I think in Watakoi there's one of the characters who sneaks off and tries to sneakily buy shoujo manga to read....oddly reminiscent of that.

I think the cute bits are still entertaining but I think the way you're weaving the drama could probably use some work, the contrast is a bit too stark and not in a way that really strikes me as much as it takes me out of the narrative.
