    Author's Commentary #6:

Time to talk about Chapter 6: Tennison's ICBM.
Carol's getting a chance to shine and showcase one the more fun gambits, the Tennison Gambit. Nicknamed the ICBM gambit, this gambit, if successful, nets you the enemy queen and puts the enemy king in a more precarious position. Speaking of the bird that got blasted in the face with Carol's ICBM, let's talk about him.

エドワード・アレン・ジキル (Edward Allen Jekyll) is how his name is written in katakana. He takes inspiration from both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven.

His birthday is January 29th which is when The Raven was first published.

His favorite piece is the knight because it's the closest piece to resembling a raven, according to him.

In the original version, Edgar's rating was over 2100 while Carol's was 400, and while I felt at the time having Edgar blunder so badly could be used to show that even top players can fall for lower level traps, I felt in the end it would be better to just nerf the bird. Thus, he's now rated 721, while Carol now has a buff and is rated 500. Carol's not in the same tier as Mimoko, Okisato, and Iori, but she's learning the game quickly and could easily become a top player in due time.

Since the Tennison Gambit is so satisfying to pull off, I wanted it to be featured in the series, but since advanced level players tend to thwart it, someone like Mimoko likely wouldn't play it. Thus, I decided to have Carol play it. Funnily enough, the Tennison Gambit starts as early as 1. Nf3 d5 2. e4/1.e4 d5 2. Nf3. Unofficially, some dub the continuation that leads to winning the queen, the Bosnian Gambit, due to YouTube user, Bosnian Ape Society, popularizing the gambit. Thus, I'll dub the 1. Nf3 d5 2. e4 dxe4 3. Ng5 Nf6 4. d3 exd3 5. Bxd3 h6 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 7. Bg6+ line, the Bosnian-ICBM Gambit. I'm not sure how much more we'll see of this gambit in the series, but at least I was able to showcase it here.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #5:

Time to talk about Chapter 5: Thick fog and a Danish Gambit.
Things are starting to heat up now that some Desperados are on the hunt. Luckily, Okisato just so happened to be nearby and was able to take one of them out.

One thing I will confirm is that the DESPERs are capable of teleporting players to real world places as settings for the game. This is why Okisato is trapped atop the Tokyo Skytree. He'll get rescued eventually, so no need to worry about him. His opponent, though, is dead. Speaking of which, let's talk a bit about Col Baskerville Moran.

バスカヴィル・モラン大佐 (Col Baskerville Moran) is how his name would be written in Japanese. He's an obvious Sherlock Holmes reference referencing both Hound of the Baskervilles and the character, Col Sebastien Moran. Even his rating of 2212 is a reference to Holmes' address of 221B Baker Street.

His birthday is September 26th which is the day The Adventure of the Empty House, the story Col Moran debuted in, was first published.

His favorite piece is the rook, mainly because it reminds him of a cannon. He actually did serve in the military, but was dishonorably discharged due to his brutality. He was actually only a Private when this happened, but soon after, he joined the Desperado league and was awarded the rank of Colonel after beating the head of the military in a DESPER match.

As for the game, it features a Danish Gambit, or more accurately, a Danish Gambit Declined. The Danish Gambit is a very aggressive opening which is why I wanted to feature it in the series. Since it was declined in this game, there's a good chance there will be a game in the future where it isn't declined, though probably not in this volume.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #10:

Time to talk about Chapter 10: Maestro Xiao Lin.
Originally, this was going to be the first chapter of Season 2 in the original, however, I decided to push it back a bit after deciding to do the Kazuya mini-arc. And ironically enough, here in the volume, it got pushed back a chapter past its debut in relation to its original counterpart.

The game was once again, a me vs Chess.com bot match. However, as soon as the game was complete, I played around with some different scenarios and altered the game to its present form within the chapter. Now let's discuss Xiao Lin.

Xiao Lin is one of the seven secret chess maestros and as such, has a rating over 3000 and a black WWCF card to denote her status as a maestro.

小琳 (Xiao Lin) is how her name is spelled in kanji and can translate to "small jade". シャオ・リン (Xiao Lin) is how it would be written in katakana.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is April 20th, with the reason for that being because jade is considered to be the natural birthstone for those born between April 20th and May 20th. Xiao Lin has an affinity for Jade, even residing on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Her favorite piece is the queen, mainly because she considers herself the true queen of chess.

One final thing I'll mention is that there actually is a variation of chess called kung-fu chess. However, rather than alternating between kung-fu and chess like in chess boxing, kung-fu chess simply allows multiple pieces to be moved simultaneously. However, there is a cool down period before a piece can be moved again. Victory is also only achievable by capturing the king. While Xiao Lin is skilled in this discipline, she is far more dominant in kung-fu, which led to her creating a kung-fu variant of chess boxing. Though, the variant is not officially recognized by the WWCF.

The maestros are actually free to implement any challenge condition so long as it's to a game of chess. Most maestros do something simple like either having the game be on a faster time control, not exceeding 100 moves, or requiring the challenger to play as a certain color. Of course, this only applies to the initial challenge as upon beating the maestro, the challenger can rematch them much like the SPCMs, though will not be required to adhere to the original stipulations of the challenge.

As for why Xiao Lin implemented such a challenge, vanity. This woman is vain and petty, which will show itself more as the series progresses.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
