    Author's Commentary #18:

Time to talk about Chapter 18: Ides of March Part 3.
We have our first yuri kiss of the series! Things are finally starting to look up. If this ever gets an anime, you can bet the Fairy Tail "Wow" sound effect will play as soon as the goons notice Madoka.

Funnily enough, this chapter actually underwent the least amount of changes between it and the original. The first notable change is that instead of having the middle part of the chapter be told as a flashback, I had it occur immediately when it was meant to. This also confirms that all the stuff with Madoka, Emeri, and Serika, took place before Fujiko was about to pour the wax on Yuni.

Speaking of Yuni, her hair is safe for the moment, and Madoka is coming to save the day. The outfits Madoka and Emeri wear are also their stage outfits they wear when Madoka films her magic videos. Prior to her face reveal, Emeri simply wore a motorcycle helmet, but now that she's done a face reveal, she's now sporting a white witch hat in reference to the fact that white hats are considered good hackers.

The only other notable change is that Bianka now arrests Carl instead of Mutsumi. I did this for a few reasons. The first was so that Mutsumi could accompany Serika to make sure she's safe, and the second was to show that Bianka's back in the game. She might still be bald, but at least her hair will grow back.

Speaking of bald, I will confirm that in the next chapter, someone WILL end up completely bald. The next chapter will also be the climax of the Ides of March arc so I hope you look forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #25:

Time to talk about Chapter 25: Benihime's motivation.
Finally, some more insight has been given into Benihime's character. Originally, I had an entire story arc planned around her, but it never came to fruition in the original. The remake however will include the arc, but it won't be until well into Season 2 when it starts. Now let's talk more about Benihime.

白姫 紅姫 (Shirohime Benihime) is how her name is spelled in kanji. Her first name, 紅姫, means "crimson" and "noblewoman" while 白姫 means "white" and "princess". A large inspiration for her character was Constance von Nuvelle from Fire Emblem Three houses.

Her birthday is June 21st, which is national wagyu day. This is fitting since wagyu is her favorite meal.

Now Zuina is the only Ryokoma staff member shrouded in mystery. While I won't divulge much on her backstory, I will give some basic facts regarding her.

Her full name is Zuina Morsten Adler and she was born to a British father and Japanese mother.
ズイナ・モーステン・アドラー (Zuina Morsten Adler) is how her full name would be spelled in Japanese. She actually was given a name with kanji by her mother and chose to adopt that name once she moved from England to Japan with her sister.
アドラー 瑞菜 (Adler Zuina) is how her name is spelled with her first name in kanji. 瑞菜 means "fortune" and "vegetable" which is fitting since she was raised on a British farm.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me.

Her birthday is October 25th which is national pasta day. However, her favorite food is breadsticks, mainly due to how simplistic they are. National breadstick day is a thing, however, the date is always on the last Friday of October. Since National breadstick day falls on October 25th this year, I decided to make the date Zuina's birthday. Not to mention, breadsticks also go great with pasta.

One other thing I'll mention about Zuina is that she largely adheres to an octo-lavo vegetarian diet. The only meat she eats is from bivalves, mainly because she doesn't really feel guilty about eating them and considers them to be edible seashells. Thus, she could be considered more of a pescetarian. Despite her diet though, she has no issue with people that eat meat or cooking meat-based meals. While she hasn't had much of a role in the story thus far, I promise she will once the next major arc rolls around.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #17:

Time to talk about Chapter 17: Ides of March Part 2.
Whelp, things just went from bad to worse. Now Serika and Emeri have both been kidnapped. Serika's also on the verge of drowning while Emeri's already lost all her fingernails on her left hand. The only hope is for Madoka to save everyone.

Now before I talk about some behind the scenes trivia regarding this chapter, I first want to bring attention to the cover art of the novel. As stated in the description for the image, each picture is a reference to a scene in the story. Yuni and Madoka are referencing the unbeatable escape room arc, Emeri is referencing Jester's explosive crepe factory, and Serika is referencing the Ides of March arc. Now for some interesting trivia regarding the initial drafts for this arc.

As I mentioned in previous commentaries, this arc was originally going to be Emeri's debut. As such, she would end up getting kidnapped by the goons at a convenience store and taken to the hotel. Serika still would have got kidnapped, but instead of encountering Emeri on her way to work, she'd have encountered Madoka.

Madoka and Serika would argue with each other until Madoka would notice Emeri tied up in a car passing by. Serika would then chase after it and get kidnapped, while Madoka hid in an alley. Then Madoka would simply follow the goons to the hotel.

Once I decided that Emeri would be introduced earlier in the story, I then had to find some way to keep Madoka out of the picture for a bit. And as shown in the story, the idea I came up with was having her be arrested and confined in a maximum security holding cell. This was why she ended up kicking Mochi in the face as that would give the police grounds to arrest her. Funnily enough, I actually had a maximum holding cell escape arc planned in the outlining phase of the story, but the full arc never came to fruition. I did salvage the idea though as shown in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #16:

Time to talk about Chapter 16: Ides of March Part 1.
If you thought the cliffhanger at the end of the last chapter was bad, this one is even worse. Now Yuni's down her eyebrows and her hair and mind are in terrible shape. Yuni only managed to regain her strength and mount a counterattack thanks to remembering her mother, Fubuki, but even that wasn't enough.

You might have noticed that time went by rather quickly this chapter. That is because this arc will feature events taking place simultaneously from one another. This chapter focused solely on Yuni, while the next chapter will focus on Emeri.

Originally, this arc was much less dark, but still saw Yuni getting kidnapped by Fujiko and dragged to the salon. Back then, she was simply going to be chloroformed upon returning home, and wake up in the salon. To make matters worse for Yuni, Kurobane was even going to mandate she go to the salon to have Fujiko shave all her hair off as a sign of repentance for Bianka attacking Fujiko. To give some context, Bianka was originally going to come to the museum with Yuni and co, and leave to go after Fujiko. Mochi then would have blamed Yuni for giving the "order" to Bianka to leave, which would cause Kurobane to ultimately blame her for the incident and order her to get a makeover from Fujiko as punishment.

One final thing I'll talk about is what Fujiko's theme song would be. It would likely be a menacing and slowed-down remix of Rossini's The Barber of Seville Overture. As for why, first I like classical music, second, I feel a menacing remix of Barber of Seville would fit Fujiko's character well considering she's an evil hair stylist. Perhaps the track would even be titled something like "Bald fetishist of Seville". However, if this novel ever were to get an anime adaptation, there would be a scene where the original Barber of Seville overture would be used as a soundtrack. As for what that scene is, I'll reveal that once it appears in the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #23:

Time to talk about Chapter 23: A conspiracy in the shadows.
There is a lot to discuss in this chapter. We'll start off by discussing the officers from the raiding force.

As mentioned in the previous commentary, Makoto, Inoka, Purin, and Yumeko are all from Escape Witch. Since Spice of life chronologically takes place 7 years before Escape Witch, this will offer some glimpses at how some of these characters were before Escape Witch. Most notably though is the fact that Makoto's surname is not yet Kurobane, and the fact that Yumeko has a different hairstyle. Inoka, aka Kaori, is also just as kooky as ever. As for Purin, I'll talk about her more when she reappears in the story.

Now onto Izuhana, the bounty hunter duo made up of Izumi Izuki and Hanabi Natsumi. In the original, Hanabi had yet to meet Izumi when she appeared at the banquet, but for the remake, I decided to have the two already be a team when they debuted, mainly because the story just flowed better that way.

Originally, the two were going to be Escape Witch characters, but after I struggled with trying to give them a definitive role in that story, I relegated them to just having a cameo. Here however, the duo has a much larger stage to shine on.

夏見 花日 (Natsumi Hanabi) is how Hanabi's name is written in kanji. Her first name, 花日, means "flower" and "sun", while 夏見 means "Summer" and "to see".

泉貴 和 (Izuki Izumi) is how Izumi's name would be written in kanji. Her first name, 和, means "harmony" while 泉貴 means "fountain" and "valuable".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me.)

I don't want to reveal what their favorite meals are just yet, so instead I'll discuss a bit more on the inspiration behind the duo. Both are based off of characters from Akuma no Riddle with Hanabi being based off of Haruki Sagae and Izumi being based off of Isuke Inukai. The reason for this was simply because I was watching Akuma no Riddle around the time I began doing drafts for Escape Witch, so it was fresh in my mind.

Izumi's birthday is June 29th, which she shares with Isuke Inukai from Akuma no Riddle.

Hanabi's birthday is December 24th which she shares with Haruki Sagae from Akuma no Riddle. The date is also Christmas eve.

As for the ending of the chapter, all I'll say is that it showcases how corrupt Makoto and Yumeko are.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #15:

Time to talk about Chapter 15: Beware the Ides of March.
This is the prelude to the 3rd major arc of the series, The Ides of March arc. Funnily enough, the idea for this arc came about simply because I though "Ides of March" would make for an epic arc title. As such, this also impacted the time period the story took place as I wanted the Ides of March arc to take place on the Ides of March in universe.

Originally, the story was going to start on March 13th instead of the 12th, but after I decided to introduce Emeri earlier, I decided to move the start date of the story to the 12th so I could fit the Unbeatable escape room arc, Emeri's introduction, and the Museum of mummies arc in before Ides of March.

Speaking of Emeri, this was originally going to be where she'd be introduced to the story. The original idea was that Mochi would surrender her phone voluntarily, however, the station's resident hacker would have been unable to recover the video. Madoka then would have taken Yuni to Emeri's place where Emeri would have been introduced as Rolly Polly.

Originally, Emeri's introduction would have seen her disguising herself with layers of clothes to the point that at a glance, people would assume she's a fat man. Madoka would have still known Emeri prior, but wouldn't know that Emeri was a hacker, nor that she was actually Rolly Polly. All she would have known was that Emeri had great respect for the hacker named "Rolly Polly".

Once the video had been recovered, Emeri would then shed her disguise and ride to the station on her motorcycle, where she'd get kidnapped after stopping by a convenience store.

As for Yuni and Fujiko, Fujiko actually would have stalked Yuni all the way to Emeri's place and then headed to Yuni's place to lie in wait until revealing herself at midnight. I'll discuss more about the initial drafts for this arc as the arc progresses. For now, let's go back to some points I mentioned last commentary, namely why I felt the need to build up Fujiko as an irredeemable terror.

First off, I wanted to establish Fujiko as a terrifying villain so that it makes the moment where she arrives at Yuni's apartment all the more suspenseful. Second, the incident with Bianka also shined some light on Serika and offered a glimpse into her character. All I'll say is that Serika will also play a major role in this arc.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #22:

Time to talk about Chapter 22: The underworld banquet.
There's a lot to discuss here, mainly all the attendees. Though first, I'd like to touch on one major difference between this and the original. That difference being, Jester is no longer in the chapter. As for why, I needed to narrow down the word count in order to submit this to a contest. He still does appear in the story though, but he won't become a major player until Season 2 of the remake.

Now let's talk about the attendees and first up is Krokow. His name is obviously inspired by the city of Krakow in Poland. As for why, I just like how it sounds. He hails from Canterbury, and is a cannibal. He even ate his own hand after getting hungry, which is why he now has a cybernetic one. The crazy thing is he's even eaten his cybernetic hand a few times and had to get it replaced because of that.

Next up is Chef P. LaFleur. He's actually a homage to Chef Pierre from Cheetos. To give some context, back in 2006, Cheetos ran a Chester Cheetah undercover campaign where Pierre, after losing to baked Cheetos in a cooking contest, steals the Cheetos secret recipe. Since I have fond memories of playing the flash games that were apart of the Chester Cheetah undercover campaign, I decided to pay homage to it by basing a character off the main antagonist of the campaign, Chef Pierre. While many might assume the P in P. LaFleur's name stands for Pierre, it simply is just P. Maybe I'll decide on a proper name later, but as of this commentary, the P simply stands for P.

Now onto the demon queen cult. Originally, these hairless ladies were going to be much darker, but I decided to tone them down in the remake. While the original offers glimpses at how dark the cult was going to be, the main reason I decided to tone them down was simply because I decided not to make them major antagonists.

To give better context, I'll have to talk about Mystery ghost foresight. When I first finalized the concept for the cult, I decided that I'd tell the story of it's origin in Mystery ghost foresight. However, that never came to be, so I decided to rewrite the cult and tone them down a bit. Originally, they were going to be a cult on drug-like lollipops and have a shadow-leader which would pose as a cultist and secretly control the entire cult, including Ruka. However, I decided to abandon that idea and simply make Ruka the leader. I also changed the drugged lollipops to nanomachine lollipops, both because I wanted to make the cult less dark, and because I felt nanomachines were a better and more logical explanation for how Ruka could control her cult like a hive mind.

As for Ruka herself, she was loosely based of of Megumin from Konosuba. She was actually far more chuuni-like before forming the cult.

Now onto the taboo chef himself, Monsieur Mondeau. Ironically, he ended up being the most underdeveloped of all the attendees despite being the head of Noveau Neo. As for why he's the taboo chef, he cooked people as well as cooked other taboo dishes.

As for the banquet itself, it was largely inspired by a story arc from Hareluya II Boy. This is actually where I got the idea to have Noveau Neo request that some chefs have a nude woman serve as a food platter. I won't spoil the arc, but I will say that said arc is really dark.

I would also like to confirm that the two people Rika recruited for the mission were Helga and Dastard. The real Sundae is back at her restaurant completely unaware of what's going on. As such, the Sundae that was arguing with Himawari last chapter, was actually Dastard the whole time. Dastard is a true master of disguise, and was even able to disguise Rika as Helga. As such, the Helga fighting Krokow is actually Rika.

Finally, I would like to point out that the officers that are busting the banquet are actually Escape Witch characters. I'll elaborate a bit more on them once more is revealed about them.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
