    Author's Commentary #151:

Time to talk about Chapter 151: The terror of Red Reaper.
I know I said daily uploads were unlikely, but I just couldn't wait to post this one. It highlights just how much of a threat Red Reaper truly is. Obviously, I'm not going to reveal how he was able to revive here. All I'll say is that it will be revealed as the story progresses. Since the story is shifting back to London though, it's time to give the bios on the final three key members of the Fairy league.

メラニア・プラヴ (Melania Plav) is how Melania's name is written in katakana. Plav is actually Croatian for blue, thus she continues the trend of having her surname be a color.

Her birthday is April 27th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the pawn, mainly because she views them as organized subordinates.

メデューサ・インディゴ (Medeucesa Indikó) is how Medeucesa's name is spelled in katakana. Naturally, her last name is Greek for Indigo. Speaking of which, Μέδουσες Ινδικό (Medeucesa Indikó) is how I believe her name would be written in Greek.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is March 2nd. I chose the date at random so there's no greater significance behind why that date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the bishop, mainly because she likes controling the diagonals.

プラム・シチューピッド・パープル (Plum Stupid Purple) is how Plum's name is written in katakana.

His birthday is November 5th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the knight, mainly because he likes riding horses on the carousel.

Now all the Fairy league members have their bios. While I don't think all of them will get a major spot light, some will, so look forward to those matches.

One final thing I'll mention is in regards to the Ultima-master. The Ultima-master has seemingly made it's debut and it's a machine of some sorts. However, there's something special about this "Ultima-master". As for what that is, it will be explained more in future arcs of the story.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:151

    Author's Commentary #179:

Time to talk about Chapter 179: Dinner in Tokyo.
Originally, I planned to show the game between Mimoko and Daria. However, the games I ended up playing against the Chess.com engine bots were just too long. Not to mention, I was lacking the motivation to write the game out. Guess the Sodium attack opening just doesn't get my creative juices flowing as much, though to be fair, the games were REALLY long, like over 70 moves long. Not to mention, I wanted to progress the story more.

Speaking of which, this marks the first crossover appearance of Rika from Spice of life as well as the restaurant, Ryokoma, appearing in the story. This does mean there are going to be some end of series spoilers for Spice of life in this Side Story, so fair warning. However, there's no need to worry if you've never read the series, so feel free to enjoy the Side Story. Now let's do a quick bio on Rika, Togarashi, Cyril, and Ginji.

稜之 俐佳 (Ryono Rika) is how her name is spelled in kanji. 俐佳 means "sharp" and "beautiful" while 稜之 means "peak" and "to reach".

As for Ryokoma, りょうこま is how it is it is written in Japanese, though it might be written in katakana instead as リョーコマ. Since Ryokoma is actually a combination of the names Ryono and Komachi, I'm assuming hiragana would be used, but since I'm not 100% sure, I included the name in katakana.

Her birthday is April 12th, which is also the day Ryokoma first opened.

稜之 唐辛子 (Ryono Togarashi) is how Togarashi's name is spelled in kanji. 唐辛子 means "chili pepper".

His birthday is December 17th. The lore reason for this is because he started life 9 months prior to this date. In this series, he's 6 years old.

Both him and Rika don't play chess, so they don't have a favorite piece. Though if they did, it would likely be the knight.

シリル・ミルヴァートン (Cyril Milverton) is how Cyril's name is spelled in katakana. His name is inspired by both Cyril's from Fire Emblem Three Houses and Charles Augustus Milverton's from Sherlock Holmes.

His birthday is October 30th. The reason I chose this is because it is a day that World lemur day could be celebrated on. Since the day is celebrated on the last Friday of October, I decided to choose this date to be his birthday.

As for his favorite piece, it's likely the knight due to it's ability to leap over pieces.

One other fun fact about him is that due to him losing pigmentation in his face, he now looks kind of like a Japanese macaque. Pigmentation loss is actually common for silky sifakas as they age, with some even having their entire faces turn pink. Now onto Ginji.

猪原 銀仁 (Inohara Ginji) is how his name is written in kanji. 銀仁 means "silver" and "compassion", while 猪原 means "boar" and "origin".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His name and character were mainly inspired by Ginji Kiyomizu from Tying the knot with an Amagami sister. However, he is also related to some characters from some of my aforementioned works. For those who want to know, he's Kaori Inohara's father.

His birthday is January 27th. The reason for that is because Ginji Kiyomizu debuted in chapter 127 of the Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister manga.

His favorite piece is the pawn, mainly because of how much it can control the board.

As for the game, the Monkey's bum is a real chess opening. I decided I wanted at least one game to be played using it, and felt now was a good time to showcase it.

The game along with Ginji and Cyril's introductions originally served as the intro for Season 5. Following the revisions, however, I decided to port the game along with their introductions to this Side Story as I felt it made more narrative sense to do so.

And with this chapter, the goal of the Side Story is clear; setting up a new secret puzzle cafe in Tokyo. If you remember correctly, there were actually only 6 physical secret puzzle cafes as Taira stayed with Tenju in Kyushu. However, since Taira's no longer around, Daria's moving forward with her plan to set up a secret puzzle cafe in Tokyo. This was actually the original plan, but as you know, it was changed because of Taira. Though it ended up working out as Ryokoma wasn't around back when the original secret puzzle cafes were first built. Now, it can house perhaps the best secret puzzle cafe of all time.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #173:

Time to talk about Chapter 173: Scharlachrot Karmesinrot.
Considering the chapter is Scharlachrot's name, you can assume it's going to focus heavily on her, which it does. Turns out, she was unattractive and dumb in her youth and in order to improve up both, joined a military boot camp. However, she didn't realize it was a boot camp headed by radicals seeking to overthrow the government, and ended up stuck there for over 5 years. Ironically, she managed to both improve her image and intellect there.

Despite being with the radicals for over 5 years, Scharlachrot did not once kill nor engage in inhumane activities, though that was mainly due to her primarily being kept exclusively in the training regiment. Ironically, she ended up doing more morally questionable things after forming the Fairy league with Heather. She was willing to kill to survive back then as shown in her debut DESPER match, but after failing horribly at chess, her opponent had mercy on her and let her live. This changed her for the better and inspired her to defect from both the Prussian army and the Desperado league. It is worth mentioning that I decided in the revision to have Heather be that opponent rather than a no-name. The reason I did it is because I felt it better connected the two and helped strengthen their bond more.

Speaking of which, a glimpse into Red Reaper's past is also shown. Funnily enough, he looks similar to the Red Baron pizza mascot.
フレデリック・フォン・リヒトホーフェン (Fredrick von Richthofen) is how his old name would be spelled in katakana. シャルロット (Charlotte) is how Scharlachrot's old name would be spelled on katakana. Scharlachrot knowing him is why she felt so uneasy when he first arrived.

One thing worth mentioning is that Scharlachrot does not like using her DESPER. In fact, she's only used it a total of 12 times on her own volition, including the Gothic chess match. She's no moral saint and has committed questionable to downright illegal things in order to get Heather to where she is, but that's mainly due to her love for Heather. The two really pair well for each other and make up for each other's strengths. Heather is charismatic and good at chess, but is an airhead and bad at leadership. Scharlachrot is good at leadership and intelligent, but horrible at chess. The fact that she was the brains behind the Fairy league was why Melania sought to have Red Reaper eliminate her.

Now that Scharlachot is dead, the fairy league is likely to collapse. Not to mention Heather is in complete shambles due to seeing the love of her life brutally killed before her. This event will greatly effect Heather and dictate her role in the story going forward.

And with that, Season 5 is coming to a close with only one chapter left. This season was definitely more battle heavy than the others, but I think that was it's biggest strength. The next chapter will be the finale of the season, meaning Season 5 will be a total of 25 chapters. It's not as long as the other seasons, but still a respectable number at the end of the day.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #167:

Time to talk about Chapter 167: Hidden in plain sight.
This is a short one, but it s technically full of new content as Robuddy wasn't introduced until the final chapter of Season 5 in the original. Speaking of which, let's talk about him along with Ina Kirikawa.

ロバディ (Robuddy) is how Robuddy's name is spelled in katakana.

His birthday is August 27th. I chose this date at random so there's no greater significance behind why this day is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the knight, mainly because his programming uses the Knighthop chess engine. In-universe, the most powerful chess engine is Shockfishy, which is a parody of Stockfish. Knighthop on the other hand is only the 3rd best chess engine in-universe.

切川 衣那 (Kirikawa Ina) is how her name is written in kanji. 衣那 means "to perform" and "contradiction", while 切川 means "to cut" and "river".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

If you've read some of my other novels, notably Escape Witch and Spice of life, you'll know that the Kirikawa clan is pretty important as many key characters hail from it. This means Ina is a distant relative to all those characters.

Her birthday is December 16th. I chose the date at random so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the knight, mainly due to it's ninja-like movement. Speaking of chess, she was actually that grunt Azenira beat this whole time, meaning her rating is actually 1800. She's fairly decent at the game, but still far from being a master at it.

As for her character, she actually came to be after I designed a character and decided it would be her. However, there was also a character I had designed a while back for something different, that fit Ina's character much more than the newly designed character, so I decided to use said design for Ina. Her design is based off of Oboro Kasumi from the manga, Machi and Oboro.

As for the newly designed character, I decided to use that design for a character that was also mentioned in this chapter, Melisha Kamaleon. And I suppose I should also give fair warning that the next chapter will be a Numakawa game, so prepare to cringe.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:167

    Author's Commentary #160:

Time to talk about Chapter 160: 960 sprint.
As promised, the long awaited debut of Chess 960 in the story is here. For those who don't know, Chess 960 or Fischer random chess, is a famous chess variant invented by 11th world chess champion and American grandmaster, Bobby Fischer. In it, the starting position of all the pieces, except for pawns, are randomized. The two opposing armies will always mirror each other though and the two bishops will always be on opposite colors. Each side also has the ability to castle as well. As for why it's called "Chess 960", the reason for that is because there are 960 different possible starting positions. Chess 960 is also one of the few variants to be officially recognized by FIDE and have specific tournaments for it.

Considering how important it is, I naturally had to add it to the story. I actually first began doing 960 games a few months back actually, but I never actually got around to implementing any of those games in the story until now. The funny thing is that Season 5 was easily the season I did the least amount of planning on, yet it's quickly shaping up to be one of my favorite seasons.

I think it's due to the fact that it's focusing on fun chess variants, giving the story a bit more flare. I had planned from the start to feature chess variants, but at the time, bughouse, chess boxing, and 4-player chess were the only ones on my mind, but now that I've learned of just how many chess variants there are, and how many are available to play on Chess.com, I naturally decided to include as many as I could. There will naturally still be traditional chess matches, but now, chess variants will become a bit more prominent in the story.

As for the game itself, it was once again another me vs the Chess.com engine bot with assisted mode on classic. Since 960's starting positions are random, there isn't really much opening theory, nor many opportunities to get away with crazy opening moves. As such, Okisato basically played normally. It's honestly going to be really interesting to see how Mimoko reacts to his feats. Though one thing I will mention is that a real-world issue that all chess players have to deal with, will affect Okisato. And that issue, is fatigue. While he appears to be fine now, who knows how many more matches he'll have to play before he can rest. Though his next match, after a potentially 10 minute stair sprint will easily be difficult as it will be against Maestro Xiao Lin herself.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #159:

Time to talk about Chapter 159: Fog of war and sexy feet.
Yeah, you can blame a Russian girl named Alya for the fanservice featured in this chapter. That aside, this chapter actually was one of the more tense and suspenseful chapters yet. This is entirely due to the fog of war match.

For those who don't know, fog of war chess is a chess variant where the board is shrouded in a thick fog, and you can only expand you field of vision by moving your pieces. Throughout the chapter, the only moves I specifically mentioned Xiu making were the ones Okisato could see. I felt this helped add to the tension of the game, and yes, Xiu was truly moving all the pieces with her feet, and capturing Okisato's pieces with them too.

As for the game, it was a match I played and won online. My opponent ended up resigning, but that was because there was no way for them to win anyway as no matter what move they made, I'd capture their king next turn and win the game. As for why I did a fog of war game, I wanted the game played to be a chess variant, but one that couldn't be blitzed through as quickly. And speaking of chess variants, I've got plans to incorporate some of the chess variants mentioned in this chapter into the story. Notably Chess 960 which I actually have quite a few games for. Considering how big Chess 960 is, I'm happy to announce it will finally be making it's debut next chapter in Okisato's match against Bao.

As for the time it took to win this game, 5 minutes. That combined with the 15 minutes of the chaturaji game, the 3 minutes to beat Tao, the 7 minutes to arrive in China and beat Hui, means it's taken Okisato 30 minutes to reach Bao. How long it takes Okisato to defeat Bao will be crucial to deciding if he gets there in time.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
