Author's Commentary #511:

Time to talk about Chapter 511: Pressing the press.
This one was actually one of the first ones I wrote for Season 8. It was originally slated to be the first game of the season, but I felt it was better to go with the Portals game instead. Let's talk about Saori as well as Izolda, who's bio I still need to do.

イゾルデ・ヤゴダ (Izolda Yagoda) is how Izolda's name would be written in katakana.

Her birthday is July 5th, which she shares with Polish international master, Aleksandra Maltsevskaya.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

彩輝沙織 (Saiki Saori) is how Saori's name would be spelled in kanji. 沙織 means "sand" and "weave", while 彩輝 means "color" and "radiance".

Her birthday is July 27th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece is the queen.

The game might have started out with knight f3, but quickly morphed into a Halloween Gambit, once again exerting said gambit's status as my favorite one. It even had an en passant, adding to the style points. I actually didn't expect this to lead to a Halloween Gambit when I first played against the bot, but when it did, I went for it. There's more than one way to reach a Halloween Gambit.

Author's Commentary #510:

Time to talk about Chapter 510: Corporate catch.
Finally caught up again with these. I do apologize that the chapters are a bit short, but that's mainly because I'm on vacation and don't really have much of a backlog. Heck, I only have a few chapters really and they're not all one after the other. This chapter was one of the ones I had to write on the fly, which explains it's length.

One thing that was planned a while back was Ichiko becoming principal. It was originally going to be a non-event, but since I wanted a Mimoko game to release on the chapter releasing on her birthday, I had Mifsud show up to cause mayhem. Now Ichiko will have a lot more screentime, and more interactions with the main cast and main side cast, notably Maida.

Author's Commentary #509:

Time to talk about Chapter 509: Mimoko's smooth moves.
For a chapter releasing on Mimoko's birthday, I felt that not only did Mimoko need to play a game, but also win it. However, I actually forgot Mimoko was supposed to be the one playing and opened with the Borg Defense. Thus, the introduction of the handicap for the match. The en passant was easily the highlight of the match, and the main reason I decided to use this game in the first place as I wanted Mimoko to perform it.

Mifsud truly is as bad as her rating suggests, though the funny thing is I think the game was played against Chess.com's 850-rated level 2 engine bot. Regardless, there won't be any real surprises from Mifsud at least when it comes to chess itself.

Time to talk about Chapter 508: Morning assembly.
Smoothie Q. is back, and now she's got the pitiful rating of 50. She really is the worst chess player in the series. Now let's talk about the two new characters that were introduced.

スムース・セバスチャン (Smooth Sebastian) is how Sebastian's name would be spelled in katakana. Yes, his name really is "Smooth", I got real lazy with the naming scheme.

His birthday is February 12th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the knight.

妃伽梨 (Ginkawa Shirako) is how Shirako's name would be spelled in kanji. 妃伽梨 means "princess", "companion", and "pear", while 銀川 means "silver river".

Her birthday is March 8th, which is International Women's Day.

Her favorite piece would likely be the queen.

Shirako hails from the Ginkawa family that is prevalent in many of my other novels. For those that are familiar with them, I'll reveal that she is Harumi's niece, making her Madoka's cousin.

As for the chapter, I initially released it only half-done, but went back and edited it to be more complete. It still ended up being under 1000 words though. That's going to be a theme with this season as I'm writing short quick chapters.

Time to talk about Chapter 507: Good company.
After 500 chapters, it's finally time to reveal Mimoko does have a social life, and that of course, one of her gal pals has a crush on her. Speaking of which, let's talk more about them.

芳田忠依 (Yoshida Tadae) is how Tadae's name would be spelled in kanji. 忠依 means "loyalty" and "dependent", while 芳田 means "aromatic" and "rice paddy".

Her birthday is November 18th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite piece would likely be the pawn.

岳田葵美子 (Okada Kimiko) is how Kimiko's name would be spelled in kanji. 葵美子 means "hollyhock", "beauty", and "child", while 岳田 means "mountain peak" and "rice paddy".

Her birthday is November 16th. I chose this date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Believe it or not, all these characters came about thanks to me fiddling around in paint. None of these characters were actually planned for the story, but since I liked their designs so much, I slotted them in.

The final thing I'll touch on is Mimoko's love life. Like Okisato, romance isn't really a priority for her. In reality, I just haven't really thought much about who she'd fall for. That being said, it could either be a boy or a girl. Maybe she even has a rush on one of her gal pals.

Author's Commentary #506:

Time to talk about Chapter 506: A portal to International Chess Day.
For now, I'm considering this chapter the start of Season 8, but I'm still unsure if I'll make this a full season. I am on vacation and my motivation for writing is low, but more so because I want to enjoy my vacation. That being said, I have some backlog chapters, but also some chapters I still need to write out. That aside, onto the chapter.

This came about thanks to Chess.com's collaboration with Portals sculptures. Portals are sculptures with 24-hour livestreams set up across various cities that all broadcast to each other. They originated in Lithuania, which is why Žygimantas came to be as the other Lithuanians already had preestablished personalities and I didn't want to mess with them.

The Lithuanian variation played in the game is also a nod to Portal's Lithuanian roots. It is short, but that was because I needed to get something out before I left on my vacation. Short will be the theme for a majority of the planned games for this season, just to let you know.

Author's Commentary #505:

Time to talk about Chapter 505: A tease from the author.
All this chapter contains is pretty much just fluff, hyping up future plans. There is some legitimate reasoning for it, mainly because as mentioned previously, I am currently on vacation, so I may not be able to upload daily. I also felt it was better to have there be a one-off chapter between Season 7's final chapter and the International Chess Day one, which will likely be the intro chapter for Season 8.

Season 8 looks to be more casual and slice of life esque compared to the others. One factor for this is my vacation, but also so I don't need to do too much thinking story-wise following Season 7. Season 7 really did take a lot out of me, which is why you can expect some more chill slice of life and less lore bits in Season 8. But of course, there will be chess.

Author's Commentary #504:

Time to talk about the Season 7 finale, Chapter 504: Back home in Japan.
It really has been months since I last had a finale chapter to a season or Side Story, but after nearly 8 months and 260 chapters, Season 7 is officially over. What a ride it's been. There were burnouts, motivation spurts, lots of stuff. The only thing I can say with certainty is that I'll never do an arc in this series or any series this long ever again.

As for the chapter, I felt I needed to showcase a bit more of the daily life of the main cast now that they're back in Japan. It also gave me the chance to have Utami show up again, who like Yuusuke, was sidelined for Season 7. I also wanted to end things off with Mimoko exchanging her points on-screen and of course Himitsudono's epic one-liner. And that's it for the chapter, now for my thoughts on the season as a whole.

I'd say this was both the best and worst season for me, which makes sense if you've read all my author commentaries. I actually suffered burnout in the very early stages of the season, but after writing the Jern-Okisato game, I was reinvigorated with motivation which carried me well into the Bermuda Party and the first rest day. Then came round 7 and the start of the burnout, motivated, burnout, motivated pattern up until I finished the final chapter.

Needless to say, writing this season exhausted me. However, I do plan to try and get some more backlog chapters written as my motivation has returned. That being said, I really do need a vacation, which ironically enough, I am about to go on. That's also one of the main reasons I decided to trim down Pre 6B so that I could finish Season 7 before my vacation. Now I feel much less stressed and satisfied that this 260-chapter season is finally done.

Now despite me going on vacation, I do have some chapters written that I will be uploading, notably one for International Chess Day, because as a chess writer, I'm contractually obligated to do so regardless of how I feel. It was originally going to be a single chapter special, but it's being expanded into something bigger, so look forward to that. I do plan to try and upload chapters while on vacation, but there might be some times I can't upload daily, so keep that in mind.

And to finish, I'd like to thank everyone that's supported this series thus far, especially those that read every chapter of Season 7 through thick and thin. There really were a lot of moments that were dragged out too long, or parts where my burnout was blatantly apparent, but you stuck through and read it all. I thank you for that. I hope you're all looking forward to the next arc of the story.
