To celebrate the Chess Olympics arc, I've decided to create full artwork of all the major teams that will appear in the story. Each work of art contains not just full art of the team's members, but also their board number and rating along with the team's average rating. Here's links to all the team art currently up for teams that have been revealed thus far. More will be posted as the arc progresses.

The women's side is complete at 69 teams. Even though there are over 100 teams competing, I'm only choosing to spotlight 69 of the women's teams. I was originally going to cap things off at 64 teams, but ended up doing 5 more. This really is it though.

As for the men's side, I plan to have about 34 to 40 teams total.

Note that not all the countries that get a main focus will each have artwork of both their men's and women's teams.

Exactly. It's one thing if the world was ending the next day, but there's still 10 months left. Luckily, it seems Momo avoided wasting all her money as not only did she and Briana win every crane game 1st try, but she even still had credits left over, and this was after making just one payment on the card. Though sadly, with Silas here, it doesn't matter if they have money or not. He's the kind of man that thrives on taking everything from others and maximizing their suffering. That's the kind of man Silas DeSade is.

I feel this ended up being the case for a few reasons. First off, it really felt more like Kataomori was consumed with horror movie idiot syndrome rather than making a noble sacrifice. Second, now that I've reached Chapter 29, I think that maybe if you wanted to make his death more impactful, it should have happened later on at Helios 9. Kataomori's screen-time is what ultimately dooms the impact of his death for me, as not only was I not the biggest fan of his character, but he had lots of screen-time and at a point where I as a reader was eager to get back to the action. Binging the chapters helped, but if I had read each chapter as it came out, I feel my dislike of his character would only be higher. Now if you want a recommendation on how to fix this, I'd recommend cutting down Kataomori's screen-time. If he had the screen-time length typically given to the typical gate guard character, I feel things would be better. With him being a Ken Nakajima archetype, I really didn't enjoy reading all the chapters focused on his inner romantic turmoils as it invoked memories of the aforementioned Ken Nakajima, who while he does have some legitimate cool moments in his series, ultimately becomes unlikable due to how pathetic he is with romance. My apologies if you had high hopes for his character, but sadly I feel you ended up creating a similar scenario with Kataomori to what happened with Liliana Masquerade in Re:Zero's webnovel.

Yeah, something's not right with Ichiban. It may have been a rough journey to get from Kaiju fleeing with the mercs to this point, but I'll give praise where it is due. This is an amazing chapter. However, I do wish we could have gotten to this point in a better paced way. I really think you need to introduce most of these key characters earlier and all at once before showcasing the action at Helios 9. Showcasing Ichiban's interactions with these characters early on as well could also better enhance the story, specifically the buildup to this moment where everyone reunites with her. I think you have some really good ideas and the recipe for a great mystery/thriller, the only problem is the flashback segments, which could easily be fixed. Regardless, I'm now happy to say that my levels of intrigue with the story are back up to where they were after the Helios 9 arc ended.

But the fact that the military is now at Helios 9 when it's supposed to be completely sealed off, does raise the mystery elements, and hearken back to my point that maybe it would have been better to frame this story as more of a mystery rather than starting off with the action.

I did not expect Kataomori to die so quickly. On one hand, I'm glad you're willing to raise the stakes, but on the other, why was there an entire arc devoted to Kataomori if all his character would amount to would be dying like a fool? I can get the angle of trying to be symbolic and show that Kataomori died as he lived, pathetically, but were all those chapters focused on him really needed to illustrate that point? The other reason I could understand for why you did what you did, was to build up Kataomori to the point where his death would be more impactful to us, the readers. If that was the case, then I'm sorry to say, but it didn't have that effect on me as I found Kataomori's arc to be my least favorite in the story thus far. I'll still praise you for being willing to kill him off, but I think you could have done so in an impactful way that also didn't see him having so much screen-time in the overall novel.

Well, at least the tension and suspense are back. Though this does lead me to formulate a question; would it not have been better NOT to show the initial events at Helios 9 first? Don't get me wrong, that portion of the story is amazing and has a great hook. But it's greatest strength quickly becomes it's greatest flaw thanks to how the rest of the story is structured. But a thought occurred to me that if you instead didn't show the events of Helios 9 at all, but instead made the theme of the story more about the mystery of what happened at Helios 9, that angle would mesh better with all the other characters. That being said, I feel the Shujinko and especially the Kataomori arc have way too much padding and would be best trimmed down to get to the action more quickly much like how Shachiku's arc went. But at the end of the day, this is imply my opinion, so feel free to disregard it if you so choose to.

A time skip? ...This is a very risky move. Assuming the end goal is for everyone to rescue Ichiban, there's just no way I can believe that not only will they be able to breach a facility that's been sealed for two weeks, but that Ichiban is also still alive after all that time. At least the Kataomori arc is over, so that's a plus.

I honestly feel these romantic bits with Kataomori and Shujinko are some of the weaker parts of the overall story. Maybe if you started out with more slice-of-life stuff instead, it would have flowed better, but as I said before, suddenly jumping from the action to the flashback of a new character we've never met before is not something I'm particularly fond of.

Author's Commentary #387:

Time to talk about Chapter 387: As far South as you can go.
Oh boy, this one deals with a really touchy matter, that being Serbia and Kosovo. There's a lot of behind the scenes stuff to talk about on this one. First up, Nikolina.

As soon as I finalized her character, I knew she was going to be controversial. This lies in the fact that she refuses to recognize Kosovo's independence, and can get very violent and angry if the notion that Kosovo isn't part of Serbia is so much as hinted at. This all stems from how she was nearly killed as an infant during the Kosovo war. Originally, I was actually going to have Ratimir be the one to not only save Nikolina, but raise her as well. However, I felt that would only make Nikolina's character irredeemable in the eye of the fans, as even if Ratimir genuinely raised Nikolina like a daughter and truly cared for her growth, he's an irredeemable war criminal who has murdered millions. Thus, I scrapped that concept and just toned Nikolina down to the point where she simply thought of Ratimir as a hero because he fought for Serbia in the Yugoslav wars.

Then there's factor number 2, the Kosovars. I originally had no intent on making a Kosovan team, or even showcasing Kosovo's leader onscreen. Kosovo still would have existed, but rather the central conflict of this plotline would be between Nikolina and Blerta, both of whom being Kosovo natives, albeit from different ethnicities. While Nikolina's backstory is horrific, Blerta's is equally as horrific, as she herself was nearly killed in the Kosovo war when Yugoslav forces led by Ratimir killed nearly everyone that lived in her town. It just goes to show that when it comes to war, no side has clean hands.

Getting back to the Kosovars, when I decided to finally go beyond my self-imposed maximum of 64 women's teams, I decided Kosovo would be one of the 5 teams. This stemmed from the fact that when I decided upon featuring miscellaneous characters from countries that didn't have full teams, Kosovo was one of said countries. Thus, I promoted them to full team status, but that now meant I had to revise this chapter to include them.

As for the Kosovars competing, most are sadly more on the nationalistic side, which only worsens tensions. Though there are those on the team that truly want peace, such as Shpresa, Luljeta, and maybe even Violetta, secretly. Since the Kosovan women's team was literally created less than a week before this chapter was uploaded, I don't quite have every character's story pinned down just yet. That being said, I have at least three of the five member's personalities and character arcs planned out.

Though as a consequence of this last minute decision to include the Kosovan team, I don't really have any other planned moments for them to appear in this arc, at least at this current moment. What I'm hinting at is that a Serbia and Kosovo clash in the tournament is unlikely to happen, at least in round 7. That being said, all these characters definitely will reappear in the arc again.

And with that, things will get more lighthearted again when Kisha's show resumes. Of course I say that, with the idea of possibly revising the next chapter to make it more darker than it originally was, but at least compared to this chapter, it will be full of far less strife and turmoil, assuming of course I even go through with the revision idea I have, for if I don't, the chapter most certainly will be a relaxing and stress-free chapter.
