    Author's Commentary #63:

Time to talk about Chapter 63: The mad queen.
Originally, I was going to end the previous chapter with Iori killing Niles as that would truly signify the turning point of the overall bout. However, I felt it was better to end the previous chapter with Mimoko falling unconscious for better suspense, even though it was obvious she was going to lose. Though now it's a race against time since Mimoko's now fighting for her life. However, Iori ended up coming out of nowhere to deliver a deadly KO to Niles Thorndyke, giving the chess club their first win, as well as time.

In the original version, the piece of shit ended up throwing the game, but in the revised version, I decided to reuse the original Utami vs the piece of shit game from the original Chapter 57. In fact, I even renamed this chapter from "For Mimoko-sama" to "The mad queen", as the latter was the title of the original Chapter 57.

Speaking of which, the chapter title is actually a clever play on words. The "mad" in the title is actually the "angry" definition of the word, rather than the "crazy" definition of it. Fitting since Utami was pissed off throughout this whole chapter.

One notable thing about the game is that Utami is playing as white, while the piece of shit and his proxy are playing as black. I decided to justify this as the DESPER deciding to let the piece of shit play as white ultimately due to Niles' death.

As for Utami's new persona, it's a Jojo reference... No really. Diavolo/Doppio from Jojo's bizarre adventures was what I based Utami's new persona off of. However, it's merely the Doppio turning into Diavolo part. Utami does not have King Crimson or any stand for that matter.

Now before I end things off talking out the two proxies, Niles and Alejandro, it's time to reveal the answer as to which one of the piece of shit's proxies was a reference to one of my other works and that reference is... Niles Thorndyke, the actor who played Drop bear Dumbee in The Yowie Hunt. I decided it would be fun to have Niles be in the mix and to be killed by Iori of all people. This also confirms that En Passant Grandmaster takes place in the same universe as not only Yowie Hunt, but Mystery ghost foresight, Spice of life, Escape Witch, and naturally all the Shiruka sensei short stories.

ナイルズ・ソーンダイク (Niles Thorndyke) is how Niles' name would be written in katakana.
As a bonus, ドロップベアダンビー (Drop bear Dumbee) is how Drop bear Dumbee would be written in katakana.

His birthday is September 13th which is the day the first chapter of The Yowie Hunt was released.

アレハンドロ・ゴメス (Alejandro Gómez) is how Alejandro's name would be spelled in katakana. As mentioned in the chapter, he once ran a street gang, but got arrested and given the death penalty for his crimes. However, thanks to fellow Desperado member, Manny, the piece of shit was able to get an audience with Alejandro and have him become his proxy after beating him in a DESPER match.

His birthday is February 13th. Since I chose the date at random, there isn't any significance behind it.

As for both Niles and Alejandro's favorite chess pieces, it is the king, since that's the piece of shit's favorite piece and the piece of shit is in full control of all his proxies. However, the piece of shit would claim that the favorite piece of all his proxies is the pawn, since that's all they are to him.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #58:

Time to discuss Chapter 58: Triple cedar's Himitsuchan.
And here is the major event change I mentioned. While most of the content from the original Chapter 58 still remains, I now decided to add on the match between Michiko and Mimoko, which originally occurred at the start of season 3. Now let's discuss the chapter properly.

The first thing I want to touch on is that Michiko is truly one of the best when it comes to chess terminology. She knows all the openings and gambits including their variations. She also appears to be stronger than her rating suggests, however, due to being an SPCM, she is required to play at her rating's level.

Speaking of which, all SPCMs and Maestros have permanent ratings. This means that they'll always remain the same regardless of wins or losses. It also means they are forbidden from regular tournament play. They're also technically considered WWCF employees since the maestro project was crafted by the WWCF.

As for the game, it was fun to write, much like the game between Mimoko and Himitsudono. Speaking of games, there was also a tease for 4-player chess, and don't worry, there will be 4-player chess matches in the series.

As for the beef between Rodeo and Okisato. Rodeo learned after the Vice-president vote that the man who put his family's farm in debt was a subordinate of Okisato's father. Thus, he became ten times wearier of Okisato as a result.

Before I end this commentary, I'll mention that the chapter was originally titled, "The stubborn rook and the shining knight." This title actually has a clever meaning behind it and is a reference to the favorite chess pieces of Rodeo and... Iori. Yes, Yuzuha's favorite piece is also the knight, however, Iori was the one who ended up being the one to save the day. Not to mention she's wearing a bald cap, hence her being referred to as a "shining" knight".

Unfortunately, this is the last calm chapter before the piece of shit unleashes his plan. And fair warning, his plan is very messed up and if you didn't hate him enough already, the next chapter will make you want to see him die an agonizing death. I will also give warning that the revised version of the next chapter will be much darker than it's original counterpart.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #57:

Time to talk about Chapter 57: The beauty of Mizuse Niimi.
In an earlier commentary, I mentioned that events in this season from Chapter 49 would largely remain unchanged with one notable exception. Well here it is, or rather the start of it.

Originally, Utami was set to face off against Haruki in the final round of the tournament where he'd taunt both her and officials with his DESPER. Utami would have won, but it then would have been revealed that Haruki never activated his DESPER, meaning he wouldn't be bound to the losing conditions.

As for the new chapter, Mizuse goes bald. Funnily enough before Ai herself. Originally, Ai was meant to go bald to showcase just how massive her bald fetish was, but after the revisions, I decided she'd keep her hair longer than in the original version. However, I decided that someone did need to go bald in Season 2, and thus it was Mizuse.

Mizuse's reason for going bald couldn't be more different than Ai's reason for wanting to be bald. Mizuse frequently tries out new hairstyles in order to prove that she'll look beautiful no matter the look. Bald was on the docket this time, though since she had Ai shave her, she ended up getting the most extreme bald makeover conceivable. She doesn't mind, as with every new style she dawns, she always does her upmost to rock the look with pride.

That said, there are some looks she'll shy away from, notably ones that invole getting piercings as she does not like getting her ears, or any part of her body pierced for that matter. Though she does respect those that do though. Overall, Mizuse is generally a kindhearted woman, seeking to prove that women can be beautiful no matter what.

One final thing I'll mention is that the bald caps are primarily used for Ai, but Michiko decided to offer the service to other customers as well. The gagballs and leashes though were present long before Ai came though.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #45:

Time to discuss Chapter 45: The Inoue household.
This originally served as the introduction chapter for Mimoko's family, but I felt it was better to introduce them in Chapter 1 since their presence there helped the chapter, and by extension the story, flow better.

This chapter however does finally reveal the names of Mimoko's parents so I'll give some brief bios on them after I do Kotora's.

Kotora is 12 years old and was born on February 29th. On non leap years, his birthday is celebrated on February 28th. Believe it or not, his mother Daria's birthday is actually February 27th. She even thought they'd be sharing a a birthday, but Kotora ended up being born 2 days later.

井之上 小虎 (Inoue Kotora) is his full name in kanji. His first name, 小虎, ends up translating to "little tiger".

Since Mimoko's the only member of her family that plays chess, none of her family members have a favorite piece. Kotora has played chess though, and developed a distaste for it thanks in no small part to Mimoko always destroying him in it. Now onto Daria and Ichimitsu.

Daria's full name in kanji is 井之上 堕美闇 (Inoue Daria). Her first name,
堕美闇, can translate to "lazy", "beautiful", and "ignorant".

Now on to Ichimitsu. 井之上 一光 (Inoue Ichimitsu) is how his full name is spelled in kanji.
His first name, 一光, can translate to "one" and "radiance".

Ichimitsu's birthday falls on November 30th and he's 45 years old. He tends to stay at home and makes a living trading stocks. He also enjoys reading the paper, or rather holding the paper like he's reading it.

This chapter was originally Chapter 43, but got pushed back a bit due to the revisions. However, Okisato's family still appears at the end of it, so I'll give their bios too. First up is his sister, Otona.

Her full name in kanji is 田辺 乙那 (Tanabe Otona). Her first name, 乙那, means "second" and "beautiful".

Her birthday is November 23rd, which is Labor Thanksgiving Day in Japan.

Thanks to Okisato, she's actually a 600 rated chess player, and as such has a favorite piece; the queen.

Now onto Okisato and Otona's father, Yojiro. At first, he was adamant about Okisato learning shogi as a pastime, but once Okisato became good at chess and showed him the financial benefits of the chess world, he allowed Okisato to pursue chess and even teach all his men to play the game. He himself ended up becoming second only to Okisato in terms of skill and has a rating of 1868. There actually is significance behind his rating since 1868 is actually the first year of the Meiji era.

田辺 与次郎 (Tanabe Yojiro) is how his name is written in kanji.
His first name, 与次郎, means "to give", "next", and "man".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Intriguingly enough, Yojiro's birthday is October 23rd which was the first day of the Meiji era back in 1868.

Like his son, he believes the pawn is the most useful piece on and off the board.

Okisato's family won't play as large a role in the greater story as compared to Mimoko's family, but they will become relevant when the history of Okisato's mother is discussed in a future arc.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #44:

Time to talk about Chapter 44: The ostracized grandmaster.
First, let's talk about the aftermath of Kazuya's failed scheme. Kazuya truly was willing to martyr himself. As for the main reason why, he felt that doing so would truly impress Shion. Shion was also on board with the plan and agreed to help frame the chess club.

However, Kazuya surviving and almost getting arrested ruined the entire plan. After giving their testimonies to the teachers, the chess club was absolved of any involvement in the principal's death. Shion, however, is now in the hot seat for threatening some teachers and students as well as slandering the chess club. And that's all in addition to her now being considered an accomplice in Utami's kidnapping.

All this is largely thanks to Otona, or rather Okisato telling Otona what to do beforehand. As stated previously in the series, killing someone in a DESPER match won't get you charged for murder. However, since Kazuya kidnapped Utami, he would have been booked on kidnapping charges if Tsar Grigori didn't intervene. Despite this, Shion is now under investigation, nor is Kazuya exactly safe as Tsar Grigori intends to punish him for his failure.

As for Okisato, he ended up losing the vice-president election in a landslide to Yuusuke. This was largely due to Mimoko turning against him because of him not telling her about the match with Kazuya. Originally, Okisato was going to be the vice president of the chess club, but after I ended up writing this mini-arc, I felt it would be better to have him become ostracized due to the Kazuya incident and lose to Yuusuke.

However, Okisato doesn't take the loss well and in the revision of this chapter, I decided to showcase one of the games he played against Yuusuke. The game is actually the infamous 9-move mate game that was played between Fabiano Caruana and Alireza Firouzja in the Crunchlabs Masters 2024. In the game, Firouzja ended up falling for what some dub, "the 100 year old trick" which allowed Caruana to achieve a winning position as white. Firouzja resigned after realizing this. Funnily enough, Firouzja ended up bouncing back from the loss and made it to the grand finals of the event. As for why the game is called "the 100 year old trick", that's due to the same rook sacrifice plan being used, albeit in a slightly different way, in a game between Carl Schlechter and Julius Perlis in 1911. I decided to extend the game and show one of the possible ways to mate.

This game was not present in the original version of the chapter though and is thus the 1st new game to be added in the revisions. Though it will only be one of 2 brand new games added in the revisions. And with this game, the [Game log]'s numbering is now back on track.

One final thing I'll mention is the the title. If my original pre-revision comment is still up, you'll notice the chapter was actually titled, "Striving for improvement". "The ostracized grandmaster" was actually the title for the original Chapter 46, now chapter 47 post revision, however, I decided to flip the titles around in order to better reflect the themes of their respective chapters.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Author's Commentary #43:

Time to discuss Chapter 43: Caïssa's blessing
Caïssa is known as the goddess of chess. As such, I felt I needed to make reference to her in the story, and what better way than via the Caïssa's blessing function of the WWCF card.

As explained in the chapter, this feature prevents holders of it from dying due to unnatural causes. For example, Svetlana has it which allows her to function as an invincible one-woman army. As such, she's often tasked by her father to eliminate his foes as Caïssa's blessing prevents weapons from harming her. The blessing is even capable of allowing it's holder to survive a direct hit from a nuke, with no side-effects whatsoever. However, it cannot prevent holders from dying of old age, natural causes, or from the losing conditions of a DESPER battle.

Now is also a good time to confirm everyone that has appeared thus far in the story that has Caïssa's blessing. Okisato, Mimoko, Peter, Tsar Grigori, Svetlana, Hagemi, Raymond Redfield, Kuon, all have it. All the maestros and SPCMs have it too even though some SPCMs are rated under 2000. Gyro also had the blessing when he was alive.

Reaching a rating of 2000 alone though doesn't actually grant users the blessing. Talent and potential tend to be the biggest factors though achieving a rating of over 2500 guarantees someone will get the blessing. I actually have plans to further explore Caïssa's blessing and the DESPERs in future seasons of the story so look forward to that.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.

    Chapter:43

    Author's Commentary #42:

Time to talk about Chapter 42: The mad tsar.
And what better topic to discuss than the mad tsar himself, Grigori Ivan Vasilyevich I. He's one of the higher-ups in the Desperado league and is Svetlana's father as well as the leader of Russia. He came to power by winning a DESPER match and as such, decided that upon becoming the new leader of Russia, he would bring back the monarchy. Thus, his official royal title is Grigori Ivan Vasilyevich the 1st of Russia. He is actually descended from one of Ivan the terrible's illegitimate children though, and as such, bears royal blood.

Speaking of which, Tsar Grigori draws heavy inspiration from Ivan the terrible.
Григо́рий Иван Васильевич I (Grigori Ivan Vasilyevich I) is how his name is written in Russian, with his middle and last name being spelled the same as Ivan the terrible's.
    グリゴリー・イヴァン・ヴァシレヴィッチ1世
(Grigori Ivan Vasilyevich I) is how his name would be written in Japanese.
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

His rating of 2818 is actually a neat reference to the day Ivan died. The day was March 28th 1584, but O.S. (old style) March 18th 1584. And of course, Ivan infamously died during a chess game. Perhaps that might hold clues to Tsar Grigori's fate in the story.

His birthday is August 25th which is shared with Ivan the terrible. Fun fact: The birthday was O.S. August 15th.

As for his favorite piece, it is the king since he himself is tsar of Russia.

Grigori's introduction originally occurred in Chapter 47, but as part of the revisions, I decided to move his introduction up as I felt the story flowed better. I feel his introduction here also showcases his cruelty better and why he's going to be such a major villain in future arcs.

That's all for this commentary. I hope you enjoyed it.
