    Author's Commentary #313:

Time to talk about Chapter 313: The real deal.
The games have begun and Daria has already won her game. Since I didn't get the chance to last commentary, I want to briefly go over the bios for the two new characters introduced last chapter.

ショシャナ・ルソン (Shoshana Luzon) is how Shoshana's name would be written in katakana. שושנה לוזון (Shoshana Luzon) is how her name would be spelled in Hebrew.

    Her birthday is June 12th.

Her favorite piece is the knight as she feels it symbolizes a knight in shining armor.

Shoshana's character actually went through many revisions before arriving at the final product. First, she was energetic but edgy, then she was a bully meant to antagonize Noa, but now she's edgy and a bit morose.

オルダ・イチェン (Orda Ichen) is how Orda's name would be written in katakana. Орда Ичэн (Orda Ichen) is how his name would be spelled in Mongolian.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is December 6th. Since there's no official birthday for the historical Orda, I decided to have this Orda's birthday be this date as 1206 was the year the historical Orda was born.

His favorite piece is the knight as he likes to do horseback archery.

Like Jochi, Orda is a human of this era that simply shares his name with a historical figure. He's easily the most underdeveloped character on the Mongolian team, but I have some ideas on what to do with his character.

As for the game between Daria and Orit, it was actually played against Chess.com's 2900 engine bot with assisted mode on. I'm honestly a tad surprised by how much that bot blunders. If you'll recall, it was subject to the humiliating defeat that would become the Okisato vs Xiao Lin match from Chapter 161: The Tumbleweed gambit. I also got a game that will be used in the future that ended in just 19 moves against the bot. Despite that though, I don't mind as it actually lend itself well narratively as just like the 2900-level executive board members, it messes up frequently.

One final thing to touch on is Noa. For her game, I set the engine to the maximum rating of 3200. The result is a thrilling 50-move plus game that will keep you on the edge of your seat. As for how this came to be, it was pure chance. I originally had no grand plans for Noa, but after deciding to have Japan face Simien in round 5, I needed someone to face Mimoko and give her a challenge. Golda was originally slated for the role, but since I wanted her to open with the Goldsmith Defense, I felt she'd be a more suitable opponent for Tenju. Thus, Noa was elevated to prodigy status.

On the topic of Noa's rating, she's still young in her chess journey, but as she gets more chances to display her prowess, it will get higher. She's also frequently subject to getting nervous, hence why she's nicknamed Nerva by Shoshana, which also can impede her progress. But Mimoko helped bring out her best due to her welcoming personality.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #312:

Time to talk about Chapter 312: Scourge of Urga.
Talk about cinematic. The only thing that could make this more badass would be if some badass music was playing, and funnily enough, I do have a song in mind, Wolf Totem by The Hu. If you've heard the song before, you can easily see that Jad's back and forth with his army is inspired by the songs opening lines. If this ever got an anime and/or video game adaptation though, I'd try to push for Wolf Totem to be used as an insert song for this moment as it's exactly the song I want to play during this moment.

Moving onto other topics, some might wonder why the title is "Scourge of Urga" and not "Scourge of Ulaanbataar". For those that don't know, Urga was the historical name for Mongolia's capitol city, Ulaanbaatar. But with Jad's rise, the city has been renamed Urga. The reasoning behind that lies in the meaning behind Ulaanbaatar's name itself. For those who don't know, Ulaanbaatar literally translates to "Red Hero" and became the official name of the city in 1924 upon the official formation of the Mongolian People's Republic. Thus, the name change in-universe is significant as it offers a clue as yo who Jad might really be.

And finally, the games are kicking off. I was debating splitting this chapter up due to it's length, but felt it would be better to end on the cliffhanger of Mimoko being on the ropes. It's been a while since Mimoko's truly faced an opponent that's pushed here, and with Noa, I can safely say the match will be intense, so if you're a Mimoko fan, I hope you're hyped for it.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #311:

Time to talk about Chapter 311: Foggy memory.
It's been a while, but there's finally a chapter with no games taking place in it. The focus is also back on Okisato and co as they prepare for the 5th round. With Iori out sick, Tenju will be back in the spotlight as the women's team takes on the New Kingdom of Simien. The men on the other hand are up against Mongolia.

Originally, I was going to have the men face Mongolia in round 4 and then both teams face India in round 5. I decided against it though which not only led to this moment, but also the German Empire of Prussia game against Mongolia in round 4.

Some might question how Japan is even getting paired up against Mongolia as even though both teams lost their 4th round games, Japan is still a point ahead of them making it difficult for them to be close in the standings. All I'll say on that is 3 Spanish men in red robes might have messed things up a bit when they tried to, shall we say, persuade the staff to fix the pairings in a certain way.

One final thing I'll bring attention to is Ayane. It appears like she can't remember what went on. Perhaps Rasputin is behind this, though Muazzez is also kinda sus.

The next chapter will officially mark the start of round 5, and while it's not a game per say, there will be an amazing cinematic moment in the chapter you won't want to miss. Get hyped because the 5th round will feature some intense games, many longer than 30 moves for our main characters.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
