Author's Commentary #117:

Time to talk about Chapter 117: The restaurant's one year anniversary.
As stated in the previous commentary, this chapter was completely wholesome. After all the drama and turmoil of the previous arc, it's nice for the series to return to wholesome slice-of-life moments.

And naturally, the reveal of the baby was priceless. Poor Masaru's gonna be shell-shocked for a few days though. And in case anyone's wondering, the one year anniversary chapter in the original was actually where the backstory of Ryokoma's founding was told. I naturally had that even occur very early on in the remake, mainly because it made sense to include it earlier. And now, Rika and Masaru can happily dine on their favorite meals, but the story isn't over just yet. There's still a few unresolved plot-points to deal with, not to mention I find myself unintentionally creating new chapters last minute. Maybe this series will last past August, but I still think I'll finish it up before it ends.

Author's Commentary #116:

Time to talk about Chapter 116: A small fight and a tearful reunion.
The fated Yuni and Serika encounter has occurred, and they got in a huge fight. This marks the start of the bad blood between them though ironically enough, they never get into anymore physical altercations after this. The reason for that is whenever they think of the fight, they remember Rika making them do labor as punishment for making a mess. Of course, the two constantly get in shouting matches with each other and as hinted in the chapter, are set to become academic rivals.

As for the ending of the chapter, I was originally planning for it to be part of the next chapter, however, I didn't want this chapter to end on a somber note so I stuck it in here. Masaru is alive and well. Thanks to the Ginkawa's medical technology, he now has a new body that is exactly like how his old one was before he was turned into a cyborg. Creating a clone of his body was easy, but transplanting his consciousness was the hard part. Shiori, Emeri, and Harumi were heavily involved in the project. As for Masaru's cyborg body, it was destroyed after Masaru's consciousness was successfully transferred.

Now, the next chapter will be far more wholesome as the restaurant celebrates it's 1-year anniversary. And now that Masaru's back, things are really looking bright for the cast. And trust me, Masaru's reaction to the news about the baby will be priceless.

I feel the shorter works tend to be weirder. I usually tend not to try too much for the monthly writing challenges, but ironically, this work ended up linking all three works I wrote for monthly writing challenges together.

As such, this could be considered more of a crossover work, as I actually intend for this novel to play a part in my literary universe, which I dub, the Jouzu-verse. Though the two works that were heavily referenced, Boone's bizarre banana bazaar and Iron Wiedergänger are more on the bizarre side, especially Bbbb since that was more of a shitpost. Ironic that it ended up actually being the catalysis for a major event in the Jouzu-verse.

Some of my other stuff is third-person though. I do think the 1st-person works tend to be more unique, but I often find myself preferring to write in third-person, especially for some of the longer works. In terms of style, those do tend to have a similar vein of witty humor found in this novel, though it tends to be more prevalent in my more comedic novels.

Anyway, thanks for reading this novel all the way to the end. I hope you enjoyed it. 😁

Thanks for checking this out. To be honest, sometimes I don't know how I can create so much. I guess it all comes down to when the creative juices are flowing and I'm in the mood to write. Though for some series, I create a backlog so I don't need to worry about much besides minor edits and simply uploading the chapter.

Since this series was short, it ended up getting done quickly. I think I actually spent more time on the cover art than writing this story, though funnily enough, the cover was actually what helped keep me motivated to write this, and even gave me an idea for future works.

Speaking of my works, a majority of them take place in the same universe. The crazy thing about this novel is that it started out as just a joke, but quickly evolved into an integral novel in my literary universe, which I dub, the Jouzu-verse. I won't spoil how it does, but I will say that the cover art is full of references to some of my other novels. I honestly think that's the reason I enjoyed making it so much.

I tend to write a lot of detail in my works. Not sure if it's a flaw for strength, probably a mix of both. As for the first person view point, I tend to like doing stories like that as I feel it really adds personality to the characters.

Here, it's obvious that Cindy is seeking to gain fame and fortune and has decided that sacrificing her hair is the way to go. She didn't half-ass things though and meticulously researched how to garner the most views and put her findings to the test. Whether that all pays off though remains to be seen.

Author's Commentary #115

Time to talk about Chapter 115: After school debriefing.
This was the original first day of school chapter that was present in the original. It was going to be the exact same as before, but due to me deciding to write a chapter on what actually happened on Serika's first day of school, it's been modified.

It still retains nearly everything that was in the original though, but now there's extended scenes of Serika interacting with her friends and Reika. Nonoka probably won't have a large role in the story going forward, but she will be present for small moments like everyone eating together.

As for Frosting and Kyoko, it was originally Pika and Frosting that were the conspirators, but I decided to have Kyoko be the main conspirator due to how much of a bitch she is. And I will confirm she is related to the Takeda family.

Another thing that occurred thanks to the new chapter was Yuni's academic prowess being hyped up. If you read Escape Witch, you'll know that Yuni and Serika have a contentious relationship with each other. And the reason for that originates here in Spice of life. And best of all, it will be revealed in the next chapter. I hope you're looking forward to it.

I definitely like this version better than the original. Though I assume the girl Kazuki met back then was Koemi, but the theorist in me as saying that Takeshi had more than one granddaughter and the girl we see in the flashback is not Koemi, but another potential love interest. I've definitely been watching too many rom-coms. 😆

Author's Commentary #114:

Time to talk about Chapter 114: Serika's first day of school.
This chapter is a remake original, and was actually completed just a few minutes ago. The reason for that is because I hadn't originally planned to write this chapter, and only decided to do so last minute. And honestly, I'm glad I did. Serika's first day at school was never really shown, so I'm glad I got to show it off. Now let's talk a bit about the two new characters that appeared in this chapter.

金田大人 (Kanada Taijin) is how Taijin's name is written in kanji. 大人 means "big" and "person", while 金田 means "gold" and "hunting". Taijin was actually set to originally be the first main antagonist of Escape Witch. In it, he'd be a gangster that would kidnap Madoka and Yuni and imprison them in a warehouse. I ended up scrapping the idea as I favored having the escape room play a bigger part in Yuni and Madoka meeting. Though now I decided to finally put Taijin in something and had him get absolutely destroyed by Serika.

His birthday is June 28th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite food is potato chips.

小早川希叶 (Kobayakawa Nonoka) is how Nonoka's name is spelled in kanji. 希叶 means "hope" and "fulfill", while 小早川 means "small", "fast", and "river".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is June 26th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this day is her birthday.

Her favorite food is melon pan.

Nonoka was actually created for this chapter. I had debated using a character from another series, but since no one else would really work, I decided to just make an original character. As such, she'll be incorporated into some of the future chapters both here and in the Escape Witch remake.

And Volume 2 is over. To be honest, I king of got Talentless Nana vibes from Miyazaki's speech. I definitely think Volume 2 was a bit better than Volume 1 as it helped flesh out the world a bit more. Looks like Volume 3 will be focused around getting a job, though what job remains to be seen.

For early theories, a salary company seems like my top choice, but since it involves pills, maybe it could be a restaurant. Anyway, looking forward to Volume 3.

Author's Commentary #113:

Time to talk about Chapter 113: Reika's bluff.
In case you didn't already hate Zerin, this chapter gives you far more reason to hate her. She really is a corrupt fanatic and easily one of my most hated characters across all my works. Heck, I think she'd easily be in the top 5 for the characters in my works I hate the most. In this series though, she's easily in the top 3 for the most hated characters. But enough about her, let's talk more about Segolina Rouge, now that she's properly appeared in the story.

セゴリーナ・ルージュ (Segolina Rouge) is how her name is spelled in katakana. She is half French and half Japanese. If you've seen Reika's art in the collage in the remake's gallery, her hairstyle is actually similar to that of Segolina's. I've never uploaded any art of Segolina, but that will likely change soon.

Her birthday is July 14th, which is also Bastille day.

Her favorite food is profiterole, aka cream puffs.

Now that Mimi and Matcha are back, things are looking much brighter at Ryokoma. One big thing I wanted to establish in the remake was Rika and Serika's relationship. In Escape Witch, Rika's one of the few people Serika's comfortable asking for life advice. I wanted to establish why she's so trusting of Rika here in the remake, since I didn't really do that in the original.

Author's Commentary #112:

Time to talk about Chapter 112: Serika and Bianka.
Serika's continuing to get adjusted to the outside world. This time, she meets Bianka and Mochi. I won't spoil anything, but I will say this scene hits differently if you've read the Escape Witch remake. Naturally, Escape Witch will have a similar feel if read after reading this. Though for this story, it's nothing but wholesome bonding as Serika gets acquainted with Bianka and Mochi.

As for Reika's mentor, Segolina Rouge, she's actually a character that originated in Mystery ghost foresight. I never fully fleshed out her character though, as I stopped writing Mystery ghost, though considering a rewrite of said novel is looking more and more likely, it's probable her character will properly be fleshed out there.

Author's Commentary #111:

Time to talk about Chapter 111: Serika Midoriya.
This was originally planned to be two separate chapters, but I decided to merge them together. This is easily my favorite arc in the series as it focuses on one of my favorite characters, Serika Midoriya. Serika is indeed the final main protagonist from Escape Witch. If you've kept up with my commentaries, you might have noticed I never did a bio for her. That was because I was waiting for this chapter. So without further ado, here's Serika's bio.

緑谷芹佳 (Midoriya Serika) is how her name is spelled in kanji. Her first name, 芹佳, means "celery" and "beautiful" while 緑谷 means "green" and "valley", which is fitting since Serika has green hair. It's also a reference to Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia. As for her original name, Mao. It was spelled 眞絃 in kanji and means "genuine" and "string".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is August 31st. I actually chose this date at random, so there isn't much significance behind why that's her birthday. Though it is worth mentioning that her birthday is a day before Ruchi Ookuma's.

Her favorite food is takoyaki as revealed in this chapter.

Since Serika is my favorite character, I really enjoyed writing the chapters featuring her. In fact, I dare say the Serika arc is my favorite arc in the entire series, mainly due to how wholesome it is. It was in the original, and I'm happy to say that it retains all the charm it had there and then some. I hope you're looking forward to it. And speaking of which, the remake is slowly approaching it's end. I feel it will end in the latter half of August, with how many chapters there are left. It certainly has been a journey, but the remake is slowly reaching it's end. It's possible I might add in one more new arc, but even then, I still feel it will end in August. It's hard to believe, but the series is almost done. Thanks to everyone that's been reading up to this point, and I hope you're looking forward to seeing how the story ends.

Author's Commentary #110:

Time to talk about Chapter 110: Turning point.
Things are certainly starting to go in Rika's favor. The Takedas have been exposed, Rebelle's starting to panic, and Kyoko got what was coming to her. Now just like Reika said, all that's left to do is get Mao on her feet and continue exposing Ookuma's cronies.

As for why Ookuma even had Rebelle capture all that damning footage in the first place, insurance. She wanted to have leverage over everyone should they decide to betray her. Naturally, only her and Rebelle knew of this. As such, if someone in Illumous were to find out, things could go south for Rebelle quite quickly as she'd easily fall under the most suspicion for Ookuma's disappearance.

Speaking of things looking up, the next few chapters will be some of my favorites in the entire series. As for why, it's because they'll focus on a certain character.
