    Author's Commentary #183:

Time to talk about Chapter 183: The Japanese opening's grand debut.
Once again, a new opening makes it's debut in the series, this time it's the Japanese opening, which stems from the Anderssen opening. There currently aren't any chess openings named after Japan or places in Japan, but I hope that changes especially with this opening.

I've actually put some theory into it, both on the chess side, and on the story side, and in terms of chess viability, it's solid, especially if you play the main line. However, Utami deliberately didn't do that and played the next best move which has been dubbed, the Kyoto variation. The reason for this is because Okisato is seeking to use this opening to finally notch a win off of Peter and doesn't want him figuring out how he's going to play it.

This idea was a spur of the moment type of deal, but I feel it was one of the best ideas yet I've had for the series as it will showcase a unique form of development. For now though, this is probably the last we'll see of the Japanese opening in this side story as Okisato's set to play as black if need be, and none of the others know the opening theory aside from Okisato and Utami.

One other thing I'll mention is that everyone's ratings have increased due to both the events of Seasons 3 and 4, and for participating in a tournament off-screen. Peter was at that tournament which is why he was able to get to Tokyo so quickly. Speaking of Peter, it's been a while since he's last made an appearance. I actually planned to have him appear in Season 3, but had trouble figuring out how to factor him into to story, which led to him not making an appearance there. However, the game he was set to play has been salvaged, and trust me, it's going to be epic.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #137:

Time to talk about Chapter 137: Shadow tactics.
First off, this is going to contain big spoilers for the series, but if you've already read the chapter, you're good. Anyway, Himawari was the secret mastermind all along. This was planned ever since the early stages of the original, but it's taken up until now to finally put it in writing. Though, I guess there were various hints littered throughout the original that Himawari was secretly corrupt.

As for why she had Yoriko Sakaguro, who was previously arrested, take her place, there's two reasons. First, the story reason; she wanted to get rid of Yoriko and fake her death. Reika was beginning to put together a case against her, so she decided to drag Yoriko out of prison and took her to get plastic surgery with her. She's now posing as a man for now, but I've decided not to reveal what her new alias is. And the reason for that largely lies in the second reason why she decided to do all this; the behind the scenes reason.

So the original plan was actually to have Rika kill off Himawari, however, I felt keeping her alive would be better for the overall Jouzu-verse as I'm considering having her become an antagonist again in other works. I will confirm though, that she is superintendent general, but only Purin and Kaori know. She also has to be careful not to be found out by Reika, so for the next few years in-universe, she'll largely refrain from making any drastic moves, or going after Rika and co.

As for Honoka, I decided I wanted her to have a bit more screen-time which is why she appeared in this chapter. She will be getting a proper chapter focusing on her though, so look forward to that. And with this chapter out of the way, I can happily confirm that all the 5 remaining chapters will be wholesome slice-of-life chapters.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #181:

Time to talk about Chapter 181: The Frankenstein-Dracula Vienna surprise.
Turns out anyone really can play chess, even a baby just shy of being a year old. Yumi is indeed a gifted prodigy and has a long prestigious chess career ahead of her. I actually planned to have Iori face Cinnamon first though, but there were a few reasons I had Yumi go first instead. One of which being the game itself.

Since Yumi is a baby, I didn't want her to play a long and drawn out game, so naturally I had to have Iori get overconfident and blunder into mate. I originally had the game as a typical Scholar's mate game, but it quickly became a Vienna game: Frankenstein-Dracula variation, and yes it is a real opening. With a name like that, I naturally wanted to feature it in the series, however, there was a problem; none of the bots I played would even play the Vienna game. I did find a way to make them though, but the games ended up being really long.

Luckily, the Frankenstein-Dracula variation has a mate trap, so all I had to do was have Iori try to pull off a Bongcloud, or should I say Boocloud, and Yumi won. Hmm, perhaps we'll call this the Vienna game: Frankenstein-Dracula, Boocloud mate. Since I used the opening in this game, it's likely not going to be in the next game between Iori and Cinnamon. However, there will be another Frankenstein-Dracula game in the series, perhaps coming as soon as the climax of the Side Story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #136:

Time to talk about Chapter 136: Trial and mastermind.
We're in the endgame now with only 6 main chapters left after this. But there's still one last mystery to solve, but first let's talk about the chapter. It really went by quickly, and as a result of Itsuki testifying, Mahi was eventually found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, all isn't quite well as it appears that Himawari's decided to make her move and arrest Rika. But first, let's talk about a character I meant to talk about previously, Mimi's father, Lucas.

ルーカス・ソルハヴェット (Lucas Sølvhavet) is how his name is spelled in katakana. His last name, Sølvhavet, is Norwegian for "The silver sea".

マーシャ・ソルヴァヴェット (Masha Sølvhavet) is how his wife, Masha, who is also Mimi's mother, has her name spelled in katakana.
Both of their birthdays are on November 2nd, however they were born in different years. This date was chosen at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is their birthday.

His favorite food is kringles while Masha's is suksessterte.

トム・ルビオ (Tom Rubio) is how Tom's name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is December 29th, which is the day Texas became the 28th state to join the US.

His favorite food is chili, which is also the state food of Texas.

テレサ・ブロードストーン (Theresa Broadstone) is how Theresa's name is spelled in katakana. Unlike Tom, she'll be a very important character in other works, in fact her name might give away how she'll fit into the Jouzu-verse.
フィアナ・クニンガーナ (Fiana Kuninganna) is how her sister's name is spelled in katakana. Kunninganna is actually Estonian for "queen".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Both were born on April 4th.

    Their favorite food is cucumbers.

While these characters won't play much of a role in this story, Rika simply meeting Theresa will end up effecting things later down the timeline. I won't say how, but I will say it will occur in En Passant Grandmaster.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
