Author's Commentary #654:
Time to talk about Chapter 654: Demonstration match.
This feels like a chapter that would likely take place much earlier in the series, and with the volume revisions being a thing, maybe there's a chance it will be. First I'd like to talk more about the demonstration board.
If you ever played chess at a club or as a team, either your coach/supervising teacher had one of these, or someone else did. These things are an iconic part of any chess learning experience, or at least it was for me. Now just to clarify, this demonstration board has been a part of the chess club since the Season 1 days in-universe, but it's just now getting some spotlight.
As for the game, it's played entirely on the demonstration board and is framed more as a lecture than a game, even though Mimoko's putting elo on the line for the sake of teaching. Since she is teaching, she'll sometimes opt not to make the best possible move deliberately.
One final thing to note about the challenges is that Mimoko does impose some restrictions. First, you can only play her no more than once a week, with exceptions being given only if no one else wishes to challenge her that day. Second, Iori and Okisato are not allowed to challenge her due to how advanced their levels are and her not wanting to hog everyone's attention with the game. That being said, she'll often share and analyze their games and more often than not, critique their choices.
That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
