Whoa… what an aftermath!

Amazing writing as always <3

From the very first scene with Barkel and Hanel barely standing, I could feel how much everyone’s been through.

That they couldn’t protect all the children is a real downer here, it makes the overall mood feel rather depressing.

But in this way, you portrayed perfectly that this wasn’t a glorious victory at all, just a hard-won survival.

The whole chapter feels like the calm after a storm, everything still muddled up, until slowly the tension rises again when Kade is revealed to be unresponsive.

I absolutely loved how Velis was the only one who could reach him. That moment felt so powerful and quiet at the same time.

I’m still quite shocked though, what the heck happened to him??

After the last chapter, I actually expected Kade to have gotten things straightened out with himself, but instead the opposite seems to be the case!

That last line was especially haunting.

Maybe he’s just afraid that he betrayed his newfound family somehow, because he isn’t the person they thought he was?

Guess I should check out the next chapter asap :D

The fawn girl was actually meant to be Melissa’s inner child, 'waiting for someone who won’t leave after the dance', though the “future daughter” theory is wild enough that I might pretend I planned it all along :>

I’m so glad the emotion and chaos of this chapter hit the way I hoped!

I really wanted Melissa’s transformation to feel epic... I even rewatched the scene where Goku first goes Super Saiyan for inspiration 😅 (a bit cringing to admit lol)

Though I wanted it a little more unexpected in tone.

So hearing that it gave you chills made me ridiculously happy!

It was also important to me that Melissa wasn’t a damsel in distress.

From early on, she’s been carving her own path, and somewhere along the way, she kinda became the true mc. xD

Lucius still matters deeply, of course, but they’re walking very different roads now. Whether those roads ever meet again… we’ll see. :P

Anyway I’m thrilled you noticed all the details so thanks again for always reading so deeply and feeling every moment.

I’m really glad the contrast between Lucius’s divine encounter and Melissa’s brutal reality came through the way it did.

Btw it honestly made me smile that you mentioned Lovecraft! I’ve devoured his stories and he’s been a huge influence on how I write atmosphere and dread. :3

Funny little detail:

this chapter was one of the last I completely reworked before the deadline, and that final line about the fried cheese skewers was actually a late addition.

So it makes me extra happy that it stood out to you and gave the moment the touch of humanity I felt it lacked before.

Ehh don’t worry about the Eurnar/Nira/Mai scene! After rereading it, it actually clicks really nicely, especially now knowing what it was hinting at :)

The subtle confusion totally fits Kade’s mental state, so I think it works just fine 👍

The way you built up Kade’s arc... all the pain, longing, and eventual “rebirth” just hits so deep. I can really feel how much love and effort you put into writing it.
