    Author's Commentary #348:

Time to talk about Chapter 348: Jittery nerves.
Without Mimoko nearby, Noa's once again getting nervous, but just like before, she manages to get the win. Jolán put up a good fight, but Noa managed to get the win. Though Hungary ultimately gets the last laugh as they win the match despite Noa winning her game.

Compared to Zsa Zsa's game, the game featured in this chapter was nowhere near as exciting, though that doesn't mean it didn't have it's moments. The opening played was a Slav Defense: Modern, Quiet, Schallopp Defense, making it kind of funny that the game was on the tamer side with the opening having "quiet" in it's name. The thrilling bits definitely came towards the end, and while it was nowhere near as flashy as Zsa Zsa's game, nor did I have as much fun writing this game compared to that one, but I feel it's a solid game that fits Noa's character. She's more of a serious player so it makes sense she won't always go for the more flashy openings like some of the others will. But that will make her clashes with those characters all the more exciting.

Now that the Hungary vs Israeli Kingdom of Simien match is done, it's on to single match games before the round officially concludes. There are only about 3 of these to go, so the round is almost over. But of these 3 games, one is a top 30 favorite games in the series contender, so don't think the remaining games won't be exciting. And once they're done, the Bermuda party mini-arc is next. And that arc already as quite a few amazing games present, including one that will end up being posted on the series' one year anniversary.

Speaking of which, said date is only a week away as if the uploading of this chapter. It's truly surreal to think this series has been going on for almost a year, but it's true. Thanks to everyone that's supported the series thus far. But before we get to the amazing game I have planned for the one year anniversary, there's some amazing games and plenty of new characters that will be showing up first in these upcoming chapters.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #343:

Time to talk about Chapter 343: Mimoko vs Xiu.
What a game that was. Mimoko had to work for this one, but she got it done in the end, and Xiu couldn't be angrier. But her little temper tantrum will cost her team, as now she'll be suspended for the 7th round. This also marks the start of Xiu's fierce and contentious rivalry with Mimoko.

And to begin such an occasion, I naturally had to make sure the inaugural match between the two didn't disappoint. Of all the round 6 games, this was the one I probably had to work on the most, as getting the game just right was essential. A key part of that was the game staying relatively even up to the 26th move, but the real meat of it was the 28th move when Mimoko found d5. That was the only winning move as knight f6 would have brought things back to even. And after that, Xiu was completely dumbfounded and easy pickings for Mimoko.

For the Chess Olympics, there are some match-ups I had planned before writing the arc, and some I decided on shortly before writing them into the story. Japan vs France, Japan vs Iceland, Japan vs Italy, Japan vs Israeli Kingdom of Simien, Japan vs New Empire of Mongolia, and Japan vs Bosnia and Herzegovina were all unplanned before the arc began, while Japan vs Denmark, Japan vs Poland, Japan vs German Empire of Prussia, both Japan vs India matches, and Japan vs China were all planned. In the original plans, Xiu was originally going to hold Mimoko to a draw, while Bao beat Tenju, leaving it to Daria and Iori to win their matches and get Japan the win. Obviously, I reversed that decision, for a few reasons.

First off, I want Japan to dominate, which will make their eventual clash with some of the other nations also with perfect victories all the more tense. And second, Xiu losing was better for the overall story. Now her ego has been shattered along with her mask, revealing her true face to the world. And to pour more salt in the wound, Mimoko does get a badge and rematch rights since Xiu is an SPCM. I also enjoyed writing Xiu's shift in attitude, especially after Mimoko found d5. Daria may not have gotten to humiliate Xiao Lin as much as she wanted to, but beating her and her team 4-0 is most certainly satisfactory for her.

Now both Japanese teams have won their matches, meaning Ginji's scheme has been completely foiled. Of course, this means he'll likely get bolder with future schemes going forward. And while team Japan has finished all their games, round 6 is far from over. Thus begins the theory-crafting as to who the teams could end up facing in round 7, and what teams and characters will be showcased in these upcoming chapters.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's commentary #334:

Time to talk about Chapter 334: When you least expect it.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! Unless of course you know I love referencing Monty Python, in which case, you should have seen it coming. But I don't think anyone expected or saw it coming that Ginji would outright chloro Azenira in order to screw over the women's team. And I'll confirm he got Ryonosuke too, meaning he'll be playing in the round after all. Now, let's do the bios for all the new characters.

フランコ・デフランコ (Franko DeFranko) is how Franko's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is November 22nd, which he shares with American-British actor and comedian, Terry Gilliam.

His favorite piece is the bishop, because he himself is a cardinal.

フランシス・ヒメネス・デ・シスネロス (Francis Jiménez de Cisneros) is how Francis' name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is February 1st, which he shares with Welsh actor and comedian, Terry Jones.

His favorite piece is the bishop, because he himself is a cardinal.

フランクリン・フランツ (Franklin Franz) is how Franklin's name would be spelled in katakana.

His birthday is May 5th, which he shares with English actor and comedian, Sir Michael Palin.

His favorite piece is the bishop, because he himself is a cardinal.

Given authority by Queen Sophia, these three bumbling buffoons now how full authority to go full Spanish Inquisition, so long as they adhere to complete and unwavering loyalty and obedience to Sophia herself. And in case you're wondering, they're more in-line with Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition than the historical one.

エゼキエル・ゴルドシミット (Ezekiel Goldschmidt) is how Ezekiel's name would be spelled in katakana. יחזקאל גולדשמידט (Ezekiel Goldschmidt) is how it would be spelled in Hebrew.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His birthday is March 29th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater meaning behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite piece is the bishop, because he himself is a rabbi.

Ezekiel is Golda's father and a grandmaster himself. He is generally regarded as a wise and instructive man. Before the Israeli Kingdom of Simien came to be, he was frequently at odds with Israel's egotistical prime minister. Said character has yet to be revealed in the story, but even though he's no longer in power, he's still got enough sway in Simien's new government to weasel his way onto the men's team. If you've seen the team artworks, you probably have an idea who this character is, but if you haven't I won't spoil things here.

Getting back to Ezekiel, I meant to introduce him earlier, but never found the time until now. He's not going to have a role, say the size of Alya and Anastasia, but I at least wanted to introduce him before the round began. In fact, my goal is to introduce all the characters in the artworks, whether it be giving them just a few seconds of screentime, or a more outside role. But that's easier said than done as I keep making new teams each day. I'm finally capping out the women's teams, but the men's teams still have a ways to go as of the upload date of this chapter.

Getting back to the story, with Azenira out, it means either Iori has to get to the venue in time and even if she does, she'd have to play sick, which would give China a significant edge. But if the latter does come to pass, it means that all 4 of the games on the women's side will be shown. Get hyped because round 6 will be one of the most intense rounds thus far in the tournament.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
