    Author's Commentary #403:

Time to talk about Chapter 403: Enter the Fairy gauntlet.
It's time to see just what Daria was doing that led to her facing so many people. Turns out, she was on an infiltration mission to try and save Ina. That means the "Daria" that was present in the playing hall was actually Miga in disguise. Unfortunately for Daria, the Fairies look to be one step ahead, or rather, held a trump card the WWCF didn't know about. I'll get more into that in the commentary of later chapters.

As for the game, it's Sorcha vs Daria proper, with a Chigorin, Irish gambit as well. It really is ironic that despite this one being the more solid of the two Irish gambits, all the games it's showcased in result in Black's loss, while the other Irish gambit is always able to win. Not sure if this will continue throughout the course of the series, but it just might as sort of a series joke.

Yet the match with Sorcha is only the beginning. Daria is now stuck in a simul challenge where she must beat all the challengers that come before her in order to free the hostages. I will give fair warning that due to burnout and the sheer amount of games that Daria will be playing, I will not be showcasing all of them properly in their entirety. That being said, to compensate there will be some chapters delving into Daria's backstory, which will feature a really good game shown in it's entirety, and trust me, you'll want to see this game. All I'll say is that it's so hype, it's in contention for being one of the top 30 best games in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #41:

Time to discuss Chapter 41: One wrong move.
This was originally the 42nd chapter, but I decided to move things around as part of my revisions to Season 2 and 3. As such, this chapter now takes place much sooner than before. It also used to be split into two chapters, but following the most recent revisions to Season 1, I decided to merge them. The title of the chapter that used to exist was "The cruelest of wins". As for why I merged the two, it was both because I didn't want the chapter numbers to get all messed up following the Season 1 revisions, and because I felt the game worked better being meshed into one chapter.

I guess now is a good time to divulge more on Kazuya. He is the student council president and has a knack for politics. However, he is also dating and highly obedient to Shion. He's so loyal to Shion, that he essentially functions as her proxy for controlling the student council behind the scenes.

The kanji for his full name is 榎 和矢 (Enoki Kazuya). His first name, 和矢, translates to "harmony" and "dart", though also "feces" which is why the principal gave him the name since he believed he was shit, due to not having a knack for shogi. In short, the principal was a piece of shit, which is why Kazuya had no problem killing him.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His favorite piece is the knight as he views himself as Shion's noble knight.

Since he's Nagi's older twin brother, he shares his April 6th birthday with him. The two actually got along fairly well, so much so that when Kazuya heard of Nagi's death, he put a plan of vengeance in motion. As for said plan, the principal's death is the first phase of it while phase 2 centers around Utami.

Speaking of which, Utami's actually been living with Mimoko ever since the bughouse game. As such, they've gotten much closer with each other as no one else in Mimoko's family plays chess.

The game for this chapter was easily the one I hated writing the most. Getting the game to the point where Utami was on the verge of being promoted was a nightmare. I actually had to go through three different games before getting everything right.

The first was good until I realized Utami's pawn had been captured early so that game had to go. The second game was just bad. I basically had the characters intentionally making bad moves in order to set up the scenario where Utami's pawn made it to the 2nd rank. Then there was this one... It was the best, so I went with it.

As for the pawn promotion rule, Kazuya's actually the only one who's experimented with it. Technically speaking, the pawn itself is completely removed from play when it promotes. I'm sure this topic has the potential to spawn many debates regarding it.

One notable change between this revised version and the original version is Svetlana's presence. I felt having Svetlana be present here worked better as it both illustrates how rash in judgement she can be when Okisato's around, and helps show off a key plot-point of the story, which I'll discuss in greater detail in a later commentary.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #39:

It's finally time to discuss the final chapter of Season 1, Chapter 39: The 7 secret chess maestros.
The idea of there being secret super grandmasters was a by product of my "if this novel gets a video game adaptation, it needs to have this" mentality. However, as I thought about the idea more, I got inspiration for a new arc of the story and subsequent arcs as well.

If you remember back in Chapter 30: Peter Morphy, the names of all of Japan's SPCMs (secret puzzle cafe managers) were mentioned. In addition to beating Himitsudono of the Ibaraki prefecture, Okisato's also beaten Himitsutan of Kyushu, and Himitsukun of Hokkaido. He also can challenge Himitsusama of Okinawa and Himitsuchan of the Tochigi prefecture. He has met Himitsuue, but can't challenge her until he beats all the other SPCMs in Japan. Himitsusan, however, is the only SPCM he hasn't encountered yet.

As for the DSPCMs (deputy secret puzzle cafe managers), I originally introduced the concept of them back when I first did my major revisions to Season 4. They're essentially secret puzzle cafe managers in countries that don't have a maestro. Said countries can get anywhere from 1 to 6 DSPCMs, based off of a global chess power ranking system. For example, a place like Serbia would get 5 spots due to it's chess prowess while a place like Montenegro would only get 2. Nations can also get more DSPCMs than originally allotted, though the total number of DSPCMs can never exceed 6. City states such as Monaco and San Marino, can only ever have 1 DSPCM due to them being city states.

One final thing to touch on with SPCMs and DSPCMs is the fact that they can compete in tournaments. Originally, I had it so that once someone became an SPCM they were effectively retired from competitive play, but I reversed this as I felt it didn't make sense in the long run.

Now onto the maestros. They are this world's secret top chess players. Each one is located in a different country and each has 7 SPCMs serving under them. Japan's maestro is Maestro Himitsu.

Speaking of maestros, Season 2 was once officially titled, The fallen maestro. If you read my initial post, you'll know that I originally decided to have a Season 2 Part 1 and Part 2. However, I decided to reverse that decision and have Season 2 just be Season 2, and Season 2 Part 2 be Season 3. Though Seasons 3 could be considered The Fallen Maestro arc.

Just as I mentioned before though, Season 2 was thought up and written before I thought up the concept of the maestros. However, it does have some small build-up moments which will lead into Season 3. Not to mention Season 2 will also introduce some integral characters to Season 3. I hope you look forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
