So I really did try to drip feed as much as possible to avoid any lore dumps, but maybe I went too far here.
The village is huts, farm fields, and a watchtower. But some of the huts house advanced machines that synthesize food, clothing, and medicine.
Sprout has never met a human, but Oliver has. He’s from “the city” and moved to the village to get away from human society. Sprout is the opposite. She loathes living in the village and wants to move to the city.
Everything above is, I believe, stated in chapter 1.
The incel and BFCT lines are there to help show that she has some access to human communications. They don’t have reliable internet access, but they get new data when Oliver makes supply runs to the city.
The city, in this case, is the Frderation capital. They were genetically engineered by the Federation and sent to reclaim the toxic wastelands. The federation built the village, and a Federation employee who likes Shin Sekai Yori too much is responsible for Dvorak at sunset.
So it’s not so much that they just kill humans. They—at least the main four—have a sense of shared nationality with some humans. They’re killing those who might be their enemies.
As for the nuke, only Sprout, Oliver, and Lea knew what it was. Oliver, because he was raised in the city and educated. Sprout because she spends her free time reading through the data archives and wishing she were anywhere else. Lea’s reason has yet to be revealed.
