Originally, I came up for the idea of Yowie Hunt long before Shiruka was even a thing. It was originally just going to be a massive shitpost series. However, once I made One letter on the fly and introduced Shiruka, I decided to do more with his character and take the original idea of Yowie Hunt and turn it into something bigger. As for why Shiruka was killed, it was to set up the sequels. As hinted in the ending, he'll probably be coming back as a ghost since he still needs to do something mystery related as per his contract.
As for Niles, funnily enough, he was actually the oldest character I thought up. Though he was intended to be a villain in a different series. Before Shiruka came into the picture, I toyed with the idea of Yowie Hunt being an ego project of Niles. The reveal of Yowie Hunt being a show wouldn't have happened in this novel, but it would have been revealed in a different novel originally. Naturally, the introduction of Shiruka changed all that and I rewrote some of the ideas to better center around Shiruka.
Since Shiruka ended up becoming bigger than I initially planned, I actually combined all the Shirkua novels into the Shiruka collection sort of as a director's cut of One letter, Four very bloody sentences, and Yowie Hunt. It's not necessary to read before reading future stories in the Shiruka series if you've already read the original versions of the three aforementioned novels though. The chapters are essentially the same as the originals with some minor additions. There are some additional chapters and content that better give some context to future events in the series, but they aren't strictly necessary to know about before reading future entries in the series.
As for sequel plans, the direct mainline sequel in the Shiruka sensei series, Mystery ghost foresight, is ongoing. Though I do plan to make some shorter works set in the same universe that will take place in between this and Mystery ghost foresight. These will be more similar to One letter and Four very bloody sentences. Though one of the planned works is actually a Season 2 of Yowie Hunt. The editor wants to milk the series, but will have to rely on someone less talented to write it meaning it won't quite be as good as the first season for canonical reasons.
