    Author's Commentary #142: [Final]
The time has come for the final author's commentary of the series, so let's talk about the final chapter, Chapter 142: Spice of life.
This is nearly identical to the Happy ending of the original, however a key difference is the context behind why one of Rika's children is named "Waki". Speaking of which, let's talk about all of them.

稜之 和喜 (Ryono Waki) is how Waki's name is spelled in kanji. 和喜 means "harmony" and "celebration". She's obviously named after Waki Kasegawa, however the kanji in her name is different from Waki's.

稜之 シナモン (Ryono Cinnamon) is how Cinnamon's name is spelled in Japanese.

Their birthday is February 5th. The date was chosen at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is their birthday.

Waki's favorite food is steamed veggies, while Cinnamon's is sugar cookies.

稜之 ボルド (Ryono Boldo) is how Boldo's name is spelled in Japanese.

稜之 メイス (Ryono Mace) is how Mace's name is spelled in Japanese.

稜之 ジャスミン (Ryono Jasmine) is how Jasmine's name is spelled in Japanese.

Their birthday is July 31st. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is their birthday.

The three are still too young to really eat anything, so for now their favorite food is Masaru's baby food.

稜之 佑海 (Ryono Yumi) is how Yumi's name is spelled in kanji. 佑海 means "protect" and "gathering place". It's also a pun on "Yummy".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is September 23rd, which is also the day the first chapter of Spice of life was published. In fact, it's the EXACT date to the year as well.

Like the triplets, her favorite food is Masaru's baby food.

Now for my final thoughts on the remake. To be honest, it's kind of hard to believe this journey that started back in April is finally over. However, this is not the last you'll see of Spice of life characters as they appear in both Escape:Witch remake and En Passant Grandmaster. Speaking of which, the most recent arc that concluded in EPGM, just so happened to be centered around Ryokoma, with a spotlight on Yumi and Cinnamon. If you just want to check that arc out, It's Side Story 2 and lasts from Chapters 178 to 187 of that series. I might also tell backstories of characters like Cinnamon in future arcs of that series too, so feel free to check it out if you want.

Getting back to the remake, it turned out it was 20 chapters more than the original, however, this version is the definitive and cannon version of the story. Thank you to everyone that's read and supported this series. It's thanks to your support that this series went as long as it did, and I had the motivation to write it.

That's all for the author's commentaries for this series. I hope you enjoyed reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

    Author's Commentary #187:

Time to talk about the final chapter of Side Story 2, Chapter 187: Tokyo's brand new secret puzzle cafe.
Thanks to beating Rize and the Tabemono team as a whole, the secret puzzle cafe has been given the OK. And thanks to it, Cinnamon and Yumi now have the perfect environment to hone their chess prowess. Now lets talk a bit about some of the other characters that were introduced.

稜之 優 (Ryono Masaru) is how Masaru's name is spelled in kanji. 優 means "superiority".

His birthday is April 12th and he shares it with Rika. The two were actually born at the same time as well.

He doesn't really play chess, but he'll say his favorite piece is the bishop, mainly because it reminds him of a salt and pepper shaker.

名智 抹茶 (Myouchi Matcha) is how Matcha's name is spelled in kanji. 抹茶 means "to erase" and "tea", while 名智 means "reputation" and "wise".
She was obviously named in reference of matcha tea which is also why her hair is green.

Her birthday is May 2nd which is is national matcha day, and while she does enjoy drinking matcha tea, her favorite food is actually yakisoba.

銀川 心美 (Ginkawa Mimi) is how her name is written in kanji. 心美 means "heart" and "beauty", while 銀川 means "silver river".

Her birthday is January 20th which is national cheese lovers day. This is fitting considering her favorite food is Danablu cheese.

Her favorite piece is the knight, mainly because it's the most spy-like according to her.

Finally, the name of Cinnamon's twin sister has been revealed, so here's her bio.
稜之 和喜 (Ryono Waki) is how her name is spelled in kanji. 和喜 means "harmony" and "celebration".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is February 5th, the same as Cinnamon's. She's actually the older of the twins, being born a minute earlier.

Her favorite piece is the queen, due to dreaming it the most essential piece on the board. She isn't as gifted as Cinnamon at chess, but possess intellect beyond her age.

And now, Side Story 2 has come to a close. I'm not sure if I'll jump into Side Story 3 immediately, in fact I'd say it will likely be a few days before a new chapter comes out as I haven't written anything yet, but I do have some fun ideas so look forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #180:

Time to talk about Chapter 180: Cooking up trouble.
To clarify from the get-go for those who don't know, Rika is actually a former assassin, hailing from a branch of one of the most infamous assassin families in the world. As such, she has the ability to tell when someone's killed, as well as how much they've killed. So when she saw Iori, she took no chances. And thus, this will begin the hostilities between Rika and Iori. Now let's talk about the characters that showed up in this chapter.

稜之 シナモン (Ryono Cinnamon) is how Cinnamon's name is spelled in Japanese.

Her birthday is February 5th, which she also shares with her twin sister, who briefly appeared in this chapter. The date was chosen at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is their birthday.

She doesn't play chess yet, though like her mother and older brother, the knight is most likely her favorite piece, due to it reminding her of the horses on the merry-go-round she like to ride at the mall.

稜之 佑海 (Ryono Yumi) is how Yumi's name is spelled in kanji. 佑海 means "protect" and "gathering place". It's also a pun on "Yummy".

Her birthday is September 23rd, which is also the day the first chapter of Spice of life was published. In fact, it's the EXACT date to the year as well.

She doesn't play chess yet, but her favorite piece would likely be the king.

白姫 紅姫 (Shirohime Benihime) is how her name is spelled in kanji. Her first name, 紅姫, means "crimson" and "noblewoman" while 白姫 means "white" and "princess". A large inspiration for her character was Constance von Nuvelle from Fire Emblem Three houses.

Her birthday is June 21st, which is national wagyu day. This is fitting since wagyu is her favorite meal.

She doesn't play chess, though is about to and as such, her favorite piece will quickly become the queen.

撫養 里瀬 (Muya Rize) is how Rize's name is written in kanji. 里瀬 means "hometown" and "rapids", while 撫養 means "comfort" and "nurture".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is August 2nd, which she shares with Asahi Saiba from Shokugeki no Soma. Ironically, she's more heavily inspired by Rindo Kobayashi from the same series.

It's a mystery whether she's played chess or not, but her favorite piece would likely be the queen.

This Side Story will be longer compared to the first one, but that also means there will be more games showcased. First up is Iori's grudge match against Rika. Obviously, this was a one-sided slaughter as Rika has never played chess before. Though in terms of assassin skills, Rika outclasses Iori despite being 9 years older than her. The next game will pit Iori against one of Rika's daughters though.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #186:

Time to talk about Chapter 186: Fried fox cook-off.
When I fist learned of the Fried fox defense, I knew this had to be the opening Okisato would use to defeat Rize. The game itself was surprisingly thrilling, and featured many twists and turns. Though this victory does mean Mimoko and Bernie won't face off. Now let's shift topics and talk a bit about a character who appeared a few chapters ago, Itsuki.

牧原 五生 (Makihara Itsuki) is how her name is spelled in kanji. 五生 means "five" and "raw". I chose this name both to reference the character Itsuki draws her name from, Itsuki Nakano from the Quintessential Quintuplets, and Gordon Ramsay who is know for shouting "RAW". 牧原 means "pasture" and "origin".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is February 9th which is actually National pizza day. The reason for being that Itsuki's favorite food is Pizza. She just can't resist the flavor of it and believes it to be a true culinary masterpiece.

Her favorite piece is the bishop, mainly because it's movement is the easiest for her to understand.

Now that Rize's been defeated, the Side Story will come to a close next chapter. This one was certainly more action-packed than the first, which has also given me new ideas for future Side Stories. The next Side Story may not come out immediately though.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:186

    Author's Commentary #185:

Time to talk about Chapter 185: Nobody expects the Spanish variation.
And neither did I as a matter of fact. Rodeo was always destined to lose this game, but the question was how. I wanted the game to be quick, but none of the games I had in my library fit the bill. So I decided to play some more against the bots, and lo and behold, a Spanish variation game appeared.

As soon as I saw the opening title, I knew I had to make that the game and have the title reference Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition skit. Best of all, the game was short too and was easy to write. Ginji really is a giant asshole though, but Zuina most certainly isn't.

Her full name is Zuina Morsten Adler and she was born to a British father and Japanese mother.
ズイナ・モーステン・アドラー (Zuina Morsten Adler) is how her full name would be spelled in Japanese. She actually was given a name with kanji by her mother and chose to adopt that name once she moved from England to Japan with her sister.
アドラー 瑞菜 (Adler Zuina) is how her name is spelled with her first name in kanji. 瑞菜 means "fortune" and "vegetable" which is fitting since she was raised on a British farm.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me.

Her birthday is October 25th which is national pasta day. However, her favorite food is breadsticks, mainly due to how simplistic they are. National breadstick day is a thing, however, the date is always on the last Friday of October. Since National breadstick day falls on October 25th this year, I decided to make the date Zuina's birthday. Not to mention, breadsticks also go great with pasta.

Due to her farming background, her favorite piece is naturally the knight, due to it being a horse.

As for Rize's grand reveal of her rating, she's actually been participating in chess tournaments for years but never registering with the WWCF, all for a moment like this. Of course, Okisato doesn't care and decides to play the King's pawn opening: Barnes, Fried fox defense, which is in fact a real move. How the game will go remains to be seen, but regardless of the result, Mimoko's probably going to be mad at him. Though if he does win, it would mean Bernie and Mimoko wouldn't play against each other, so perhaps she'd cut him some slack if he wins.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:185

    Author's Commentary #184:

Time to talk about Chapter 184: Executive circuit breaker.
As mentioned in the previous commentary, the game featured in this chapter was actually written months ago, and intended for Season 3. Obviously, that didn't happen, but the game is here in Side Story 2 in all it's glory, and boy is it epic.

Like his ancestor, Paul Morphy, Peter is a part of the club that has delivered a castling checkmate. The crazy thing about Paul's case though is that he was only around 12 years old and playing with rook odds, meaning he was down his a-rook, yet he still managed to pull off a castling checkmate against his father, Alonzo Morphy. Peter's on a whole different level though and now gets his 10th castling checkmate overall. Now let's talk about his opponent as well as the remaining member of the Tabemono team that has yet to get a bio.

キット・ジーグラー卿 (Sir Kit Ziegler) is how Kit's name is spelled in Japanese. His name is actually a pun on "circuit", which is fitting considering he constantly relies on a chip implant to be good at chess.

His birthday is May 21st. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the bishop, mainly because he deems it to be the most powerful minor piece.

バーニー・ルーミス (Bernie Ruumis) is how Bernie's name is spelled in katakana.

    His birthday is July 5th.

His favorite piece is the knight.

Now that Peter and Utami have won, things are looking pretty good for the chess club. However, Rodeo must now face his toughest opponent yet, Ginji Inohara, and if he loses, Okisato will have to play Rize, who's true skill is unknown. Speaking of unknowns, Bernie's an even bigger one. Just because Okisato wasn't able to find him or Rize in the database, doesn't mean one or both are actually executive board members.

Speaking of which, most of the executive board members did get chips implanted in them in order to get good at chess. However, some like Pewler did not and were naturally talented. Raymond doesn't have one either as his skill is the real deal, and second only to the maestros.

The bigger mystery is how Peter knew all that though. Perhaps it's as simple as him getting that information from Pewler, or perhaps there's more to it. Either way, the mystery will eventually be answered as the story goes on.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
