    Author's Commentary #87:

Time to talk about Chapter 87: Underdogs.
Quite a lot happened in this chapter. First off, Hagemi has now been kidnapped by Kuon, while Xiao Lin has fled. Obviously, both of these events will lead to future plot points in the story so look forward to that. The other major event was the 4-player chess match.

Since the brainwashed SPCMs have now all lost, Mimoko can challenge Ai. This also means that there won't be anymore 4-player chess matches for a while. Speaking of the game, it was enjoyable to write. Some of them would even make my top 10 favorite games in the series list. Speaking of which, I'll be doing such a list once Season 4 concludes.

Another thing that was revealed in the chapter was Doraaki's backstory. I still honestly don't know what I'm going to do with her character going forward, but at least she now has a backstory that gives her character more depth. I'll also confirm that during the match, there were parts where her brainwashing was slightly undone, though mainly because the arc's main villain just wanted her to suffer.

One final thing I'll talk about is the ending. First off, Nyoan actually did kidnap Kotora and now he'll be trapped in a paw during Mimoko's bout with Ai. Nyoan won't be sticking around for the match though, so this chapter does mark her final appearance in Season 3. She will definitely return though.

Second, and most importantly, the big reveal of the arc; Ai is not a WWCF member meaning she doesn't truly have a rating. This is why I listed her rating as ???? in her character bio so as not to spoil the surprise. If she did have a rating though, it would likely be 2700. Ai truly is skilled, however, she was deliberately prevented from becoming a WWCF member in order to pull off the false maestro scheme. Next chapter, Mimoko faces off against Ai. I hope you look forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #73:

Time to talk about Chapter 73: The fallen maestro.
The title drop has finally happened! Not to mention, both Maestro Himitsu and Maestro Xiao Lin have fallen. Obviously, naming the saga "The fallen maestros" would have been a bit spoilery, but nonetheless, two of the 7 maestros have fallen.
Xiao Lin fell to the dark side the moment she decided to agree to Ai's plan, but her throwing a high-stakes game in order to proceed with the malicious plan truly goes to show how far she has fallen. While she is now completely hairless for the rest of her life as punishment for losing the match, she could care less, and will only fall further now that she's going to join the Desperado league and get a DESPER.

One final thing I'll talk about is the Ultima-master. This marks the first proper appearance of the Ultima-master in the story, however, it is not fully shown. All that is shown of it is it's glowing red eye.

Speaking of which, if you look closely at the O in all iterations of the Desperado league collage art, you'll notice the O is actually a glowing red eye. In other words, the Ultima-master has been in the artwork this whole time.

Since the artwork has been updated to cover everything up to the end of Season 2, I'll explain the meaning behind the updated portraits. Nyoan's is obvious as she's now bald and wearing a wool-knit hat to cover her head and ears. Kazuya's represents the school roof which was where the big battle against him took place. Finally, Tsar Grigori gets full artwork like Peter to symbolize that like Peter, he's a league member without a DESPER. However, since he makes use of Svetlana, who does have a DESPER, and has sinister ambitions, he stands on the opposite side of Peter.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #66:

Time to talk about Chapter 66: A hellbound piece of shit.
Haruki Kamoshida, aka the piece of shit, is dead. While it would have been better to have him suffer for a bit longer, Okisato didn't want to take any chances after what happened with Kazuya.

Though I'm sure you're wondering, why would Okisato want to kill off the piece of shit so quickly? The answer to that lies in the chapter.

One thing I will clarify is that Tsar Grigori was the one to order Svetlana to eliminate the piece of shit, however, should she fail to do so due to the Desperado by-laws preventing her from doing so, Red Reaper would step in and do the deed, as he seems to be unaffected by them. Tsar Grigori's reason for wanting to eliminate the piece of shit was simply he failed, and it was not worth the effort to try and salvage him. Tsar Grigori is now also aware of Iori's true nature, which will only make things more difficult for the chess club going forward.

Finally, let's discuss what sin the piece of shit, Haruki Kamoshida, embodied. The answer is lust. Initially, I thought pride was the sin he most embodied, due to the fact that he takes pride in harassing people and ruining lives. He'll happily beat you up, then tell you he did something horrible to someone close to you. Thus, I believed the sin of pride is what he most embodied. However, after thinking about it more, I feel lust better describes his motives as his main goal is to have sex with Svetlana. Thus, I decided that the sin he embodies most is lust. Fitting considering both the characters he takes inspiration from are associated with the sin of lust.

And with that, only one chapter remains of Season 2 before Season 3 begins. I hope you look forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #65:

The time has finally come to talk about Chapter 65: 9 queen flex.
First off, this chapter was actually the idea that spawned the entire chess boxing arc. I really wanted to have a chapter where Okisato wrecks someone in both disciplines and mates with 9 queens.

However, if you saw the move list I provided, you'll know that this game was 73 moves long. As such, I opted not to write out the entire game, because I felt doing so would bog down the chapter.

Now onto the beatdown. I essentially wanted to make this the 7-page muda of the series. If you read my previous commentaries, you'll know that the piece of shit and Okisato were based off of Ryuuen and Ayanokoji from Classroom of the elite, respectively. As such, it could be expected that I'd have a beatdown chapter inspired by the Ayanokoji vs Ryuuen fight.

Though as I was formulating the idea for the arc, I realized that while the beatdown was epic, it felt like the piece of shit was getting a harsher punishment than he deserved, since all his character was at the time, was an edgier Ryuuen. So naturally I remedied that by making the piece of shit the most hateable and despicable character in the series. In otherwords, now he deserved every ounce of pain, suffering, and humiliation he got from this beatdown.

And with that, the chess club has won the bout, both Mimoko and Yuzuha are healed, and the piece of shit is permanently out of commission. However, there are still two more chapters left before Season 2 ends, so look forward to those.

One final thing I'll say is that what ultimately saved Mimoko was the fact that Okisato was making so many bad moves. That alone reignited her will and strength to live and reprimand Okisato for his actions. Had a stalemate occurred though, Okisato simply would have KO'd the piece of shit in the final round, and thus won. However, Iori speed-running her fight truly gave Okisato all the time he needed to give the piece of shit his dues. Had Iori's match taken longer, Okisato would have just one-shot the piece of shit in order to save Mimoko. Luckily, Iori came in clutch, and we got an epic beatdown chapter because of that.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #25:

Time to discuss Chapter 25: Lagoon pathways hotel.
First up, the hotel itself. It actually draws inspiration from a hotel I once went to that featured an intricate waterfall and waterways running throughout the main room. Of course, the waterways weren't big enough to ride boats in them and were more for looking at. Thus, I decided to make Lagoon pathways far more ambient to that of a nighttime lagoon, and also have it so that the canals could be ridden in by boat.

Now onto the new chess club members, Rodeo Gorou and Yuzuha Zenihara. Both of these characters aren't going to have much of an impact on this arc. The only reason I introduced them here was so that they could get ratings upon completing the tournament.

As stated in the chapter, Rodeo likes rooks while Yuzuha likes knights. Rodeo likes rooks due to his belief that they're strong and tough like him. Yuzuha likes knights simply because they are horses and horses are her favorite animal.

伍楼 路出男 (Gorou Rodeo) is how Rodeo's name is spelled in kanji. 路出男 can translate to "large", "exit", and "man". His last name, 伍楼 translates to "five" and "tower", which is fitting considering Rodeo's a large young man and has an affinity for rooks. Though ironically, rooks are actually one of the shortest pieces on the board.

銭原 友珠羽 (Zenihara Yuzuha) is how Yuzuha's name is spelled in kanji. 友珠羽 can translate to "friend", "pearl", and "wing". 銭原 translates to "money" and "origin".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Rodeo's birthday is February 23rd. The reason for that is that it's the day Rodeo day was this year. Rodeo day is always the last Friday in February.

Yuzuha's birthday is September 9th. The reason for this is because September 9th is apparently the most common birthday in the world.

One other thing I'll mention is that this chapter has been revised numerous times, mainly to include antagonists that will become more relevant later. As such, I'll be holding off on giving their bios until they become more relevant in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
