    Author's Commentary #249:

Time to talk about Chapter 249: Diederich's Arena der Blitzhölle.
First off, Arena der Blitzhölle means "Arena of lightning hell". This is very fitting considering who Diederich is based off of. Speaking of which, let's talk about him and Übel.

ユーベル・ベール (Übel Bähr) is how Übel's name is spelled in katakana. He is based off of Kommandant Ubel from Battalion Wars.

His birthday is September 19th, which is the day Battalion Wars was released. The latter part of his 2505 rating is also a reference to 2005, the year Battalion Wars came out.

His favorite piece is the pawn, mainly because it's the simplest piece.

ディーデリヒ・フォン・リヒトホーフェン (Diederich von Richthofen) is how his name is spelled in katakana. He's the biological grandson of Red Reaper and is heavily based off of Laxus Dreyer from Fairy Tail.

His birthday is October 24th. Since I couldn't find an official birthday for Laxus, I decided to have Diederich's birthday be a combination of both the anime episode, episode 10, and the manga chapter, chapter 24, that Laxus made his debuts in. The later part of his 2706 rating is also a reference to 2006, the year Fairy Tail began serialization.

His favorite piece is the rook. Guy thinks they're big bad bazookas for him to wield.

Believe it or not, I actually had a concept for a "battle chess" chuuni character way back in the early planning stages of this series, thus I'm glad that idea has finally come to fruition in the form of Diederich. Speaking of which, this game was by far one of the more intense ones to write. It was actually the fact that the rooks were so key to Diederich's victory that I decided to make him obsessed with rooks. While I'm not sure how many more on-screen Diederich games there will be in the series as a whole, he will definitely have some during the Chess Olympics. I hope you're looking forward to it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #248:

Time to talk about Chapter 248: Beauty in mate.
This chapter seeks to introduce the final member of the Japanese men's team, Ryonosuke Hobou. I'll give his bio first and then talk about the game.

保房 涼之介 (Hobou Ryonosuke) is how his name is spelled in kanji. 保房 means "preserve" and "chamber", while 涼之介 means "cool", "to go", an "intermediary".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is September 27th, which he shares with Japanese FIDE master, Yoshiharu Habu.

His favorite piece is the rook, as it is also one of the most powerful pieces in shogi.

Ryonosuke is an obvious parody of Yoshiharu Habu. While Yoshiharu Habu is primarily a shogi player, he did manage to achieve a peak chess rating of 2415 as well as the title of FIDE master. This is why Ryonosuke has a rating of 2415, and this story's equivalent to the FIDE master title, WWCF master.

As for the game, it features some new openings. First up is The Anderssen opening: Prussian, Kaiser gambit 1. a3 d5 2. e4 . And second, The Anderssen opening: Prussian, Kaiser, Richthofen gambit 1. a3 d5 2. e4 dxe4 3. d4. Okisato named the moves in honor, or perhaps dishonor, of Red Reaper due to the sequence of moves not being well regarded by the eval bar.

I was originally going to have the game end in a resignation, but then the beautiful checkmate at the end occurred, and I knew I had to have the game end with it. This checkmate truly made me step back and admire how beautiful it was. I dubbed it the "Bull's-eye mate" mainly because the mate was reminiscent of an arrow flying into a target, with the rook being the arrow, and the pawn the target. While I doubt the game itself will crack my top 10 favorite games, the checkmate itself is by far one of my favorites in the series.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #247:

Time to talk about Chapter 247: The American team's meeting.
This chapter introduces all the remaining members of the American men's team. Funnily enough, they're all parodies of real-life chess players. Now let's do their bios.

ヒューバート・ノイマン (Hubert Neuman) is how Hubert's name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is June 20th, which he shares with American grandmaster, Hans Nieman.

His favorite piece is the pawn.

リーバイ・アーロン (Levi Arron) is how Levi's name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is October 6th, which he shares with Armenian-American grandmaster, Levon Aronian.

His favorite piece is the bishop.

ルイージ・カルパニ (Luigi Carpani) is how Luigi's name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is July 30th which he shares with Italian-American grandmaster and current number 2 player in the world, Fabiano Caruana.

His favorite piece is the knight.

As for the ratings, Luigi's is what Fabiano's unofficial peak rating was, Hubert's is what Hans' current rating is, and Levi's is what Levon's current rating is. Peter has now also crossed 2900, but his WWCF card remains teal colored as purple is only reserved for executive board members. In a sense, the American team is essentually Bobby FIscher, Paul Morphy, Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian, and Hans Nieman. In other words, a stacked team. With an average rating of 2854.8, they're easily the top seed in the Chess Olympics. If Japan manages to face them, the match up truly will be epic, but if they do, I imagine it wouldn't be until the latter end of the tournament.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
