Author's Commentary #2:

Time to talk about Chapter 2: The chess club's members. This chapter actually underwent a notable change after receiving some feedback. That change being that there is now a basic explanation on how chess works. Since I've played chess before, I'm very familiar with how the pieces move and chess notation. However, not everyone knows how chess notation works. After receiving the feedback, I decided that this would be the best place to drop all the information on chess notation both because this is the 2nd chapter and because it introduces a rookie in the form of Utami. It also worked out in that it allowed me to highlight Mimoko's knowledge of the game.

Speaking of which, let's talk about Mimoko Inoue, the main female protagonist. First off her name. In kanji, her name is spelled as followed, 井之上実最子 (Inoue Mimoko). Her first name, 実最子 can mean "sincere", "above all", and "a knowledgeable thinker", which is fitting for her character since she is a prodigy and all-around good person. As for her last name, 井之上, it can translate to "wellhead", "to reach", and "to ascend". Fitting since Mimoko is likely to ascend to the top of the chess world due to her talent.

As for her background in chess, she first played a game of chess when she was 3, and has been playing ever since. While she could have chosen to start her chess career then, she chose not to, mainly because she viewed chess more as a fun hobby than a profession. That, and at the time, she didn't want chess to consume her life. Her parents respected her wishes and didn't pressure her in the slightest. As time went on, Mimoko continued to hone her chess skills through online matches, though always played anonymously as a guest in order to avoid drawing too much attention to herself. She's never played in a tournament, though was taken to one by her mother when she first showed an interest in the game. On her 18th birthday, her parents got her a nice chess set and bag, which Mimoko interpreted as them trying to nudge her to pursue chess. Feeling the time was right, Mimoko decided to finally start her professional chess journey, which led to her seeking to establish a chess club, so others could experience the joys of chess. Above all, she encourages everyone to simply have fun.

She shares her birthday, July 23rd, with Judit Polgár, one of the strongest female chess players of all time. Speaking of which, many characters in this series share their birthdays with famous chess players.

Finally, as stated in her character bio, her favorite piece is the king. The reason for that is because to Mimoko, the king is the most important piece on the board and the core of the game itself.

Guess it really was Ekko. Though I'm more impressed with Bear. He predicted their movements and has just been waiting for them. Unless he plans to let them go, everyone's in for a rough fight.

Author's Commentary #103:

Time to talk about Chapter 103: Rika vs Benihime.
Something that never happened in the original, but was built up to happen, was Benihime learning of Rika's past and not taking it well. Here however, it was time to address that plot-point.

When Benihime learned, she immediately tried to kill Rika, but Rika effortlessly stomped her. Had Rika not been pregnant, she likely would have let Benihime rough her up a bit, but since now she's got a baby growing inside of her, she won't allow any harm to come to them.

Another major difference from the original is the snap election. There was a major election in the original, but it took place in October 2017, which was also when the real-world House of representatives election took place in Japan. I felt that time skipping to that point ended up hurting the story, so for the remake, I decided to move the election date up to April 2017.

This next arc will obviously be the big confrontation with Ookuma, and will naturally be far different from the arc in the original it was modeled after. I hope you're looking forward to it.

Author's Commentary #102:

Time to talk about Chapter 102: The end of the nightmare.
So this past week, I ended up getting sick, but since I had a backlog of this series saved as drafts, I could simply just log in and upload the chapters as normal. This is why many of my author commentaries have been delayed, but now are caught up. Funnily enough, I ended up getting better just as the arc ended. Now let's talk about it.

So a lot went down in this arc. Masaru got messed up, Rika mentally tormented, and Waki killed off. Yes, unlike in the original, Waki dies. Though perhaps as a way to balance out all the bad, Rika is also pregnant. While the Roboborg union arc is over, things sadly won't show signs of improving. Ookuma is still pulling the strings along with the mysterious Averice and Gula.

Speaking of those two, they won't really be appearing in the story again as they're intended to be the main antagonists in a different novel, whenever I get around to writing it that is.

グラ (Gula) and アヴェリス (Averice) are how both their names are spelled in katakana. The two don't really have birthdays, nor does Averice really have have a favorite food. Gula, however likes eating anything except Nero's dark flames of destruction.

One other thing I'll briefly mention is Honoka. Honoka Shibawara actually did appear briefly in the originally, but in the remake, I've revamped her role in the story. She might make a proper appearance before the story ends, but I'll give her bio anyway.

柴原火佳 (Shibawara Honoka) is how her name is spelled in kanji. 火佳 means "fire" and "beauty", while 柴原 means "firewood" and "origin".
(If I made any mistakes with the translations, feel free to correct me).

Her birthday is July 16th. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is her birthday.

Her favorite food is spicy curry.

And with that, the arc I never got to add to the original is finally complete, however, the effects of it will be felt for the rest of the story. Things are also more tense with Benihime than in the original. Perhaps a major confrontation is looming between her and Rika.

Author's Commentary #101:

Time to talk about Chapter 101: Master of gravity.
It's not the final chapter of the arc, but Nero and Ryuujin don't care, Laqutte's going down. And he most certainly did as now he is gone and truly dead. Now let's talk about Ryuujin.

湯間竜人 (Yuma Ryuujin) his how his name is spelled in kanji. 竜人 means "dragon" and "human", while 湯間 means "hot water" and "space".

His birthday is October 1st. I chose the date at random, so there's no greater significance behind why this date is his birthday.

His favorite food is guavas.

Ryuujin was originally a character from a novel that I planned to make my magnum opus. However, I ended up deeming the work not good enough, and decided to toss it to the rewrite pile. Ryuujin is one of Nero's minions who he trained in order to fight. He also received his powers from him as well.

Author's Commentary #100:

Time to talk about Chapter 100: Mimi's rage.
The series has reached it's 100th chapter, and is now just short of surpassing the original by about 23 or so chapters. What better way to celebrate then to have Mimi kick ass.

This chapter was all Mimi. She showcased her growth, and defended the restaurant. Nero only had to ensure the threat was truly eliminated. As for the flask, it contained Ginkawa milk which is why Mimi was able to heal up like crazy. She also carefully calculated the blow in order to minimize it's lethality, thanks to the little Hylda from her imagination. Now, all that's left is to destroy the Roboborg union, which you can bet Nero most certainly will do.

Author's Commentary #99:

Time to talk about Chapter 99: Waki's poison.
This is the moment I've been hinting at for a long time. Remember the traitor plot-line? Well here it's finally brought up again. Turns out Mille was the traitor all along. I had originally planned for her traitor arc to be completely wrapped up withing Mystery ghost foresight, but obviously that never happened. That, and I felt it would be better if she and Mimi faced off.

If it wasn't apparent last chapter, all the key members of the Roboborg union are named after the monsters from Greek mythology that were created by Typhon and Echidna. CH1-M3R4 is obviously Chimera, EC1-DNA is Echidna, and Mille's L3R-N43-4NH is referencing the Lernaean hydra.

Since I felt the series could use some more battles, I decided now was a good time to do so. Though the battle looks to be overwhelmingly in the Roboborg union's favor. Perhaps a strong ally will arrive soon.

[Game log #86]

Here's the game from the International chess day special. The game is actually the infamous 9-move mate game that was played between Fabiano Caruana and Alireza Firouzja in the Crunchlabs Masters 2024. In the game, Firouzja ended up falling for what many dub, "the 100 year old trick" which allowed Caruana to achieve a winning position as white. Firouzja resigned after realizing this.

I decided to extend the game and show one of the possible ways to mate, notably what happens if black takes both rooks. As for why the game is called "the 100 year old trick", that's due to the same rook sacrifice plan being used, albeit in a slightly different way, in a game between Carl Schlechter and Julius Perlis in 1911. Funnily enough, this also invokes some word of advice from the series itself as Mimoko made it a point that sometimes capturing a hanging rook could be bad.

Author's Commentary #148:

Time to talk about Chapter 148: Happy International chess day.
So I recently got sick and as such, I was unable to write or do author commentaries until I get better. Since I'm doing these now, I'm obviously feeling much better. However, when I learned that July 20th was International chess day, I pushed myself to make this chapter even though I was sick.

The game in particular ended up being a lifesaver. For you see, the game is actually the infamous 9-move mate game that was played between Fabiano Caruana and Alireza Firouzja in the Crunchlabs Masters 2024. Funnily enough, this also invokes some word of advice from the series itself as Mimoko made it a point that sometimes capturing a hanging rook could be bad.

If I was feeling better, I probably would have featured a more extravagant game with the main cast, but I think that this was good considering the circumstances. As for the series, It will probably be on break for a bit longer, though I do plan to post something a special chapter on Mimoko's birthday, so look forward to that. Season 4 will likely be one of the shortest seasons, but that's honestly because Season 5 is shaping up to be something big. I thank everyone who's supported this series. There is more good things to come.

Author's Commentary #147:

Time to talk about Chapter 147: Interview the author Part 4: The top 10 most hated characters.
Originally, I didn't plan for this to be the last part of the interview, but I ended up getting sick and decided to change course. Though International chess day was the big thing that made me change up my plans more, as I felt that as a chess writer, I was required to do something for that.

Luckily, an opportunity presented itself, and I got the chapter done. I also hadn't even compiled a list of my top 10 favorite chapters yet, so it made sense not to prioritize that over the International chess day special.

Perhaps it's just because Ko reminds me of Yalda, and it got me thinking that maybe Ko was the precursor to her. That, and I also can't help but think the father is related to Yalda's father. Then again, I'm not caught up on Face of Eternity so I could be completely wrong.😆

Author's Commentary #45:

Time to talk about Chapter 45: Super Jester bros super shitshow.
Hey paisanos! It's the super Jester bros super shitshow!
It's the Jester bros, not the Mario bros. But they ripped em off anyway and stole their intro song. A parody of the Super Mario bros super show, it lacks all the goodwill cuz it's the big bad Jester. Aaaaaassss for Pistachio Ragu, the Italian pizza chef, he's a parody of Pizza Tower's Peppino Spaghetti! He ran out of town on the whims of a lie, but when he sees Jester again he'll suplex him and Vinny! UH!

How'd you like that rap? Anyway, this was a really fun chapter from the original that I naturally had to include it in the remake. There was also a crazy hamburger reference thrown in there as well. Overall, this was a rather fun and lighthearted chapter.

As for the next arc, it's very likely the series will go on break for a few days. The arc is mostly finished, but I need a little more time and the daily updates are getting a bit harder to keep up with. I'll still do my best to ensure the series is high-quality though.
